Morphologic differences of occipital region in patients with schizophrenia and migraine headache using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs).

Aim To compare morphologic variations of occipital sulci patterns in patients with schizophrenia and migraine headache regarding gender and … The consistency of the findings reveals distinct multiple brain regions, which show changes in the gray matter of patients with chronic forms of schizophrenia. The neurocognitive deficits of schizophrenia show highly consistent cross-sectional relationships to each type of functional outcome.

Common and differential brain abnormalities in gambling disorder subtypes based on risk attitude.

Studying brain abnormalities in behavioral addiction including GD enables us to exclude possible confounding effects of exposure to neurotox … nto two groups based on their level of loss aversion, low and high. While both groups showed common gray matter volume reduction in the left supramarginal gyrus and bilateral posterior cerebellum, high loss-aversion GD showed pronounced reduction in the left posterior cerebellum and additional reduction in the bilateral medial orbitofrontal cortex. Our study …

Spatial Embedding and Wiring Cost Constrain the Functional Layout of the Cortical Network of Rodents and Primates.

Mammals show a wide range of brain sizes, reflecting adaptation to diverse habitats. Comparing interareal cortical networks across brains of … ch as Alzheimer disease and schizophrenia. Finally, our data from tracer experiments involving only gray matter connections in the primary visual areas of both species show that an EDR holds at local scales as well (within 1.5 mm), supporting the hypothesis that it is a universally valid property across all scales and, possibly, across the mammalian class.

Expanding the phenotype of RTTN variations: a new family with primary microcephaly, severe growth failure, brain malformations and dermatitis.

Primary autosomal recessive microcephaly (MCPH) is a developmental disorder characterized by prenatal onset of abnormal brain growth. MCPH occurs both alone and as part of a broad range of neurodevelopmental syndromes with or without cortical malformations and growth retardation. Here we report a consanguineous Moroccan family with two siblings affected by severe primary microcephaly, failure to thrive, congenital dermatitis and severe developmental delay. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed lissencephaly of frontal lobes and periventricular heterotopia of the gray matter. We performed bot…

Changes in functional connectivity of pain modulatory systems in women with primary dysmenorrhea.

Menstrual pain is the most prevalent gynecological complaint, and is usually without organic cause (termed primary dysmenorrhea, PDM). The high comorbidity in the later life of PDM with many functional pain disorders (associated with central dysfunction of pain inhibition, eg, fibromyalgia) suggests possible maladaptive functionality of pain modulatory systems already occurred in young PDM women, making them vulnerable to functional pain disorders. Periaqueductal gray (PAG) matter functions as a critical hub in the neuraxis of pain modulatory systems; therefore, we investigated the functional

Cerebral blood volume measurement using near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy and histopathological evaluation after hypoxic-ischemic insult in newborn piglets.

The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the cerebral blood volume (CBV) measured by near-infrared time-resolved spectro … resuscitation. Spearman's rank-correlation coefficients at 1, 3, and 6h after resuscitation in the gray matter were 0.9016, 0.9127, and 0.6907, respectively. We conclude that an increased CBV after HI insult indicates more marked histological brain damage. CBV measurement immediately after resuscitation provides a more precise prediction of the histological …

Functional imaging of structures involved in neural control of the lower urinary tract.

Recent functional brain imaging studies, building on earlier observations, suggest a working model of brain control of the lower urinary tract. It comprises a few cerebral neural circuits that, during the storage phase, act on the midbrain periaqueductal gray to inhibit the long-loop, spinobulbospinal voiding reflex, thus promoting continence. Circuit 1, centered on the medial prefrontal cortex, appears to be concerned with conscious control of both continence and voiding. Circuit 2, centered on the dorsal anterior cingulate (midcingulate) and supplementary motor area, is concerned with emotio

γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentration inversely correlates with basal perfusion in human occipital lobe.

Commonly used neuroimaging approaches in humans exploit hemodynamic or metabolic indicators of brain function. However, fundamental gaps remain in our ability to relate such hemo-metabolic reactivity to neurotransmission, with recent reports providing paradoxical information regarding the relationship among basal perfusion, functional imaging contrast, and neurotransmission in awake humans. Here, sequential magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) measurements of the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA+macromolecules normalized by the complex N-acetyl aspartate-N-acetyl

Morphological changes in the brain of acutely ill and weight-recovered patients with anorexia nervosa. A meta-analysis and qualitative review.

OBJECTIVE: Acute anorexia nervosa (AN) leads to reduced gray (GM) and white matter (WM) volume in the brain, which however improves again upon restoration of weight. Yet little is known about the extent and clinical correlates of these brain changes, nor do we know much about the time-course and completeness of their recovery. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis and a qualitative review of all magnetic resonance imaging studies involving volume analyses of the brain in both acute and recovered AN. RESULTS: We identified structural neuroimaging studies with a total of 214 acute AN patients

Better baseline performance on a rapid naming measure was associated with volume decrease in the left inferior frontal region. These results suggest that child …

Impaired response inhibition and excess cortical thickness as candidate endophenotypes for trichotillomania.

Trichotillomania is characterized by repetitive pulling out of one's own hair. Impaired response inhibition has been identified in patients with trichotillomania, along with gray matter density changes in distributed neural regions including frontal cortex. The objective of this study was to evaluate impaired response inhibition and abnormal cortical morphology as candidate endophenotypes for the disorder. Subjects with trichotillomania (N = 12), unaffected first-degree relatives of these patients (N = 10), and healthy controls (N = 14), completed the Stop Signal Task (SST), a measure of respo…

Evidence of a suffocation alarm system sensitive to clinically-effective treatments with the panicolytics clonazepam and fluoxetine.

Patients also show baseline res … ehaviors are blocked both by denervation of chemoreceptor cells and lesion of dorsal periaqueductal gray matter, a likely substrate of panic. Reversible and irreversible cranial MRI findings associated with status epilepticus.

OBJECTIVE: There is limited information on neuroimaging changes in status epilepticus (SE). The objective of this study was to characterize the abnormalities associated with SE in cranial MRI of patients with SE. METHODS: A retrospective review of our records from 2001 to 2010 identified 203 patients with SE. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) changes considered were not attributable to any neurological disorder. RESULTS: Ten patients who met the inclusion criteria were found to have significant abnormalities. Magnetic resonance imaging findings included increased T2 signal changes in the gray

A novel mouse model of ischemic carotid artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Carotid artery occlusive disease gradually develops over time, eventually leading to cerebral infarction and high mortality rate. Animal models replicating cerebral infarction resulting from carotid artery occlusive disease have thus been developed to test potential novel treatments, which could be subsequently administered clinically. METHODS: Adult C57BL/6J male mice were subjected to ameroid constrictor (AC) placement to gradually narrow the bilateral common carotid arteries. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured at several time points. At 7 and 28 days post-operation, post-mo
