The Authors describe the clinical and electromyographic findings of a case of botulism with complete recovery. Therapy was based on anti-cholynesterasic drugs, on guanidine (at dosage of 30 mg/kg/day) and on antibotulinic serum. The neuromuscular transmission was assessed with the Desmedt's test: during the disease the EMG showed a tipical pattern of facilitation of motor units potentials during stimulation at 30 per second, becoming normal after recovery.

A case of scleroedema is reported in a 28-year-old man with severe neuromuscular involvement. Failure in neural conduction as well as muscular degeneration and necrosis were seen. Histopathological study showed resorption and formation of scar tissue probably secondary to ischaemia. In addition there was increase in neutral, sulphated and non-sulphated mucosubstances in the dermal and endomysial connective tissue.

A case of progressive external ophthalmoplegia and a slight coincident affection of the scapulohumeral muscle group is recorded. Thorough examination including EMG and biopsy from ocular and skeletal muscle tissue confirmed the clinical diagnosis of myopathy. By means of electron microscopy the affection could be identified as a type of myopathy characterized by giant mitochondriae. Causative factors were not detectable. The function of the thyroid and the carnitine level in the muscle tissue and blood serum were normal.

A review of the biofeedback literature was made and proposals for use in optometry advanced. To this end electromyograph units can be connected to an apparatus which gives a reward when a patient performs proper eye movements. These experiments describe electromyographic activity and forces developed during step-down from several heights. The external environment of the experimental subjects was varied by blindfold or Achilles' tendon vibration during descent. The authors investigated the electromyographic response to mechanical stimulation of the palmar skin (palmo-mental reflex) and plantar skin (planto-mental reflex) in the mentalis muscle.
