Epidemiology of acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure in Australian and New Zealand intensive care units during 2005-2022. A binational, registry-based study.

PURPOSE: Acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure (AHRF) is a common reason for intensive care unit (ICU) admission. However, patient characteristics, outcomes, and trends over time are unclear. We describe the epidemiology and outcomes of patients with AHRF over time. METHODS: In this binational, registry-based study from 2005 to 2022, we included all adults admitted to an Australian or New Zealand ICU with an arterial blood gas within the first 24 h of ICU stay. AHRF was defined as a partial pressure of oxygen/inspired oxygen ratio (PaO2/FiO2) ≤ 300. The primary outcome was adjusted in-hospital

Epidemiology of Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale spp. in a highly malaria-endemic country: a longitudinal cohort study in Kinshasa Province, Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Increasing reports suggest that non-falciparum species are an underappreciated cause of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, but their epidemiology is not well-defined. This is particularly true in regions of high P. falciparum endemicity such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where 12% of the world's malaria cases and 13% of deaths occur. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The cumulative incidence and prevalence of P. malariae and P. ovale spp. infection detected by real-time PCR were estimated among children and adults within a longitudinal study conducted in seven rural, peri-urban, and

Increased body weight and central adiposity markers are positively associated with the 20-year incidence of cardiovascular disease: The ATTICA epidemiological study (2002-2022).

Increased adiposity predisposes to cardiovascular disease (CVD). We hypothesized that the presence of obesity would be positively associated with CVD risk, and that the co-presence of central obesity would modify/enhance this association. This was a prospective study (2002-2022) among 1845 Greek adults (mean age, 44.8 ± 13.5 years; men, 49.8%). At baseline, the presence of overweight/obesity was assessed via body mass index (BMI), whereas central obesity was defined as waist circumference ≥102/88 cm, waist-to-hip-ratio ≥0.95/0.80, or waist-to-height-ratio ≥0.50 in men/women. BMI was reevaluate

Changed epidemiology of narcolepsy before, during, and after the 2009 H1N1 pandemic: a nationwide narcolepsy surveillance network study in mainland China, 1990-2017.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Increased incidence of narcolepsy was reported in children during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic following Pandemrix, a H1N1 flu vaccine. A link with A(H1N1) pdm09 infections remains controversial. Using nationwide surveillance data from China (1990 to 2017), the epidemiology of narcolepsy was analyzed. METHODS: Individual records of narcolepsy patients were collected from 15 of 42 hospitals across China known to diagnose cases. Incidence was estimated assuming the representativeness of these hospitals. Age-specific incidence, epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients

Epidemiological characteristics and real-world treatment outcomes of hepatitis C among HIV/HCV co-infected patients in Myanmar: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In Myanmar, public sector treatment programs for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection were nonexistent until June 2017. WHO highlights the importance of simplification of HCV service delivery through task-shifting among health workers and decentralization to the primary health care level. Between November 2016 and November 2017, a study was conducted to describe the epidemiological data and real-world outcomes of treating HIV/HCV coinfected patients with generic direct acting antiviral (DAA) based regimens in the three HIV clinics run by nonspecialist medical doctors in Myanm

Major dietary patterns of community dwelling adults and their associations with impaired blood glucose and central obesity in Eastern Ethiopia: Diet-disease epidemiological study.

BACKGROUNDS: Unhealthy dietary intake is an important preventable risk factor for obesity and impaired blood glucose (IBG), ultimately increasing the risk of non-communicable diseases. When compared to individual food intakes, dietary patterns are a stronger predictor of health outcomes and should be systematically evaluated where such evidence is lacking. This study evaluated dietary patterns and their association with the risk of central obesity and IBG among adults. METHODS: A community-based survey was conducted among 501 randomly-selected adults from Eastern Ethiopia. Data was collected

Incidence, prognostic factors, and survival outcomes in patients with blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm: A retrospective study in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database.

There are few large-scale epidemiological and prognostic studies on blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) due to its rarity. We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database to investigate the incidence, clinical characteristics, prognostic factors, and survival trends of BPDCN. The age-adjusted incidence of BPDCN had a bimodal pattern with peaks in those under 20 and 60 years and older. Of 697 patients, the median age at diagnosis was 31 years. The most common primary sites were lymph nodes (59.4%), followed by bone marrow (17.1%) and skin (11.6%). Extranodal in
