Protective activity of thymosin against opportunistic infections in animal models.

Animal models for opportunistic infections were developed by using mice immunosuppressed by 5-FU. These mice were susceptible to various microorganisms, while normal mice had greater tolerance to such microbial infections. In these models, thymosin alpha 1 was found to protect mice against lethal infections with Candida albicans, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Serratia marcescens when it was administered during 5-FU treatment prior to the infections. Thymosin alpha 1 was effective in some infections at 0.4-400 micrograms/kg/day IP, about 1/100 of the dose required for thym

Amikacin (BBK8) in infections due to gram-negative organisms in children over the age of one month.

Thirty children over the age of one month were treated with amikacin (BBK8), a new aminoglycoside derived from kanamycin A, with three intramuscular dosage schedules. Each group consisted of ten patients. The first received 7-5 mg/kg/12 hours, the second 7-5 mg/kg/24 hours and the third, 3-75 mg/kg/12 hours. The infections and the bacteria were similar in all three groups: pyelonephritis, abscesses of soft tissues, infected wounds, septicaemia, superinfected empyema, gastro-enteritis, chronic otitis media; the bacteria were E. coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas and Salmonella. A were sensitive by t

[Pathogenicity factors of gramnegative enteropathogenic bacteria and pathogenesis of intestinal diseases (author's transl)].

Enterotoxins as produced by the majority of enteropathogenic bacteria play a central role in the pathogenesis of cholera and E. coli enteritis but are obviously of little significance as to the development of Salmonella enteritis and dysentery. Pathology of Salmonella enteritis and dysentery results from multiplication of bacteria within the bowel wall and from the damage of tissue caused thereby. The lipopolysaccharides (endotoxins) of invasive enteropathogenic bacteria do not possess the character of a primary pathogenicity factor but operate as a protective agent versus bactericidal mechani

Isolation an Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profile of Edwardsiella Species and Escherichia coli O157:H7 From Fish and Their Handling Environment in Lake Abaya and Gilgel Gibe-3 Dam, Southern Ethiopia.

Edwardsiella species are reassigned under the family Hafniaceae following phylogenomic revisions of the order Enterobacterales, a primary pathogenic strain of fish, while Escherichia coli are members of the Enterobacteriaceae family that are frequently reported as contaminants with rare causes of illness in fish but severely affect other mammals. A cross-sectional study was conducted from April to November 2022 with the objectives of estimating the prevalence of Edwardsiella tarda, Edwardsiella ictaluri, and E. coli O157:H7 in fish and determining the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of th

Unpacking Environment Overrides Meat Type in Shaping the Bacterial Community and Potential Spoilage Organisms of Ready-to-Eat Meats During Refrigerated Storage.

Microbial contamination in ready-to-eat (RTE) meat products poses a significant food safety risk, as evidenced by previous reports of high aerobic plate counts and pathogen prevalence. Understanding the post-unpacking dynamics of bacterial communities is crucial for guiding consumer practices. In this study, 90 RTE meat samples of which the varieties include beef products, chicken products, duck products, pig products, mutton products, and donkey products, were collected to analyze microbial community structure by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. These samples were collected on the 7th, 14th and

A Lactococcus lactis Starter Culture Reduces the Bloater Defect in Cucumber Fermentations Brined With Low Salt.

The cucumber intrinsic Enterobacter and Leuconostoc generate sufficient carbon dioxide (CO2) in early fermentation, particularly those brined without sodium chloride, to induce bloater defects prior to the onset of Lactiplantibacillus pentosus. Because of the Lactococcus lactis short doubling time, it is proposed as a starter culture for cucumber fermentation brined with 342 mM (2%) sodium chloride to prevent bloater defects. A screening of putative decarboxylases (27) in the cucumber fermentation bacteriome identified substantially more of such enzymes in Enterobacteriaceae (24 or 89%) relati

Optimization of composite microbial agents containing plant inter-root growth-promoting bacteria and verification using mini Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. Pekinensis).

Microbial agent research has developed from single strain to multi-strain complex studies, and Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) has emerged as a hot topic in relation to biofertilizers. Soil environmental degradation problems, such as soil compaction and fertility decline in the Hexi region of Gansu, China, are the focus of this study. The enrichment of PGPR resources and the elucidation of the plant growth-promoting effects of the PGPR strains are also investigated. This study isolated 26-PGPR strains from plant inter-root soils with phosphorous solubilizing ability, 15 strains wit

The impact of the gut microbiome on the development of atherosclerosis and peripheral arterial disease: A narrative review.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic, progressive process affecting medium and large arteries, while peripheral artery disease (PAD) represents one of its clinical manifestations in the limb arteries. Although classical risk factors such as poor diet, hypertension, diabetes, and smoking are well established, increasing evidence indicates that the gut microbiome is an important and modifiable contributor to vascular pathophysiology. This paper reviews current knowledge on the role of the gut microbiome in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis and PAD, with emphasis on bacterial metabolites,

Capsular polysaccharide enables Klebsiella pneumoniae to evade phagocytosis by blocking host-bacteria interactions.

UNLABELLED: Capsule polysaccharide (CPS) is among the most important virulence factors of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Previous studies demonstrated that CPS plays multiple functional roles, but the mechanism by which this virulence factor enhances the survival fitness of K. pneumoniae remains unclear. In this work, we demonstrate that CPS is the main cellular component that not only elicits the host immune response to K. pneumoniae but also enables this pathogen to survive for a prolonged period under adverse environmental conditions. Consistently, our in vitro experiments suggest that CPS prevents

In Vitro Synergistic Effect of Colistin with Fosfomycin Against Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae.

BACKGROUND: The dwindling antibiotic reserve owing to augmented drug-resistant bacteria is a major handicap for treating physicians. Klebsiella pneumoniae, a gram-negative encapsulated member of the Enterobacteriaceae family, is one such pathogenic bacteria. Carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae is globally recognized as one of the most critical bacterial threats to public health due to its extremely limited treatment options. Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) infections pose therapeutic challenges due to simultaneous resistance to various other groups of antibiotics. I
