Periodontal-systemic disease education in U.S. and Canadian dental schools.

Research has proliferated in recent years regarding the relationship of oral disease to systemic conditions. Specifically, periodontal disease has been studied as a potential risk factor for multiple conditions such as cardiovascular disease (CVD) and adverse pregnancy outcomes, while other research focuses on exposures or behaviors associated with oral disease. However, few articles have been published reporting how this information is integrated into schools of dentistry, both in the classroom and clinical curriculum. For our study, a thirty-three-item survey and cover letter were electronic

Accuracy of diagnoses of HIV-related oral lesions by medical clinicians. Findings from the Women's Interagency HIV Study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if medical clinicians are as accurate as dental clinicians in recognizing diagnostic characteristics of HIV-related oral lesions. METHODS: In 355 HIV-infected participants at five Women's Interagency HIV Study sites, we paired oral examinations conducted within 7 days of each other by dental and medical clinicians. We used the former as a gold standard against which to evaluate the accuracy of the latter. We assessed the accuracy of the medical clinicians' findings based both on their observations of abnormalities and on their descriptions of these abnormalities. RESU

Periodontal therapeutics--a viable option?

Research in recent years in periodontology has seen a shift from surgery towards medicine. While surgery, particularly regenerative, and including implants, continues to form an important element of periodontal treatment, the volume of treatment required and the results of recent and ongoing non-surgical studies clearly show that most future periodontics will be based on a physician-type approach. Improved diagnostics based on more precise periodontal disease classification, simplification of mechanical oral hygiene equipment and procedures, and the development of conventional and non-conventi

Competence in the use of a semi-automated external defibrillator among undergraduate dental students: evaluation and proposal for improvement.

BACKGROUND: The dental clinical setting is inherently stressful and may precipitate medical emergencies, including life-threatening cardiovascular events. Dentists carry both an ethical and legal responsibility to promptly recognize and effectively manage such situations. This responsibility demands not only training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation but also proficiency in the correct use of a semi-automatic external defibrillator. The present study aims to evaluate the competence of final-year dental students in operating a semi-automatic external defibrillator within a simulated scenario, to

Knowledge, attitudes and oral health care practices of children in Tshwane District, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: South Africa, like many Sub-Saharan African (SSA) nations, suffers from a shortage of dental services at the primary healthcare level and a limited number of dentists per capita. This scarcity results in limited access to dental care for children, contributing to the prevalence of oral diseases, especially in underserved communities. This study aimed to assess children’s knowledge, attitudes, and oral hygiene practices, and to further assess the effect of an educational intervention on their oral hygiene practices in selected primary schools in the Tshwane District, South Africa. Assessing the burden of oral health conditions in the German population: a focus on dental caries, periodontitis, and edentulism.

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases are a major public health problem globally. In Germany, there is a high utilization of dental services, and oral health has significantly improved over the past decades. However, a more specific assessment of burden exerted by oral health conditions, namely carious disease, periodontitis and edentulism is required. In contrast to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study which often relies on multiple sources of data to report its estimates, this study uses a nationally representative dataset to provide a focused and detailed assessment of the oral disease burden in Ge

Forecasting regional disparities in cataract surgery demand and ophthalmologist supply in Japan: a prefecture-level forecasting study.

OBJECTIVE: Cataracts are the leading cause of poor vision in Japanese adults. As Japan's population is rapidly ageing, the demand for cataract surgery will continue to increase. Despite this, quantitative research evaluating both supply and demand of cataract surgery is lacking. The objective of this study was to forecast future cataract surgery demand and the supply of ophthalmologists in Japan by region and evaluate the cataract surgery demand-supply balance considering regional differences in demographics and medical resources. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Based on the Ministry of Health, Labour

Tobacco cessation training for undergraduate dental students: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use causes substantial morbidity and mortality, including oral consequences such as periodontitis, impaired healing, and oral cancer. Dentists are well positioned to provide cessation advice, but many students report limited knowledge, confidence, preparedness, and counseling skills. This review assessed students' baseline knowledge, attitudes, confidence, and preparedness and evaluated structured training. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central were searched for studies published between January 2016 and July 2025 enrolling dent

Clinical and genetic findings in 103 individuals in Norway with basal cell naevus syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell naevus syndrome (BCNS) is a rare autosomal dominant condition characterized by early onset and multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), skeletal and ocular abnormalities, and extracutaneous tumours and cysts. In most cases, BCNS is caused by a pathogenic variant in the tumour suppressor gene PTCH1. Pathogenic variants in SUFU account for a minority of cases. No clear genotype-phenotype associations between different PTCH1 variants have been established. OBJECTIVES: To identify all individuals with BCNS in Norway, characterize their clinical and genetic profiles, and inves

Establishment of a rapid and quantitative method for detecting the range of infection exposure in preclinical dental education.

BACKGROUNDS: Safe dental treatments that prevent nosocomial and cross-infections are essential for patients and dental workers. However, dental students sometimes pay inadequate attention to infection control, especially in preclinical practice, because of too much focus on technical training, such as the use of equipment, etc. The spread of infections such as SARS-CoV-2, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and oral bacteria are sometimes lethal for medically compromised patients. Thus, the rapid and inexpensive detection system to detect and measure dental practice-related infection spread during
