[Micronuclei in mucose cells and colonization of human stomach epithelium with coccoid forms of Helicobacter pylori].

International Agency for Research on Cancer recognized as sufficient the evidence of Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection carcinogenicity and placed it into the 1 st group of carcinogens. Micronucleus level in gastric epithelial cells of antral stomach region of patients with chronic non-atrophy gastritis (n = 62) was studied. 40 patients of 62 had HP-associated gastritis. The HP-bacterium exists in a spiral and coccoid form. Both morphological forms were examined using immunocytochemistry. Significantly increased micronucleus number was observed in the cells of HP-infected patients compared wit

Treatment of Helicobacter pylori in patients with lymphocytic gastritis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Lymphocytic gastritis is a subtype of chronic gastritis characterized by a marked increase in the number of intraepithelial lymphocytes in the gastric mucosa. Its etiology is unknown, but a proportion of these patients have Helicobacter pylori infection. The aim was to assess the significance of H. pylori treatment in lymphocytic gastritis patients. METHODOLOGY: The 10 patients with lymphocytic gastritis and either serologically or histologically diagnosed H. pylori infection were treated with a triple therapy and followed by serology and histology after 6-18 months. RESULTS

Increased occurrence of Treponema spp. and double-species infections in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Although the link between microbial infections and Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been demonstrated in multiple studies, the involvement of pathogens in the development of AD remains unclear. Here, we investigated the frequency of the 10 most commonly cited viral (HSV-1, EBV, HHV-6, HHV-7, and CMV) and bacterial (Chlamydia pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori, Borrelia burgdorferi, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Treponema spp.) pathogens in serum, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain tissues of AD patients. We have used an in-house multiplex PCR kit for simultaneous detection of five bacterial and five

Role of bacterial infections in pancreatic cancer.

Established risk factors for pancreatic cancer, including tobacco smoking, chronic pancreatitis, obesity and type 2 diabetes, collectively account for less than half of all pancreatic cancer cases. Inflammation plays a key role in pancreatic carcinogenesis, but it is unclear what causes local inflammation, other than pancreatitis. Epidemiological data suggest that Helicobacter pylori may be a risk factor for pancreatic cancer, and more recently, data suggest that periodontal disease, and Porphyromonas gingivalis, a pathogen for periodontal disease, may also play a role in pancreatic carcinogen

Helicobacter pylori therapy: Present and future.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of chronic active gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue-lymphoma, and is also involved in carcinogenesis of the stomach. H. pylori treatment still remains a challenge for physicians, since no current first-line therapy is able to cure the infection in all treated patients. Several factors may help in the eradication of therapy failure. We reviewed both bacterial and host factors involved in therapeutic management of the H. pylori infection. In addition, we evaluated data on the most success

H. pylori eradication does not reduce paraprotein levels in monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS): a prospective cohort study.

Monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS) is a chronic haematological alteration that carries a 1% risk per year of malignant evolution. The origin of this disturbance remains unknown. Previous reports have suggested that a subgroup of patients presenting MGUS might cure after Helicobacter pylori eradication. This study evaluates the effect of H. pylori eradication in a cohort of 30 patients with MGUS. A 7-day clarithromycin-based triple treatment was prescribed to patients with MGUS infected with H. pylori. Quantification of the monoclonal component was performed at inclusion and a

[Noninvasive diagnosis of chronic atrophic gastritis by serology].

The authors describe a current approach to the laboratory diagnosis of chronic gastritis, by using the plates of serological tests: pepsinogen I (PG-I), gastrin 17, and antibodies to Helicobacter pylori (HP). These tests and a questionnaire were used to examine 168 persons aged 45-70 years, who were a random population sample. Almost a fourth of the adult population was observed to have pronounced gastric mucosal atrophic changes, which might be associated with the high prevalence of HP infection. The concentration of PG-I is high in the persons infected with HP, its cytotoxic strains in parti

Interleukin-1β and Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist gene polymorphism in pediatric patients with Helicobacter pylori-associated chronic gastritis.

BACKGROUND: The severity of Helicobacter pylori infection is determined by the interplay between bacterial virulence, host genetic and environmental factors. This study aimed to identify interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and interleukin receptor antagonist (IL-1RN) gene polymorphisms and their associations with H. pylori infection, and severity of chronic gastritis in Egyptian children. METHODS: A case control study was conducted on 100 children (50 H. pylori positive and 50 controls). Genotyping of IL-1β-31 gene was done by PCR-CTPP (confronting two-pair primers), of IL-1β-511 was performed using a

Two Cases of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphomas in the Cervical Lymph Nodes in Patients with Low-Grade Gastric Marginal Zone B-Cell Lymphoma (MALT Lymphoma).

It is well known that gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas are associated with Helicobacter pylori infection and have a good prognosis. However, although rare, these low-grade lymphomas transform to the high-grade diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCLs) which are thought to be the important cause of death in patients with MALT lymphoma. We report two cases of DLBCLs in the cervical lymph nodes that occurred 10 years and 1.5 years after diagnosing low-grade gastric MALT lymphomas.

Conditions and drugs interfering with thyroxine absorption.

Food, dietary fibre and espresso coffee interfere with the absorption of levothyroxine. Malabsorptive disorders reported to affect the absorption of levothyroxine include coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, lactose intolerance as well as Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and atrophic gastritis. Many commonly used drugs, such as bile acid sequestrants, ferrous sulphate, sucralfate, calcium carbonate, aluminium-containing antacids, phosphate binders, raloxifene and proton-pump inhibitors, have also been shown to interfere with the absorption of levothyroxine.

Pathogenicity island-dependent effects of Helicobacter pylori on intracellular signal transduction in epithelial cells.

Helicobacter pylori is a microbial pathogen that colonises the stomach of more than half of the world's human population. H. pylori infection can induce chronic gastritis, peptic ulceration and more rarely, gastric adenocarcinoma. A prominent feature of H. pylori is the presence of a pathogenicity island (PAI) which encodes a type IV secretion system (T4SS). This review focuses on the processes of how H. pylori induces PAI-dependent epithelial cell signalling that might be of importance in gastric inflammation and the pathogenesis of neoplasia.

[Anti-Helicobacter therapy for duodenal peptic ulcer complicated by pyloroduodenal stenosis].

The rate of persistence of and susceptibility of Helicobacter pylori (HP) to antibacterial drugs (ABDs) and the results of eradication therapy were studied in patients with duodenal peptic ulcer complicated by pyloroduodenal stenosis (PDS). The patients with PDS exhibited a high (97.1%) rate of anthral mucosal infection with HP showing a high resistance to ABDs. The efficiency of eradication therapy performed with the susceptibility of HP to ABDs kept in mind was 92.5%. The use of eradication therapy in the complex preoperative preparation of patients with ulcerative PDS increases the latter.

AWaRe-aligned doxycycline-based bismuth quadruple therapy achieves high Helicobacter pylori eradication rates and supports antimicrobial stewardship.

OBJECTIVE: Helicobacter pylori infects a large proportion of the global population. The World Health Organization (WHO) developed the Access, Watch and Reserve (AWaRe) classification to promote rational antibiotic use and reduce antimicrobial resistance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a doxycycline-based bismuth quadruple therapy aligned with this strategy, as a potential alternative for Helicobacter pylori eradication in settings with limited availability of tetracycline. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted (October 2023-October 2024)

Helicobacter pylori cagA and vacA genes in dyspeptic Ghanaian patients.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection is prevalent in Ghana. The development of gastro-duodenal disease is dependent on virulence of the infecting strain, host susceptibility and environmental factors. Helicobacter pylori cagA and vacA strains induce more inflammation, ulceration and oncogenesis. Here, for the first time we present data on H. pylori cagA and vacA genes and their association with gastro-duodenal disease in Ghana. A total of 159 patients with dyspepsia at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, were investigated for H. pylori with urease-CLO, of which 113 (71.1%) were positive. G
