This study examined the combined effects of administration of exogenous GM1 ganglioside and electrical stimulation on the cochlear nucleus (CN) of cats deafened neonatally by ototoxic drugs. Five normal hearing adult cats served as controls. Another 12 cats were deafened bilaterally by daily injections of neomycin sulfate (60 mg/kg) for 17-21 days after birth until auditory brainstem testing demonstrated profound hearing loss. Six of the deaf animals comprised the GM1 group, which received daily injections of GM1 ganglioside (30 mg/kg) for 28-38 days during the period after profound deafness w

The EMG-activity during stepping-like movements evoked by spinal cord electrical stimulation (SCES) was studied in paraplegic patients. Both typical locomotor EMG-pattern with rhythmically, bilaterally alternating flexor-extensor activity ("locomotor stepping") as well as a rhythmic, bilaterally alternating modulation of short latency stimulus coupled reflexes ("reflexogenic stepping") and mixed pattern were observed. While the frequency of "locomotor stepping" could be independent from the stimulus frequency and the stepping was continuing after the end of stimulation for several cycles, the

An acute pain animal model for fMRI study would provide useful spatial and temporal information for studying the supraspinal nociceptive neuronal responses. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the nociceptive responses in different brain areas can be differentiated by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in anesthetized rats. Functional changes in brain regions activated by noxious or non-noxious stimuli of the sciatic nerve were investigated using fMRI in a 4.7 T MR system in alpha-chloralose anaesthetized rats. To determine the electrical intensity for noxio

Recent studies have shown that hypothermia triples the incidence of major cardiac events. We present a happening in which a 71-year-old patient developed pulseless electrical activity (PEA) while he was undergoing cervical laminectomy for spinal stenosis in the sitting position. Thromboembolism or venous air embolism and acute myocardial infarction were respectively excluded by transesophageal echocardiography and cardiac enzymes analysis to be the causes of the cardiac event. The abnormal finding that stood out was low nasopharyngeal temperature (31 degrees C) during the procedure, which was

The influence of scanner acoustic noise on somatosensory activation pattern in rat cortex was investigated by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast. This was achieved by two approaches. The first approach was to compare a conventional, loud fMRI sequence with a new sequence, in which the noise level was reduced by about 30 dB. In the second approach, the inner ear of the animal was destroyed, resulting in deafness. We compared the activation patterns obtained with both sequences before and after cochleotomy. The activated area

Acute experiments were conducted in sheep anaesthetized with sodium pentobarbital to identify regions in the brain where electrical stimulation would elicit secretion by the parotid and submandibular salivary glands. This was a prerequisite for single unit studies in the future. In the brainstem, parotid and submandibular secretions were evoked on average between 7 and 16 mm rostral to obex and from 1 to 11 mm lateral to midline, with the parotid gland being active on the caudal and the submandibular on the rostral sides of this region. Overlap of the two sites was common. The combined region

Four individuals with a spinal cord injury underwent 16 weeks of isometric electrical stimulation training to both legs for 60 min, five times per week during the first 5 months after injury, while two SCI individuals remained untrained. A baseline biopsy sample of the vastus lateralis muscle was obtained within 1 month of injury, and another biopsy sample was taken after a further 16 weeks. The untrained, paralyzed skeletal muscle displayed a reduction in (1) type I fibers (from 50% to 9%), (2) myosin heavy chain (MHC) I (from 27% to 6%), and (3) fiber cross-sectional area of type I, type IIA

In the circular muscle of the guinea-pig gastric antrum, the contribution of glycolysis to spontaneous electrical activity, slow wave, was studied. The slow wave could be maintained without a marked change in glucose-free solution for more than 1 h even when treated with iodoacetic acid (IAA, 0.1-0.5 mM). However, reapplication of glucose following the IAA treatment produced clear inhibitory effects on the slow wave. Lactate release from the tissue was reduced to about 10% of the control by IAA (0.1 mM) in the absence of glucose and there was very slow recovery on glucose reapplication. This s

INTRODUCTION: Episodes of atrial fibrillation (AF) are known to cause both a rapid reduction in atrial refractoriness (atrial electrical remodeling) and a more delayed increase in AF stability in the chronic goat model. The aims of this study were to examine (1) the hypothesis that an AF-induced increase in AF stability might be due to a mechanism with a longer onset and offset than that of changes in refractoriness and (2) the possibility that repeated paroxysms of maintained AF might cause a cumulative increase in AF stability independent of changes in atrial refractoriness.

Cortical and thalamic neurones play a major role in the generation/expression of spike and wave discharges (SWDs), the main electroencephalographic (EEG) feature of absence seizures. The detailed mechanisms leading to this paroxysmal EEG activity, however, are still poorly understood. We have now made in vivo intracellular recordings from layer V cortical neurones of the facial motor cortex and from thalamocortical (TC) neurones of the ventroposteromedial and ventroposterolateral nuclei in a well established model of this disease: the Genetic Absence Epilepsy Rats from Strasbourg (GAERS). The

As cochlear implants have become increasingly successful in the rehabilitation of adults with profound hearing impairment, the number of pediatric implant subjects has increased. We have developed an animal model of congenital deafness and investigated the effect of electrical stimulus frequency on the temporal resolution of central neurons in the developing auditory system of deaf cats. Maximum following frequencies (Fmax) and response latencies of isolated single neurons to intracochlear electrical pulse trains (charge balanced, constant current biphasic pulses) were recorded in the contrala

1. Pilocarpine, a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) agonist, is widely used for treatment of xerostomia and glaucoma. It can also cause many other cellular responses by activating different subtypes of mAChRs in different tissues. However, the potential role of pilocarpine in modulating cardiac function remained unstudied. 2. We found that pilocarpine produced concentration-dependent (0.1-10 microM) decrease in sinus rhythm and action potential duration, and hyperpolarization of membrane potential in guinea-pig hearts. The effects were nearly completely reversed by 1 microM atropine or

BACKGROUND: Visceral hyperalgesia is most likely a phenomenon of substantial clinical importance and may also play a role in the pathophysiology of the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We investigated the manifestation of visceral hyperalgesia in IBS patients by nociceptive electric stimulation of the rectosigmoid junction and rectum.
METHODS: Twelve IBS patients fulfilling the Rome criteria and 9 healthy controls were studied. Visceral single and repeated electric burst stimuli were applied with a bipolar electric stimulator inserted through the sigmoidoscope. The sensation (ST) and pain dete

A new hybrid functional electrical stimulation orthosis system for the upper limb has been designed to allow for ease of use in the home as a daily treatment modality, as well as offer the opportunity for function enhancement. In a pilot study, the system was used by ten patients with chronic stable hemiparesis secondary to cerebral vascular accident and head injuries. The patients were referred by their treating physicians or therapists after meeting the inclusion criteria of good general health, being greater than one year after head injury, or being ten months post-stroke, with no observed

Cerebral responses from the oesophagus were investigated in 16 normal male and female volunteers ranging in age from 20 to 54 years. The stimulus was applied by a naso-oesophageal probe equipped with bipolar ring electrodes. Short and long latency EP (SLEP and LLEP) were observed in all the subjects examined. SLEP consisted in a low threshold potential of 30 to 70 microV amplitude, biphasic or triphasic in shape and of approximately 5 to 10 ms duration; mean latency at the largest peak was 4.5 +/- 1.7 at 25 cm from the nostrils. Early components at about 2.5-3.5 ms and of small amplitude are a
