A histological study of the eye lesions in 12 leprosy patients with tuberculoid lesion in 4 eyes.

The histological reactions in 12 eyes of 12 leprosy patients were studied (5 BT, 1 BB, 1 BL and 5 LL). Granuloma lesions composed of epithelioid cells, Langerhans giant cells, macrophages and lymphocytes were found in various intraocular tissues, e.g. cornea, sclera, iris, ciliary body or retina in 4 patients (1 BT and 3 LL). Of the 3 LL patients, according to the records, 2 were cured and in the other patient the outcome of the treatment was not mentioned. In view of the finding of the granulomatous lesions in the clinically cured patients and tuberculoid granuloma in the intraocular tissues …

Non-excretory myeloma with diffuse osteolytic lesions caused by tumor necrosis factor: report of a case.

A 63-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital after a six-month complaint of low back pain. Anemia, hypercalcemia and 5 to 18% giant abnormal binucleated plasma cells infiltrations in the bone marrow suggested a diagnosis of multiple myeloma. However, repeated serum and urine immunofixation electrophoresis failed to demonstrate any abnormal monoclonal band. Diagnosis of non-excretory myeloma was verified by immunocytochemical stains demonstrating intracellular kappa chain in these neoplastic cells. Some authors have claimed that there were fewer bone lytic changes, less bone marrow i

Cell-matrix patterns in the cutaneous lesion of chromomycosis.

Chromomycosis is a chronic fungal infection characterized by dermal fibrosis with persisting fungi in situ, generally leading to a verrucous … dermis; dense connective matrix around inflammatory infiltrates, mainly composed of macrophages and giant cells, and organized granuloma in the dermis. Active fibroblasts and mast cells were constantly observed. The inability of fibrotic tissue to be remodelled seems correlated to the nature and the organization of the matrix components but, the factors trigg …

Experimental beryllium-induced lung disease. I. Differences in immunologic responses to beryllium compounds in strains 2 and 13 guinea pigs.

Granulomatous lung disease was produced in strain 2 but not strain 13 guinea pigs by endotracheal injection of beryllium oxide (BeO), although isolated multinucleated giant cells containing crystalline material were found in lungs of both strains. Disease was also produced in (2 x 13) F1 hybrids, but of a milder form than in strain 2. In BeO-treated strain 2 and F1 animals, challenge with beryllium salts produced delayed hypersensitivity skin reactivity, and in vitro, enhanced tritiated thymidine uptake and lymphokine production by lymph node cells. No evidence was found for involvement of hum…

Acute myelofibrosis in children with Down's syndrome.

Two boys with Down's syndrome, recognized at birth, developed acute myelogibrosis at the ages of 19 and 21 months. The disorder presented with anaemia and splenomegaly, and clinically resembled acute leukaemia, but bone marrow histology showed a bizarre pattern with generalized fibrosis, markedly increased reticulin, large reticulum cells, and giant cells resembling megakaryocytes. The children survived 6 and 11 months from diagnosis. A third case is quoted (Hillman and Forrester, 1968) which was also studied at this hospital; the features of all 3 cases are similar. There appears to be an inc…

Induction of new-bone formation in the host bed by human bone-tumor transplants in athymic nude mice.

UNLABELLED: Specimens of twelve osteosarcomas, five chondrosarcomas, one giant-cell tumor, and five extraskeletal soft-tissue sarcomas were transplanted into male athymic nude (nu/nu) mice. Survival of the transplant was determined by the volume-doubling time and the sex chromatin of the tumor cells obtained from two female patients. By these criteria and the similarity of the histological composition of the original tumor and the transplant, survival occurred in four of twelve osteosarcomas and four of five chondrosarcomas. Without any local infiltration of lymphocytes or plasma cells, or oth

Dysfunction in Sertoli cells participates in glucocorticoid-induced impairment of spermatogenesis.

The effect of stress on male fertility is a widespread public health issue, but less is known about the related signaling pathway. To investigate this, we established a hypercortisolism mouse model by supplementing the drinking water with corticosterone for four weeks. In the hypercortisolism mice, the serum corticosterone was much higher than in the control, and serum testosterone was significantly decreased. Moreover, corticosterone treatment induced decrease of sperm counts and increase of teratozoospermia. Increased numbers of multinucleated giant cells and apoptotic germ cells as well as …

Voluminous solitary non-Hodgkin extraganglionary lymphoma of thigh.

The case of a 36-year-old woman is presented. She had a voluminous tumour inside the 1/3 average part of the right thigh at 12 cm from the inguinal region. Apart from some local pains, she had a normal haematological formula, normal spleen, liver and lymph nodes. As the tumour of 5.5 x 5 x 4.5 cm was well incapsulated between the sartorius muscle and the great adductor tendon it was easily extirpated and presented a whitish-light yellow section. The histological cellular aspect was pleiomorphic with round, ovalar cells; some were big and clear cells of centroblast-type with several mitoses and

Morphologic differences between polyarteritis and Wegener's granulomatosis using light, electron and immunohistochemical techniques.

The differential diagnosis of renal biopsies of patients with polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) versus those with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is … nophils, whereas in WG mononuclear cells dominate the picture. Monocytes and macrophages, including giant cells in the crescents, periglomerular infiltrates, and in the granulomas are seen, whereas in the interstitium, plasma cells predominate. The histologic ultrastructural and immunohistochemical findings in both groups will be discussed.

Characterization of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected cells in infiltrates associated with CNS opportunistic infections in patients with HIV clade C infection.

Infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) clade C is the most common HIV infection worldwide, yet its impact on the nervous system r … n patients with toxoplasma encephalitis. Interestingly, none of the patients had any multinucleated giant cells. HIV-infected cells were found in the parenchyma, perivascular regions, and choroid plexus and found infiltrating the parenchyma from the meninges, suggesting multiple portals of entry into the brain. These findings suggest the possibility that pati …

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the breast.

Extranodal follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is an extremely uncommon tumor with only a single case arising in the breast having been reported. We describe the clinico-pathological features of an additional FDCS of the lower outer quadrant of the right breast in a 40-year-old woman. The tumor showed three patterns of growth, i.e., diffuse, myxoid and fascicular. The neoplastic cells were large, polygonal, with a slightly eosinophilic cytoplasm and oval or convoluted nuclei. They were intermingled with small lymphocytes, plasma cells and a few bizarre multinucleated giant cells. In the f…

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the parotid gland. Report of a case with extensive amyloid deposition masking the cytologic and histopathologic picture.

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytomas are uncommon. Although approximately 90% occur in the head and neck region, parotid gland localization is extremely rare. CASE: This report describes fine needle aspiration and histopathologic findings in an extramedullary plasmacytoma arising in the left parotid gland of a 62-year-old man. Aspiration smears showed multiple amorphous clumps of material admixed with ductal epithelial cells, multinucleated giant cells and inflammatory cells rich in plasma cells, suggestive of pleomorphic adenoma. In surgical material, excessive amyloid deposition was obs…

The immunopathology of Schistosoma mansoni granulomas in human colonic schistosomiasis.

The immunopathology of Schistosoma mansoni infection was studied in colonic biopsies obtained from 14 patients with established schistosomia … granulomas, MHC class II positive cells tend to disappear and the centrally located multinucleated giant cells are negative for antibodies directed against MHC class II antigens. It appears thus that the composition of the granulomas in schistosomiasis is variable. The lesions may have characteristics of cell-mediated immunity and/or of a foreign-body reacti …

Large-cell intestinal lymphoma occurring in coeliac disease: morphological and immunohistochemical features.

Histological material was studied in five unselected cases of intestinal large-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, occurring in patients either with previously diagnosed coeliac disease, or with atrophic mucosa at the time of diagnosis. The morphological diagnosis in each case was centroblastic lymphoma: these tumours were composed of large cells with pale nuclei and prominent nucleoli. No phagocytosis was evident, but some cells showed considerable pleomorphism. Polykaryotic giant cells were infrequent. Immunohistochemical staining for lysozyme, alpha-1-anti-trypsin and alpha-1-anti-chymotrypsin fai…

Effect of antihistamines and chlorpromazine on the calcium-induced hyperpolarization of the Amphiuma red cell membrane.

1. It has previously been demonstrated that an increase in extracellular Ca2+ conce-tratio- induces a trandient increase in K+ permeability and associated hyperpolarization of the red cell membrane of the giant salamander, Amphiuma meand. This phenomenon is analogous to the Ca2+-induced KCl loss observed in ATP-depleted human red cells and red cell ghosts. 2. Histamine, which enhances the Ca2+-induced K+ loss from depleted human red cells, is without effect on this Ca2+-induced hyperpolarization of Amphiuma red cells. 3. Promethazine (10 muM) and mepyramine (1 mM), which inhibit the Ca2+-induc

A quantitative study of smooth muscle cells in reflux, obstructed, and triad bladders. A preliminary report;

This quantitative study has shown that the average size of the vesical smooth muscle cells of humans increases with age, whereas the average nuclear size remains constant. In the bladders of six babies with proven outflow obstruction, the cell size was signigicantly increased. In 23 of 25 bladders of infants and children with vesicoureteral reflux there was no apparent hypertrophy, but in two the cells were larger than normal and the micturition cystourethrograms exhibited features which may signify impairment of outflow. In two autopsy bladder specimens of two newborn, triad syndrome babies,

Crowned Dens Syndrome: A Case Report Describing Refractory Symptoms.

Crowned dens syndrome (CDS) is a type of calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease that causes inflammation and pain due to calcium deposition in the odontoid process. Patients typically present with acute cervical pain often associated with fevers, elevated ESR and CRP, and leukocytosis. This presentation has a broad differential and raises concern for diagnoses such as giant cell arteritis and meningitis. In this case report, we describe a patient with classic CT scan findings of odontoid calcifications diagnosed with treatment-refractory CDS.

Brown Tumor of Hyperparathyroidism Presenting as Mandibular Mass.

Mandibular tumors could be benign or malignant. Benign lesions could be cystic or solid. Examples of benign solid lesions are ameloblastoma, odontoma, and ossifying fibroma. Periapical cysts, follicular cysts, and odontogenic keratocysts are a few benign cystic lesions. Hemangioma, neurofibroma, giant cell granuloma, and metabolic bone disease are additional lesions to be considered in the differential diagnosis. An important uncommon cause of a mandibular mass is a Brown tumor secondary to primary hyperparathyroidism. Presented here is a case of a mandibular mass secondary to primary hyperpar

Silent Inflammation: A Case of Blurry Vision Raising Diagnostic Challenges in an Elderly Patient.

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a large vessel vasculitis with cranial and extracranial vessel involvement. Clinicians suspect GCA when a patient exhibits symptoms or exam findings of temporal headache with sudden vision loss, jaw or tongue claudication, scalp tenderness, abnormal temporal artery exam, and diagnostic findings, including elevated inflammatory markers. We present a case, which highlights that, despite established diagnostic measures, challenges persist. The unexpected presentation serves as a valuable reminder of the condition's diverse manifestations.
