BACKGROUND: Breast discharge and breast abscesses are common clinical presentations with heterogeneous etiologies. When infection is suspected, culture with antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is essential to guide targeted therapy, particularly in settings where antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic misuse may influence empirical choices. We aimed to characterize the microbiologic spectrum and cumulative susceptibility patterns of breast-associated secretion and drainage specimens submitted for culture in a private central microbiology laboratory in Damascus, Syria, and to assess ann

Extracts from two native species, Cinnamomum tamala (C. tamala) and Ocimum sanctum (O. sanctum), were analyzed for their antioxidant and antibacterial abilities. The radical scavenging activities of the C. tamala and O. sanctum extracts were noted to be more pronounced in a 50-50% water-ethanol mixture than in pure water. The total phenolic content increased from 38.83 to 124.42 mg of gallic acid equivalent per gram of dry material for C. tamala, and from 62.91 to 145.52 mg for O. sanctum when comparing pure water to the water-ethanol blend. The water-ethanolic extract of C. tamala demonstrate

This study evaluated the phytochemical composition, antimicrobial activity, and in vivo protective effects of the hydroethanolic extract from Commiphora leptophloeos stem bark (HECL) against 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced intestinal mucositis. Despite the extensive traditional use of C. leptophloeos in gastrointestinal disorders, its stem bark extract has not yet been chemically characterized nor systematically investigated in experimental models of chemotherapy-induced intestinal injury. Phytochemical analysis by mass spectrometry identified 21 metabolites, mainly procyanidins and flavonoids.

Owing to the richness of bioactive compounds, Olea europea leaf extracts exhibit a range of health effects. The present research evaluated the antibacterial and antiviral effect of leaf extracts obtained from Olea europea L. var. sativa (OESA) and Olea europea var. sylvestris (OESY) from Tunisia. LC-DAD-ESI-MS analysis allowed the identification of different compounds that contributed to the observed biological properties. Both OESA and OESY were active against Gram-positive bacteria (MIC values between 7.81 and 15.61 μg/mL and between 15.61 and 31.25 μg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6

The pulpal reaction associated with a composite resin alone and composite resin used in conjunction with two dentine bonding agents was studied. Class V cavities were prepared on the labial surfaces of the canine teeth of 18 male ferrets. After acid etching of the enamel margins, the cavities were restored with either a composite resin alone or in combination with one of two dentine bonding agents, Scotchbond and Gluma. One cavity in each animal was filled with Kalzinol as a control. The animals were killed after 7, 14 and 28 days. After histological processing, the pulpal changes were assesse

Considerable literature exists regarding the evaluation and treatment of children with urinary tract infection yet little has been reported solely about boys. We reviewed retrospectively 83 boys who were seen after an initial urinary tract infection. Fever was the most common presenting sign (50 per cent) and the most common organisms encountered were of the gram-positive group of bacteria. Escherichia coli accounted for only 21 per cent of the infections. Of the boys 75 per cent (62 patients) had an anatomic abnormality, most commonly vesicoureteral reflux, although more than 25 per cent of o

Antibiotics are considered "wonder drugs" due to the fact that they are the most extensively utilised medication in the world. They are used to cure a broad spectrum of diseases and lethal infections. A variety of bacteria and fungi produce antibiotics as a result of secondary metabolism; however, their production is dominated by a special class of bacteria, namely Actinobacteria. Actinobacteria are gram-positive bacteria with high G+C content and unparalleled antibiotic-producing ability. They produce numerous polyenes, tetracyclines, β-lactams, macrolides, and peptides. Actinobacteria are ub

UNLABELLED: Antimicrobial resistance is rapidly increasing worldwide, highlighting the urgent need for pharmaceutical and nonpharmaceutical interventions to tackle different-to-treat bacterial infections. Tigecycline, a semi-synthesis glycylcycline for parenteral administration, is widely recognized as one of the few effective therapies available against pan-drug resistant Gram-negative pathogens. Regrettably, the efficacy of multiple drugs, including tigecycline, is currently being undermined due to the emergence of a recently discovered mobilized resistance-nodulation-division-type efflux pu

BACKGROUND: Colistin (polymyxin E) is an effective antibiotic for the treatment of most multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. However, some bacteria, including bacterial spp. belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family, have an acquired resistance against polymyxins, which is attributed to they possess plasmid-carried resistance genes (mcr-1 and its variants). So, there is an urgent need to develop new therapeutic strategies to target broad spectrum resistant spp. from Enterobacteriaceae family in response to the loss of the protective barrier of last-line antibiotics. Here, we report the

Diskitis, an inflammation of the intervertebral disk, is generally attributable to Staphylococcus aureus and rarely Staphylococcus epidermidis, Kingella kingae, Enterobacteriaciae, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. In many cases, no bacterial growth is obtained from infected intervertebral discs. Although anaerobic bacteria were recovered from adults with spondylodiscitis, these organisms were not reported before from children. The recovery of anaerobic bacteria in 2 children with diskitis is reported. Patient 1. A 10-year-old male presented with 6 weeks of low back pain and 2 weeks of low-grade f

INTRODUCTION: Conducting a dry-off period during the late lactation phase in dairy cows can reduce the incidence of clinical mastitis both during the dry period and after subsequent calving. The primary dry-off methods include the application of antibiotics alone or in combination with internal teat sealants. A thorough understanding of the mammary gland microbiota composition before and after dry-off is essential for developing scientifically sound dry-off protocols in practical dairy production.
METHODS: Five Holstein cows approaching dry-off were selected for this study. The day of calving

Molecular methods in clinical and research applications frequently encounter complex mixtures of human and microbial DNA, sometimes alongside environmental or reagent contaminants. In metagenomic studies, the presence of host contamination poses a significant challenge, reducing the assay sensitivity of microbial detection and characterization. Different host-depletion and microbial enrichment platforms have been developed to reduce or eliminate host DNA in samples predominantly composed of human DNA. To establish an effective method to assess the efficacy of host DNA depletion or microbial en

BACKGROUND: Abnormal serum potassium levels are common among peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Many studies have shown hypokalemia as a risk factor for peritonitis, but most were cross-sectional and observational. We intended to analyze the longitudinal association between serum potassium levels and peritonitis in those undergoing PD. METHODS: We included 1,288 patients undergoing regular PD at our institution. The endpoint event was peritonitis. Patients were divided into peritonitis and non-peritonitis groups. The relationship between baseline data and the emergence of peritonitis was analy

Background: Antimicrobial resistance is at alarming levels. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a clinical concern and has been classified as one of the so-called ESKAPE pathogens. The increase in resistance coupled with the lack of new agents in development requires innovative ways of developing new antimicrobials. Methods: Here, we investigate an approved drug (Zafirlukast), which has been previously reported to have activity against Mycobacterium, for activities against other bacterial strains. Antibacterial activity was assessed using standard MIC testing along with checkerboard

BACKGROUND: Enterococcus faecalis is a common gut commensal Gram-positive bacterium that can act as an opportunistic pathogen and is frequently associated with severe infections community-acquired and nosocomial. Bacteria-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) emerge as key mediators of host-bacteria communication with immunomodulatory roles and mechanistic participation in pathophysiological processes. However, the impact of E. faecalis-derived EVs (Ef-EVs) on host cells and their potential role in shaping host responses during infection remain unclear.
METHODS: Ef-EVs from the E. faecalis DSM
