Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure in a 13-Year-Old Patient With Wilson's Disease Due to Dengue Virus Infection: A Case Report.

Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is characterized by acute hepatic decompensation in patients with chronic liver disease and is a clinical syndrome associated with high short-term mortality. Most commonly, the underlying cause of chronic liver disease is known prior to the acute decompensation, which is precipitated by another factor. We present the case of a 13-year-old male with previously undiagnosed Wilson's disease (WD) who developed rapidly progressive ACLF precipitated by dengue virus infection, culminating in multiorgan failure and death. This case highlights the diagnostic challe…

Dengue-Associated Encephalopathy With Multiple Cranial Neuropathies and Multisystem Involvement in a Patient With Epilepsy: A Comprehensive Case Report With Longitudinal Multimodality Imaging.

Dengue fever is a common arboviral infection in tropical and subtropical regions. Neurological involvement is uncommon but increasingly recognized, and may mimic stroke, post-ictal deficits, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, or sepsis-associated encephalopathy. We report a 45-year-old Lebanese woman with epilepsy who presented after a short febrile illness with dysuria initially treated as a urinary tract infection. She was later found in a post-ictal state with frothy oral secretions and urinary incontinence, febrile to 40°C and hypotensive to 70/50 mmHg. Neurological examination revealed …

Application of a Temporal Fusion Transformer and Long-Term Climate and Disease Data to Assess the Predictive Power and Understand the Drivers for Malaria and Dengue.

Vector-borne diseases are strongly influenced by climate, yet the magnitude and temporal variability of climate-disease relationships remain poorly quantified. Outbreaks occur abruptly, and responses are typically delayed, underscoring the need for predictive tools that can support proactive interventions. This study applies Temporal Fusion Transformers (TFTs) to long-term, high-resolution climate datasets and to weekly malaria and dengue case records from South Africa and Vietnam to assess predictive performance and identify key environmental drivers. The models incorporated diverse climatic …

Hemophagocytic Lymphohystiocytosis in a Patient With Suspected Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Recent Viral Illness Compatible With Dengue: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, or HLH, is a very rare and aggressive disorder of the immune system, for which the trigger may be an infection, malignancy, or autoimmune disease. It has predominantly been described as triggered by T/NK lymphomas, but acute myeloid leukemia-induced HLH is a very rare occurrence. Viral infections like dengue fever may act as potential triggering factors. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old male developed persistent high fever, weakness, and pancytopenia a few days after recovery following a recent febrile illness clinically compatible with dengue i…

Study of the circulation of dengue, yellow fever, and West Nile viruses in Guinea: implications for achieving the health objectives of the Simandou 2040 program.

BACKGROUND: Diseases such as dengue, yellow fever and West Nile virus, which are transmitted by arthropods, pose public health problems in tropical and subtropical regions. Like many West African countries, Guinea possesses all the conditions conducive to the circulation of these viruses. These include local ecology and climate, as well as the presence of vectors that transmit these viruses. Despite their medical importance, these viruses have received limited study, and up-to-date information on their circulation remains scarce. In this context, the present study examined the prevalence of th…

Identification and computational analysis of conserved YXXΦ motifs in the pan-serotypes of dengue virus NS5 protein and their implications in host-virus interactions.

Dengue is a major global health challenge, caused by the dengue virus (DENV) and transmitted through the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The four DENV serotypes (DENV1-4) infect about 400 million people annually. The non-structural protein 5 (NS5) is the most conserved DENV protein, crucial for viral replication. This study aims to elucidate the replication and pathogenesis mechanisms of DENV by targeting tyrosine-based motifs and YXXΦ-like tetrapeptides in the NS5 protein across all serotypes. We employed computational tools to identify and analyze tyrosine-based motifs (TM) and YXXΦ-like tetrapeptid…

Clinical Picture and Risk Factors for Severity of SARS-CoV-2 and Dengue Coinfection in Children: Experience From a Tertiary Hospital in Vietnam.

Introduction Dengue is an infectious disease that is a burden in Asia-Pacific and Latin America. The COVID-19 pandemic in dengue-endemic areas has caused a "double burden" because of the possibility of coinfection, especially in children who are vulnerable to both COVID-19 and dengue. This study aimed to describe the characteristics and identify risk factors for the severity of the coinfection in Vietnamese children. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study, undertaken at Children's Hospital 1 (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) during the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. All children under …

Enabling countries to manage outbreaks: statistical, operational, and contextual analysis of the early warning and response system (EWARS-csd) for dengue outbreaks.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is currently the fastest-spreading mosquito-borne viral illness in the world, with over half of the world's population living in areas at risk of dengue. As dengue continues to spread and become more of a health burden, it is essential to have tools that can predict when and where outbreaks might occur to better prepare vector control operations and communities' responses. One such predictive tool, the Early Warning and Response System for climate-sensitive diseases (EWARS-csd), primarily uses climatic data to alert health systems of outbreaks weeks before they occur. EWAR…
