Symmetric sources of exposure generally result in symmetric contact dermatitis, but patient habits may distort or modify exposures in ways that may obscure clinical relevance. We present a variant of "school chair sign" consistent with the child's usual habit of sitting obliquely with her right leg crossed over her left leg.

A case of contact dermatitis from neutral red dye applied for treatment of herpes genitalis is presented. A review of the literature revealed 5 other patients with a similar reaction. We suggest that neutral red dye treatment for herpes should be used with caution in patients with an allergic history.

BACKGROUND: Although atopic disease is associated with protein allergy, its relationship with chemicals (haptens/contact allergens and irritants) is less clearly defined. The 'hapten-atopy' hypothesis, whereby significant hapten and irritant exposure during times of natural T helper (Th)2 bias (pregnancy and first year of life) promotes the development of atopy and atopic disease in the resulting child, has been previously proposed. Supporting evidence includes the practice of repeated cutaneous application of haptens in generating animal models of atopic dermatitis, and the observation of a s

A topical corticosteroid preparation on the Swedish market, Flutivate cream, contains a fairly high concentration of formaldehyde (FA). In this study, we have investigated the clinical relevance of contact allergy to FA when treating an allergic eczema with Flutivate cream, containing an FA-releasing preservative. In a randomized, double-blind study, 7 patients hypersensitive to both FA and nickel repeatedly applied Flutivate cream containing FA or Betnovate cream not containing FA to areas of experimentally induced nickel dermatitis. 17 controls allergic to nickel, but not FA, went through th

The skin is an important barrier protecting us from mechanical insults, microorganisms, chemicals and allergens, but, importantly, also reducing water loss. A common hallmark for many dermatoses is a compromised skin barrier function, and one could suspect an elevated risk of contact sensitization (CS) and allergy following increased penetration of potential allergens. However, the relationship between common dermatoses such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis (AD) and irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) and the development of contact allergy (CA) is complex, and depends on immunologic responses and

Persistent post-occupational dermatitis is a rare variant of occupational eczemas characterized by skin symptoms which persist after the elimination of occupational allergens. Further diagnostic criteria are the followings: absence of dermatitis in past history of patients, presentation confined to both hands almost exclusively, and causal role of occupational allergens with both irritative and allergic origins is confirmed. The author presents a case which meets all these diagnostic criteria. Epidemiology of occupational dermatoses, impact on quality of life and social-economic aspects are al

Over the past several decades, latex hypersensitivity has become an increasingly common phenomenon in the dental setting. Exposure to latex via direct skin contact or inhalation of airborne allergens from powdered gloves poses the risk of sensitizing both clinicians and their patients. Adverse reactions to latex range from mild irritant contact dermatitis to potentially life-threatening hypersensitivity. The prevalence of these reactions is higher among medical and dental practitioners, those with prior allergies, patients with a history of multiple surgeries and those with spina bifida. The r

Of 7887 patients with eczema seen in a private dermatological practice over a period of 2 years and 4 months, a specific final diagnosis was found in 5376 (68%), while a final diagnosis of non-specific eczema was made in 2511 cases (32%). The most common final diagnoses were seborrhoeic dermatitis (1351), contact dermatitis (1317), atopic dermatitis (1009) and nummular eczema (822). Battery patch testing was the initial diagnostic procedure performed, and 897 of the 3164 patients who were patch tested had one or more positive patch tests. In 545 cases, the reactions were considered of relevanc

BACKGROUND: Phenolformaldehyde resins, especially the para-tertiary-butylphenolformaldehyde resin (PTBP-FR), are widely used in industry and in numerous materials of everyday use, such as glues, adhesives, or inks. They can cause many occupational and nonoccupational cases of dermatitis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-one patients with positive patch test results to PTBP-FR were selected for this study. They were patch-tested with a series of chemically related compounds and cross-reactions were noted.
RESULTS: Phenolformaldehyde resin (PF-R) was frequently positive (65.8%), whereas other compo

Allergic contact dermatitis affects a worrying proportion of the general population. The mechanisms underlying this chemical-triggered delayed-type hypersensitivity are still not fully understood. In recent years, basic research has shown that the immune system reacts to contact allergens by activation of signalling pathways that are usually used to fight infections. Ongoing work is aimed at the elucidation of the path that leads from the chemistry of contact allergens to the inflammatory skin disease. The cellular players and their complex interactions are being characterized. Proteins are be

During the COVID-19 outbreak, handwashing emerged as an essential tool to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 virus. It can put into practice using warm water and soap or, if not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers (ABHS). Anyway, the use of warm water and soap is not always possible. On the contrary, ABHS are frequently used for their versatility, but can represent a risk factor for atopic dermatitis exacerbations in the pediatric age. At the same time, the Italian Ministry of Health established a school regulation, asking the students to periodically disinfect hands with sanitizing gel, or

We report a case of a 57-years-old female farmer with occupational airborne dermatitis and hand dermatitis to hop (Humulus lupulus). The disease appeared at the age of 46, after 30 years of working with hop without any health problems. The patient had skin erythema of the face, neck and décolleté , oedema of the eyelids, conjunctivitis, as well as acute dermatitis of the hands. The symptoms were provoked both by fresh and dried hop, appeared after half-an-hour of working and persisted over 1-2 days. There were no other skin or allergic problems. Skin tests were carried out with hop leaves (sal

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that the prevalence of the frequent chronic conditions of atopic dermatitis, asthma, and allergy has increased substantially for reasons not fully understood. Atopic diseases affect quality of life in both children and their family members.
OBJECTIVE: Using national registers, we sought to establish up-to-date incidence rates of atopic dermatitis, asthma, and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis in the Danish and Swedish child populations.
METHODS: Children born in Denmark from 1997 to 2011 or born in Sweden from 2006 to 2010 participated in this cross-national

The oral allergy syndrome is one of the most common form of food allergy and manifests as contact urticaria of the oral mucosa after consumption of cross reacting foods. Whereas allergic contact stomatitis often occurs due to dental materials, allergic contact cheilitis is usually a reaction due to topical therapeutics like herpes ointments or lip care products. As late type reactions are more frequent than immediate type reactions in the anogenital mucosa, contact dermatitis in this area should be identified via epicutaneous testing. In case of contact urticaria at the genital mucosa, a semen
