Surgical excision of the submandibular gland is the treatment of choice for lesions affecting this gland. The data of 87 patients, who underwent a transcervical extirpation of the submandibular gland as a single operation over the past 10 years at a single institution in Germany, were available for analysis. Sialolithiasis (73.5%) was the most common reason leading to excision, followed by benign (18.5%) and malignant tumors (8%). Passerines are frequently parasitized by coccidia, especially species of the genus Isospora, with extra-intestinal stages that can be highly pathogenic causing serious clinical damage in young birds. Whilst there is still no effective treatment to completely clear isosporoid coccidia with extra-intestinal stages from a host species, our results showed that prolonged treatment with toltrazuril (BAYER AG, Leverkusen, Germany) can decrease the oocysts in faeces and thus reduce the extra-intestinal phase of the infection. The first member of the next generation CoreValve "family" is the 23 mm CoreValve® Evolut™ (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA), which is indicated for an annulus range of 18 mm to 20 mm and extends the spectrum of patients with aortic stenosis that can be treated with the self-expanding CoreValve bioprosthesis. The Core-Valve Evolut provides several technical refinements and is designed to enable re-capturability in the future. Here, we report on the first case in a 93-year-old female patient who was implanted at the University Hospital Bonn, Germany, on June 1st, 2012.

Palmoplantar tylosis is a focal nonepidermolytic palmoplantar hyperkeratosis, which is inherited as an autosomal dominant condition. Two types have been described: an early onset type B tylosis, which occurs in the first year of life and is usually benign, and type A tylosis, which occurs between the ages of 5 and 15 years. Type A tylosis has been associated with a high incidence of oesophageal carcinoma in three families in England, Germany and the USA. This study describes an additional family from Spain with tylosis A, without any known relation to those described before.

In Germany, deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the thalamic ventralis intermedius nucleus (VIM) is licensed for treatment of essential tremor in cases unresponsive to pharmacotherapy. Especially a bothersome hand tremor interfering with activities of daily living will improve, whereas head, tongue or vocal tremor shows less response. In addition to articles written by Prof. Dr. M. Matsuoka previously reported in Part 2, books written by him are presented as Part 3 of the articles regarding his academic achievements. He published four text books, including the first textbook of orthopaedic surgery in Japan that was written by a Japanese doctor and a monograph on the x-ray atlas of congenital dislocation of the hip that was written in German and published in Germany. He was also invited to submit articles to three books as co-author. Furthermore, his five educational lectures given to the public were published in two books.

Screening for colorectal cancer starts with digital exploration of the rectum and was extended in 1977 using the haemoccult test. It was referred to detect 24% of malignancies, but with a high number of false positive findings. Combination of regular follow up examinations and coloscopy reached a sensitivity of 80%. INTRODUCTION: Intramedullary preparation and endoscopy of long bone is not mentioned in literature. We present our first results of experimental intramedullary endoscopy of long bone.
METHODS: Experimental tests were performed at 4 corpse bones (twice tibia, twice femur).
RESULTS: Intramedullary endoscopy and preparation was possible in all cases. A good view for inspection of the medullary canal was achieved by using the endoscope (Wolf GmbH, Germany).

A simple method is proposed for analysis of stimulant laxatives and metabolites of laxatives in urine. All stimulant laxatives commercially available in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, the diphenylmethane derivatives and the anthraquinones, were included. An equal accuracy of commercially available kits, i.e., the reverse passive latex agglutination test (RPLA-Oxoid) and the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (SET-EIA Riedel Haen, Germany) to identify the presence of the staphylococcal enterotoxin B and the toxic shock syndrome toxin TSST-1 as well as the PCR-technique to detect the presence of the seb and tst-genes was demonstrated in 18 Staphylococcus aureus isolates. Report on a patient with Opitz-Trigonocephaly-Syndrome who was diagnosed at the age of ten months. He had a trigonocephaly and multiple other stigmata including oblique orbital fissures, internal strabism, high and narrow palate with broad alveolar ridges, microstomia, large dysplastic ears, nuchal cutis laxa, broad clumsy fingers. This is a case report of a 36-year-old patient who developed an amebic liver abscess after a stay in the Sudan. He was first misdiagnosed as having pneumonia of the right lower lobe. The incidence of malignant melanoma has increased worldwide, the rate in Germany being about 12 per 100,000.
