Quantitative 18F-FDG PET-CT can assess presence and extent of interstitial lung disease in early severe diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the quantitative uptake of 18F-FDG PET-CT in the lungs of patients with early severe diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (SSc) with and without interstitial lung disease (ILD), compared to controls. In patients with SSc-ILD, 18F-FDG uptake was correlated to high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and pulmonary function test (PFT) parameters. METHODS: A prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted, involving 15 patients with SSc-ILD, 5 patients with SSc without ILD, and 7 controls without SSc. 18F-FDG PET-CT scans were performed following standard

End-of-treatment 18[F]-FDG PET can predict early progression in patients receiving bendamustine-rituximab for follicular lymphoma in first relapse: a prospective West Japan hematology Study Group (W-JHS) NHL01 trial.

Response determined by 18[F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)-CT after induction therapy can predict progression-free survival (PFS) in follicular lymphoma (FL). However, little prospective research has examined the significance of PET after second-line therapy. We conducted a prospective multicenter phase II trial (W-JHS NHL01) of bendamustine plus rituximab (BR) without rituximab maintenance for FL in first relapse. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of end-of-treatment (EOT)-PET for predicting PFS in FL patients in first relapse. EOT-PET examina

Fine needle aspiration diagnosis of benign oncocytic lesions of the head and neck associated with false positive 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake on positron emission tomography scan.

INTRODUCTION: 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake on positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) has become the mainstay for staging and post-therapy surveillance of cancer as malignant neoplasms generally demonstrate higher FDG uptake that benign entities. However, there are certain benign lesions, most notably oncocytic tumors, that can display very high uptake and fine needle aspiration (FNA) is usually done to confirm malignancy. Therefore, it is important to recognize that benign oncocytic lesions of the head and neck may also present as FDG-avid lesions to avoid a diagnosti

Subcutaneous Panniculitis-like T Cell Lymphoma Diagnosed with a Slowly Progressive Course: A Case Report.

Panniculitis is an inflammation that occurs in subcutaneous adipose tissue. Panniculitis includes physical panniculitis (e.g., traumatic) and infectious panniculitis (e.g., bacterial, fungal, subcutaneous panniculitis-like T cell lymphoma [SPCTL], etc.). Accurate diagnosis is crucial due to similar clinical presentation of all types of panniculitis. Here, we report a case of SPCTL which was initially diagnosed with traumatic panniculitis. A 15-year-old male patient was admitted to a previous hospital due to a progressively enlarged right flank and inguinal mass after an abdominal bruise. He wa

[A Resected Case of Mesenteric Nodal Metastases from Small Cell Lung Carcinoma].

A 65-year-old woman with small cell lung carcinoma(T2N2M0, Stage ⅢA)underwent chemoradiation therapy. During the follow-up study after the partial response of chemoradiation therapy, the serum level of ProGRP was elevated. X-ray computed tomography(CT)showed a 8 cm long mesenteric mass adjacent to ileocecal vessels, which indicated high level of standardized uptake value(SUV)max(12.6)by fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography( FDG-PET/CT). No gastrointestinal malignancy was observed. Mesenteric nodal metastasis from lung carcinoma was primarily diagnosed, however, p

Adrenal functional imaging - which marker for which indication?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In recent years, a broad spectrum of molecular image biomarkers for assessment of adrenal functional imaging have penetrated the clinical arena. Those include positron emission tomography and single photon emission computed tomography radiotracers, which either target glucose transporter, CYP11B enzymes, C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4, norepinephrine transporter or somatostatin receptors. We will provide an overview of key radiopharmaceuticals and determine their most relevant clinical applications, thereby providing a roadmap for the right image biomarker at the right tim

Preclinical evaluation of [18F]FDG-PET as a biomarker of lymphoid tissue disease and inflammation in Zika virus infection.

PURPOSE: Zika (ZIKV) is a viral inflammatory disease affecting adults, children, and developing fetuses. It is endemic to tropical and sub-tropical countries, resulting in half the global population at risk of infection. Despite this, there are no approved therapies or vaccines against ZIKV disease. Non-invasive imaging biomarkers are potentially valuable tools for studying viral pathogenesis, prognosticating host response to disease, and evaluating in vivo efficacy of experimental therapeutic interventions. In this study, we evaluated [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose ([18F]FDG)-positron emission tomog

Brown adipose tissue is associated with healthier body fat distribution and metabolic benefits independent of regional adiposity.

The association of brown adipose tissue (BAT) and body fat distribution and their combined effects on metabolic health in humans remains unknown. Here, we retrospectively identify individuals with and without BAT on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) and assemble a propensity score-matched study cohort to compare body fat distribution and determine its role in mediating the benefits of brown fat. We find that BAT is associated with lower amounts of visceral adipose tissue and higher amounts of subcutaneous adipose tissue, resulting in l

The role of multimodality imaging in diagnosing acute perimyocarditis secondary to Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: Acute perimyocarditis is a rare extra-intestinal manifestation in Crohn's disease which required multimodality imaging to confirm the diagnosis. Here we present a case of acute perimyocarditis as the first presentation of Crohn's disease. To date, this is the first case presentation reporting the use of 18F-FDG PET/CT Scan for diagnosing such condition. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old male presented to our hospital with severe persistent pleuritic sharp left-sided chest pain. This was his second hospital admission in the past 4 months for chest pain and diarrhea. At the first hos

[18F]-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/CT to Assess the Early Metabolic Response in Patients with Hormone Receptor-Positive HER2-Negative Metastasized Breast Cancer Treated with Cyclin-Dependent 4/6 Kinase Inhibitors.

INTRODUCTION: Addition of cyclin-dependent 4/6 kinase (CDK4/6) inhibitors to endocrine therapy is standard of care in the treatment of women with advanced hormone receptor-positive HER2-negative breast cancer. However, the predictive factors for the treatment response to CDK4/6 inhibitor therapy are poorly elucidated. Early changes in the by [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) uptake of tumors receiving different kinds of therapy have proven to reliably predict treatment outcomes in a variety of malignancies. Therefore, the feasibility of early metabolic response as

Mediastinal FDG-positive lymph nodes simulating melanoma progression: drug-induced sarcoidosis like/lymphadenopathy related to ipilimumab.

Drug-induced sarcoidosis-like reactions (DISRs) are systemic granulomatous diseases that develop in the context of a new drug onset. Ipilimumab is an immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) approved for the treatment of advanced melanoma which has been associated with DISR. Differential diagnosis between tumour progression and DISR by positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in patients treated with an ICI can be a challenge. A 31-year-old woman was diagnosed with a stage IIIB melanoma in her back. Ipilimumab 10 mg/kg was initiated. After 1 month of finishing the treatment a routine

18F-FDG PET/CT Monitoring of Response to Programmed Death Protein 1 Blockade in Metastatic Basal Cell Carcinoma.

A 73-year-old woman with history of metastatic basal cell carcinoma presented with a large spinal mass demonstrating a high mutational burden of 111 mutations/Mb. She underwent T12 corpectomy and T10-L3 posterior spinal fusion followed by adjuvant radiation. After 2 years of surveillance, FDG PET/CT and a contrast-enhanced MRI revealed recurrence, prompting salvage therapy with the hedgehog signaling pathway inhibitor, sonidegib, which only transiently stabilized the disease. An off-label treatment with the programmed death protein 1 inhibitor, pembrolizumab, was initiated. Serial FDG PET/CT s

Systematic Evaluation of Kinetics and Distribution of Muscle and Lymph Node Activation Measured by 18F-FDG- and 11C-PBR28-PET/CT Imaging, and Whole Blood and Muscle Transcriptomics After Immunization of Healthy Humans With Adjuvanted and Unadjuvanted Vaccines.

Systems vaccinology has been applied to detect signatures of human vaccine induced immunity but its ability, together with high definition in vivo clinical imaging is not established to predict vaccine reactogenicity. Within two European Commission funded high impact programs, BIOVACSAFE and ADITEC, we applied high resolution positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scanning using tissue-specific and non-specific radioligands together with transcriptomic analysis of muscle biopsies in a clinical model systematically and prospectively comparing vaccine-induced immune/inflammato

Benefits of positron emission tomography scans for the evaluation of radiotherapy.

The assessment of tumour response during and after radiotherapy determines the subsequent management of patients (adaptation of treatment plan, monitoring, adjuvant treatment, rescue treatment or palliative care). In addition to its role in extension assessment and therapeutic planning, positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography provides useful functional information for the evaluation of tumour response. The objective of this article is to review published data on positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography as a tool for evaluating external radiotherapy

Fibroblast Activation Protein-Targeted PET/CT with 68Ga-FAPI for Imaging IgG4-Related Disease: Comparison to 18F-FDG PET/CT.

IgG4-related disease (RD) is characterized by lymphoplasmacytic infiltration enriched in IgG4-positive plasma cells and variable degrees of fibrosis with a characteristic storiform pattern. Since fibrosis is an important feature of IgG4-RD, we performed a prospective cohort study to evaluate the performance of 68Ga-fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (FAPI), a recently introduced PET agent targeting fibroblast activation protein, in IgG4-RD. Methods: Twenty-six patients with IgG4-RD were recruited. All patients underwent both 68Ga-FAPI and 18F-FDG PET/CT. The positive rates of the PET/CT s
