The efficacy of transdermal hyoscine in the reduction of nausea, retching and vomiting was compared with placebo during and after stapedo- and tympanoplasty under local anaesthesia in a double-blind, prospective and randomized study. In the placebo group (n = 29), 69% of the patients were free from emetic symptoms during and 41% after the operation. The corresponding figures were 93% (P < 0.05) and 74% (P < 0.05) in the hyoscine group (n = 27). The patients in the placebo group needed more droperidol during and after operation (P < 0.05). We report two families in which propositi had severe bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, a preauricular pit or tag, and duplication of the ureters or bifid renal pelvices. Other relatives had one or more of these anomalies in a pattern suggesting autosomal dominant inheritance with reduced penetrance and variable expressivity. We suggest the term "branchio-oto-ureteral syndrome" to designate this condition.

Four children with short stature who received irradiation to the head in conventional doses had clinical and laboratory evidence of hypothalamic-pituitary hormone deficiencies several years later. Growth hormone was deficient in all. One patient also had evidence of TSH, ACTH, and gonadotropin deficiency.
