Patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis is sensitive to concurrent infection and impact glucocorticoid response and disease prognosis. Glucocorticoids can increase the incidence and of serious infections and fungal infections. Among them, Gram-negative bacterial infections are the major one, and invasive fungal infections are not uncommon. Early diagnosis and empiric anti-infective therapy are important means for severe alcoholic hepatitis with concurrent infection. Anti-infective strategies covering multiple drug-resistant bacteria should be timely formulated after determining the high risk …

Cupriavidus pauculus is a gram-negative bacillus aerobic bacteria widely distributed in nature that can cause, in rare cases, serious infections both in immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients. We describe a case of an elderly patient admitted in emergency room with septic shock and diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. During his hospital stay, his clinical and analytical conditions have deteriorated. Blood cultures were positive for C. pauculus only sensitive to minocycline. Despite every effort, due to multiple comorbidities and a nosocomial pneumonia, the patient ends up dying.

The emergence and transmission of multidrug resistance (MDR) gene cfr have incurred great public health concerns worldwide. Recently, Gram-negative pathogens were found to carry cfr by various mobile elements. Here, we investigated a cfr-positive Vibrio diabolicus isolate by phenotyping and genomic analysis and found cfr in a translocatable structure (IS26-hp-cfr-IS26) among the MDR region in pNV27-cfr-208K, an emerging MDR plasmid in Vibrio species. This study highlights the necessity of surveillance of cfr in bacteria of diverse origins.

Gram-negative bacteria remodel their surfaces to interact with the environment, particularly to protect pathogens from immune surveillance and host defenses. The enzyme AlmG is known to be involved in remodeling the Vibrio cholerae surface, but its specific role was not clear. A new study characterizes AlmG at the molecular level, showing it defies phylogenetic expectations to add amino acids to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). This LPS modification plays a pivotal role in V. cholerae resistance to antimicrobial peptides, weapons of the innate immune system against infections.

The gram-negative bacteria Brucella melitensis was investigated to evaluate its susceptibility to UVC radiation at 254 nm. At an intensity of 18.7 mW/cm2 of UVC, the time required for inactivation of B. melitensis was 240 seconds in both dark and light, whereas it was 120 seconds and 240 seconds in dark and light respectively at an intensity of 19.5 mW/cm2. The results indicate that vaccinal strain of B. melitensis (Rev.1) is more sensitive to UVC than wild B. melitensis strain.

Plesiomonas shigelloides are ubiquitous Gram-negative bacteria that are found in fresh or marine water, particularly in tropical or warm climates; they were recently implicated in diarrhoeal disease. Patients usually present with a history of recent travel to tropical regions or consumption of uncooked seafood. Extraintestinal disease has rarely been reported, occurring generally in neonates or immunocompromised patients, and is often fatal. We report a case of right pyosalpinx due to P. shigelloides acquired by swimming in contaminated water. Laparoscopic salpingectomy led to a good outcome.

Nosocomial bronchopulmonary infections are common and severe complications, particularly in intensive care units. The high incidence of pneumonia is related to multiple factors such as underlying disease, acute respiratory failure, nutritional disorders, depressed mental status and the frequent need tracheal intubation. The most frequent cause of respiratory tract infection is aspiration of oropharyngeal secretions. In hospitalized patients, there is usually an oropharyngeal colonization with Gram-negative bacteria. Prevention of nosocomial bronchopulmonary infections requires close attention …

FAN medium was formulated to improve microbial recovery, particularly for fastidious microorganisms and for microorganisms causing sepsis in patients receiving antimicrobial therapy. In a controlled clinical evaluation performed at four university-affiliated hospitals, FAN anaerobic bottles were compared with standard anaerobic bottles for yield, speed of detection of microbial growth, and detection of septic episodes. A total of 10,431 blood culture sets were received; both anaerobic bottles of 7,694 blood culture sets were adequately filled with blood. Altogether, 925 isolates were recovered

BACKGROUND: Severe bacterial infections can trigger acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome, with bacterial pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) exacerbating the inflammatory response, particularly in COVID-19 patients. Cyclic-di-GMP (CDG), one of the PAMPs, is synthesized by various Gram-positve and Gram-negative bacteria. Previous studies mainly focused on the inflammatory responses triggered by intracellular bacteria-released CDG. However, how extracellular CDG, which is released by bacterial autolysis or rupture, activates the inflammatory response remains…

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to characterize the in vitro and in vivo biological properties of a novel series of small-molecule bacterial type IIA topoisomerase inhibitors.
METHODS: Bacterial susceptibility testing was performed by broth microdilution. Resistance frequencies were determined by plating bacteria onto agar containing test compound and enumerating mutants. Bacteria were passaged using subinhibitory concentrations of antibacterials to generate resistance. Target enzyme inhibition was determined by exposure to antibacterials and DNA; topoisomers were visualized by ge

Urinary tract infections are typical bacterial infections which result in a number of economic burdens. With increasing antibiotic resistance, it is urgent that new approaches are explored that can eliminate pathogenic bacteria without inducing drug resistance. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new promising tactic. It is a gentle in situ photochemical reaction in which a photosensitizer (PS) generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) under laser irradiation. In this work, we have demonstrated Chlorin e6 (Ce6) encapsulated charge-conversion polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) for efficientl

The snail Biomphalaria glabrata (Gastropoda, Mollusca) is an important intermediate host for the human parasite Schistosoma mansoni (Digenea, Trematoda). Anti-pathogen responses of B. glabrata were studied towards a better understanding of snail immunity and host-parasite compatibility. Open reading frame ESTs (ORESTES) were sampled from different transcriptomes of M line strain B. glabrata, 12h post-challenge with Escherichia coli (Gram-negative), Micrococcus luteus (Gram-positive) bacteria or compatible S. mansoni, and controls. The resulting 3123 ORESTES represented 2129 unique sequences (3

METHODS: Most of the bacterial isolates were identified using automated BD Phoenix, and a few with K-B method carried out manually. Candida isolates were identified by color-display plate and K-B method.
RESULTS: The most common isolates in the 2478 strains were P. aeruginosa (15.6%), E. coli (11.5%), C. albicans (9.6%), K. pneumoniae (9.3%), S. aureu (8.2%), and S. epidermidis (7.5%). In gram-negative isolates, the antibiotics with the lowest resistance rate were meraopenem (1

The escalating global crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a severe threat to public health, with bacterial biofilms and virulence factors exacerbating treatment failures in drug-resistant pathogens. Quorum sensing (QS), a density-dependent communication system, orchestrates biofilm formation, virulence expression, and resistance mechanisms in clinically relevant bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and other pathogenic bacteria. Unlike conventional antibiotics, which exert selective pressure that can lead to resistance, QS inhibition offers a promising
