Aciclovir prophylaxis was previously given to all immunocompromised patients treated by our unit, following contact with varicella zoster. In 2003, we changed practice according to National Guidelines, giving prophylaxis only to patients without serum varicella zoster immunoglobulin G antibody (VZ IgG) at diagnosis of their malignancy. Since then we have seen nine patients with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and VZ IgG positivity at diagnosis of their malignancy develop chickenpox. Our observations question current practice for patients with ALL.

The objective of this study is to define optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies for patients with urachal anomalies in the pediatric age group. The medical records of 21 children who had undergone surgery for urachal anomalies at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine from January 1990 to April 2005 were reviewed. The foot propelled scooter is a popular toy preferred by girls and boys, but at the same time, these put the children at risk of some kind of injury. The literature had reported that the fractures at the upper extremities are the most frequent injury observed related to the use of a scooter. The purpose of our study was to describe the injuries related to the scooters use in a sample of injuries handled at the UPR Hospital at Carolina, Puerto Rico. A total of 62 patients who arrived to the ED and were evaluated for some kind of injury related to the use of scooters were included in our study.

The health profile of two groups of Ethiopian immigrants in Israel was evaluated. Trichophytosis and active trachoma were observed in 5%-8.7% of prepubertal children. Among adults 13% had corneal opacities and 10.4% had cataracts. Goiter, spastic bronchitis, valvular heart disease, leprosy and onchocerciasis were prevalent. A recognized major postoperative complication of hepatic hydatid disease is accumulated hydrops leading to secondary infection in the residual cavity of the excised cyst. This study examined two methods of treating cystic hepatic hydatid disease in 43 children. A group of 22 children were treated by a new method of open drainage, 21 underwent capsulorrhaphy without drainage. There was no mortality or morbidity. The open method was associated with more rapid resolution of hydrops and quicker shrinkage of residual cavities, with efficacy over a median follow-up of 42 months.

The effect of caloreen (glucose polymer) supplementation on indicators of iron status during protein-energy malnutrition was studied. Sixty-four children with moderate protein energy malnutrition (PEM) were fed diets supplemented with caloreen or starch (control) for 14 days, following which iron status as packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin (Hb), serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), serum ferritin, and urinary iron levels were determined. Caloreen supplementation significantly increased (P less than 0.05). PCV, serum iron and serum ferritin and decreased (P less than 0.05) TIBC.

Hypercalciuria (HCU) is frequently found during the evaluation of children with hematuria; the long-term implications of untreated HCU in children are uncertain. Since 1981, we have identified HCU (urinary calcium, greater than 0.1 mmol.kg-1.d-1) in 58 patients (41 male) with hematuria; 64% had gross hematuria and 74% had a relative with urolithiasis. During an outbreak of dysentery in the Northeastern part of Thailand, eight cases of HUS were admitted to Srinagarind Hospital from April to September 1987. Their ages ranged from 6 months to 6 years (mean age = 2.4 years). All patients had prodromal symptoms of mucous bloody diarrhea. Seven hundred and eight-four patients with measles admitted to the Institute of Child Health, Kabul (Afghanistan) between April 1980 and March 1982 were studied. Almost three-quarters (73.6%) of children (4 months to 12 years) with measles were below the age of 3 years. The maximum number of cases occurred in the 1 to 2 years age group (43.1%). In a 750-bed community-teaching hospital with 3,200 employees, throat cultures were routinely done in hospital personnel complaining of a sore throat. During a 3-month period, 323 employees had throat cultures; only 20 (6.2%) of these throat cultures grew group A streptococcus. The prevalence of positive throat cultures was similarly low in employees (6.2%) and adult patients (7.3%). There was no evidence that employees either had higher prevalence of group A streptococcal pharyngitis or that they spread the infection to patients.
