Quality of neonatal health care in comprehensive specialized hospitals, Amhara Region, Ethiopia: a retrospective study with neonatal death audit.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal health is one of the targets for the sustainable development goals (SDGs) that aim to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1 000 live births in 2030. However, the world is not on track to achieve this target. The problem has worsened in many low-income countries, including Ethiopia, due to a fragile health system, as well as health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, conflict, food insecurity and climate change. According to the Mini Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey, neonatal mortality is unacceptably high in Ethiopia in general, and in Amhara region

Health-system challenges, resilience strategies, and actionable priorities for non-communicable disease care in humanitarian crises: A scoping review.

Humanitarian crises disrupt the continuous care required for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), yet evidence on effective health-system responses remains fragmented. We conducted a scoping review, reported in accordance with PRISMA-ScR, to map health-system challenges, implemented and recommended strategies, resilience functions, and evidence gaps for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases in humanitarian settings. PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, relevant organizational websites, and reference lists were searched. English-language empirical studies,

Feasibility and acceptability of pooled sputum testing for tuberculosis: a multicountry qualitative study of the Start4All project.

OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis (TB) remains underdiagnosed in many high-burden countries due to high costs and limited availability of rapid molecular tests. Globally, only half of people with TB receive a molecular test as their initial diagnostic test. Pooled testing combines sputum samples from multiple individuals into a single molecular assay, offering cost savings by optimising existing resources, particularly in resource-constrained health systems. Although pooled sputum testing has now been recommended by the World Health Organization in 2026, evidence on real-world feasibility and acceptabi

Enhancing Permanency in Children and Families (EPIC): a child welfare intervention for parental substance abuse.

BACKGROUND: Across Ohio, parental substance abuse has contributed to a marked increase in the number of children in foster care. Children exposed to parental substance use have a higher likelihood of physical abuse and neglect, and consequently a variety of physical, psychological and cognitive problems. The Enhancing Permanency in Children and Families (EPIC) program is a collaborative effort between the Ohio State University College of Social Work, two county offices of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, two juvenile courts and local behavioral health agencies. The goal of EPIC

Psychology's Contributions to Anti-Blackness in the United States Within Psychological Research, Criminal Justice, and Mental Health.

The mass incarceration of Black people in the United States is gaining attention as a public-health crisis with extreme mental-health implications. Although it is well documented that historical efforts to oppress and control Black people in the United States helped shape definitions of mental illness and crime, many psychologists are unaware of the ways the field has contributed to the conception and perpetuation of anti-Blackness and, consequently, the mass incarceration of Black people. In this article, we draw from existing theory and empirical evidence to demonstrate historical and contem

'I was broken in so many different ways': The intersection of complex factors impacting homeless and at-risk African American women's mental health and well-being.

African American women are at higher risk of poor mental ill health compared with other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. For low-income and homeless African American populations, the risk of poor mental ill health is even higher. The purpose of our study was to learn what programmes at a long-term transitional living centre helped at-risk and homeless African American mothers to succeed on their own, in accordance with self-identified goals. We conducted ten focus group interviews with 39 graduates of a long-term transitional living centre located in a Midwestern city, and an ind

Live Births and Fertility Amid the Zika Epidemic in Brazil.

In late 2015, the Brazilian Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organization classified the increase in congenital malformations associated with the Zika virus (ZIKV) as a public health emergency. The risk of ZIKV-related congenital syndrome poses a threat to reproductive outcomes that could result in declining numbers of live births and potentially fertility. Using monthly microdata on live births from the Brazilian Information System on Live Births (SINASC), this study examines live births and fertility trends amid the ZIKV epidemic in Brazil. Findings suggest a decline in live bi

Comparative Review of Antimicrobial Resistance in Humans and Nonhuman Primates.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) presents serious threats to human and animal health. Although AMR of pathogens is often evaluated independently between humans and animals, comparative analysis of AMR between humans and animals is necessary for zoonotic pathogens. Major surveillance systems monitor AMR of zoonotic pathogens in humans and food animals, but comprehensive AMR data in veterinary medicine is not diligently monitored for most animal species with which humans commonly contact, including NHP. The objective of this review is to provide a complete report of the prevalences of AMR among zo

Overview of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and alcohol misuse among active duty service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, self-report and diagnosis.

Previous studies have found deployment to combat areas to be associated with an increased risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and alcohol abuse, but many previous studies were limited by samples that were not representative of the deployed military as a whole. This study presents an overview of these three mental health problems associated with deployment among Air Force, Army, Marine Corp, and Navy service members returning from deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan between January 2007 and March 2008. With postdeployment health data on over 50,000 service men and women, i

Absence from work and the medical sickness certificate.

Internet and dematerialization have greatly facilitated the medical profession. Contractual physicians and national health service doctors now have efficient tools for the electronic management of their routine administrative workload. A recent innovation is the medical sickness certificate issued by primary care providers and national health service physicians. Following postponements and uncertainties, procedures for the electronic completion and online transmission of the sickness certificate are now complete. The changes introduced by the so-called "Brunetta decree", however, have made its

Comprehensive geriatric assessment in elderly breast cancer patients.

Treatment of elderly patients with breast cancer is limited by the lack of evidence-based medicine due to exclusion of elderly persons from clinical studies and the difficulty of decision-making in an elderly population comprising subjects with heterogeneous health backgrounds. Individual variation of health conditions is larger in elderly patients than in young people. Since the risk-benefit balance of treatment depends on the health background, judgment of the vulnerability of individual patients is required in treatment planning. The comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is a tool for ac

Cannabis-Related Problems, Adverse Events, Clinical Experiences and Barriers to Intervening: Perspectives of Health Care Providers in Washington State.

BACKGROUND: Patients presenting with cannabis-related adverse events (AEs) and other problems are becoming increasingly prevalent in health care settings across the U.S. and Canada, increasing the burden on providers and health systems. Understanding how healthcare providers perceive and respond to cannabis AEs can inform medical training and clinical practices, health policy, and systems-level interventions. METHODS: The study was conducted in Washington State, a U.S. state that legalized cannabis for non-medical use in 2012. Health care providers were invited to complete an anonymous online
