The Mediating Role of Pain Cognitions and Pain Sensitivity in the Treatment Effect of Perioperative Pain Neuroscience Education in People Undergoing Surgery for Lumbar Radiculopathy.

Though perioperative pain neuroscience education (PPNE) positively influences patients' surgical outcomes, little is known about the mechanisms behind this treatment's success. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the potential mediating role of pain cognitions and pain sensitivity in the treatment effect of PPNE on postoperative quality of life in people undergoing surgery for lumbar radiculopathy. This secondary analysis uses data from 120 participants of a randomized controlled trial who were randomized to receive either PPNE or perioperative biomedical education before undergoing surgery

Breakthroughs in Alzheimer's Research: A Path to a More Promising Future?

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a widespread neurodegenerative disorder with a significant global impact, affecting approximately 50 million individuals, and projections estimate that up to 152 million people will be affected by 2050. AD is characterized by beta-amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain, leading to cognitive decline. SUMMARY: Recent research on AD has made significant strides, including the development of an "amyloid clock" biomarker that tracks AD progression through positron emission tomography (PET) scans. Surf4 and other genes have been discovered to play a rol

Modulatory effect of liraglutide on doxorubicin-induced testicular toxicity and behavioral abnormalities in rats: role of testicular-brain axis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Doxorubicin (DOX) is a powerful chemotherapeutic agent used in many types of malignancies. However, its use results in testicular damage. DOX-induced testicular damage results in low level of serum testosterone which may affect cognitive function. The current study investigated the protective effect of liraglutide (50, 100 μg/kg/day) in testicular toxicity and the consequent cognitive impairment induced by DOX. DOX treatment reduced sperm count (62%) and sperm motility (53%) and increased sperm abnormalities (786%), as compared to control group. DOX also reduced serum testosterone level (85%)

Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic evaluation of nasal liposome and nanoparticle based rivastigmine formulations in acute and chronic models of Alzheimer's disease.

With the increasing aging population and progressive nature of the disease, Alzheimer's disease (AD) poses to be an oncoming epidemic with limited therapeutic strategies. It is characterized by memory loss, behavioral instability, impaired cognitive function, predominantly, cognitive inability manifested due to the accumulation of β-amyloid, with malfunctioned cholinergic system. Rivastigmine, a reversible dual cholinesterase inhibitor, is a more tolerable and widely used choice of drug for AD. However, rivastigmine being hydrophilic and undergoing the first-pass metabolism exhibits low CNS bi

A Novel Neuropsychological Tool for Immersive Assessment of Concussion and Correlation with Subclinical Head Impacts.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) remains a diagnostic challenge and therefore strategies for objective assessment of neurological function are key to limiting long-term sequelae. Current assessment methods are not optimal in austere environments such as athletic fields; therefore, we developed an immersive tool, the Display Enhanced Testing for Cognitive Impairment and mTBI (DETECT) platform, for rapid objective neuropsychological (NP) testing. The objectives of this study were to assess the ability of DETECT to accurately identify neurocognitive deficits associated with concussion and evalu

Machine learning and individual variability in electric field characteristics predict tDCS treatment response.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is widely investigated as a therapeutic tool to enhance cognitive function in older adults with and without neurodegenerative disease. Prior research demonstrates that electric current delivery to the brain can vary significantly across individuals. Quantification of this variability could enable person-specific optimization of tDCS outcomes. This pilot study used machine learning and MRI-derived electric field models to predict working memory improvements as a proof of concept for precision cognitive intervention. METHODS: Fourteen h

Prediction of clinical and biomarker conformed Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment from multi-feature brain structural MRI using age-correction from a large independent lifespan sample.

Structural neuroimaging has been applied to the identification of individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, these methods are greatly impacted by age limiting their utility for detection of preclinical pathology. We built linear models for age based on multiple combined structural features using a large independent lifespan sample of 272 healthy adults across a wide age range from the Human Connectome Project Aging study. These models were then used to create a new support vector machine (SVM) training model in 136 AD and 268 control participants b

Tamoxifen promotes white matter recovery and cognitive functions in male mice after chronic hypoperfusion.

Cerebral white matter lesions (WMLs) induced by chronic cerebral hypoperfusion are one of the major components of stroke pathology and closely associated with cognitive impairment. However, the repair and related pathophysiology of white matter after brain injury remains relatively elusive and underexplored. Successful neuroregeneration is a method for the potential treatment of central nervous system (CNS) disorders. A non-steroidal estrogen receptor modulator, Tamoxifen, is an effective inhibitor of cell-swelling-activated anion channels and can mimic neuroprotective effects of estrogen in e

The effects of repeated antibiotic administration to juvenile BALB/c mice on the microbiota status and animal behavior at the adult age.

Recent studies carried on germ -free (GF) animal models suggest that the gut microbiota (GM) may play a role in the regulation of anxiety, mood, and cognitive abilities such as memory and learning processes. Consistently, any treatment disturbing the gut microbiota, including the overuse of antibiotics, may influence the brain functions and impact behavior. In the present study, to address this issue, two wide-spectrum antibiotics (ampicillin and cefoperazone, 1 g/l) were repeatedly applied throughout a 6-week period to initially 21-day-old male BALB/c mice. Antibiotics were administered separ

Diet-induced obesity progressively alters cognition, anxiety-like behavior and lipopolysaccharide-induced depressive-like behavior: focus on brain indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase activation.

Obesity is associated with a high prevalence of mood symptoms and cognitive dysfunctions that emerges as significant risk factors for important health complications such as cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. It is therefore important to identify the dynamic of development and the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these neuropsychiatric symptoms. Obesity is also associated with peripheral low-grade inflammation and increased susceptibility to immune-mediated diseases. Excessive production of proinflammatory cytokines and the resulting activation of the brain tryptophan cataboli

Combining Noninvasive Brain Stimulation and Physiotherapy to Improve the Management of Chronic Low Back Pain in Veterans: Protocol for a Multi-Arm Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is the most common chronic pain condition in veterans, but the effectiveness of standard management approaches is modest. Addressing the psychological risk factors of chronic pain that are often observed in this population (eg, anxiety, depression, stress and mood disorders) may be important to enhance outcomes. Psychologically informed physiotherapy (PiP) identifies and mitigates the negative impacts of emotional and cognitive factors alongside the biomedical aspects of chronic LBP to improve physical functioning and has shown promising results in this populati

LRP1 at the crossroads of Aβ clearance and therapeutic targeting in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), characterized by progressive cognitive decline, memory impairment and behavioral disturbances, is the most common form of dementia, and no disease-modifying treatments are available to halt or slow its progression. Amyloid-beta (Aβ) is suggested to play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of AD, and enhancing the clearance of Aβ from the brain has emerged as a major research direction. As the primary receptor for Aβ clearance at the blood-brain barrier (BBB), low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1) plays a crucial role in regulating Aβ transport and m

Reappraising stress-related arousal enhances prosocial behavior in individuals perceiving the intervention as effective.

BACKGROUND: While psychological stress is increasing globally, the conditions under which stress facilitates or hinders prosocial behavior remain elusive. To resolve heterogeneous findings, it is essential to consider the modulatory effects of individuals' appraisals of stress as challenging versus threatening. Here, we tested the hypothesis that strengthening an individual's challenge appraisal under stress will enhance prosocial behavior. METHODS: 121 individuals (62 women, 59 men) participated in the Trier Social Stress Test for Groups. Participants were instructed to either reappraise the
