The emergence of new viral infections has increased over the decades. The novel virus is one such pathogen liable for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, popularly known as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Most fatalities during the past century's influenza pandemics have cooperated with bacterial co/secondary infections. Unfortunately, many reports have claimed that bacterial co-infection is also predominant in COVID-19 patients (COVID-19 associated co/secondary infection prevalence is up to 45.0%). In the COVID-19 pandemic, Streptococcus pneumoniae is

The Lake Van fish (Alburnus tarichi) is a species that is endemic to Turkey's Lake Van basin. In this study, the regional distribution, volume density, and relative frequency of some pancreatic endocrine cells in Lake Van fish were investigated via immunohistochemistry using specific mammalian antibodies. The pancreatic tissue was observed to be surrounded by adipose tissue, which was adjacent to the gall bladder or extrahepatic bile duct, or dispersed in the adipose tissue ranked among coils of post-esophageal swelling and intestine. The pancreatic endocrine cells were examined, including the

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium is a leading contributor to diarrheal morbidity and mortality in under-5 children worldwide. As there is no vaccine and no effective drug therapy in young children for this infection, preventing infection is critical. We undertook a pilot case-control study to define the extent of person-to-person transmission of cryptosporidiosis within an urban and a rural community in Bangladesh.
METHODS: We enrolled 48 case families with a Cryptosporidium-infected child aged 6-18 months. Controls were age- and sex-matched Cryptosporidium-negative children in 12 households. Chil

OBJECTIVES: Immune checkpoints inhibitors (ICI) represent a new therapy option for the treatment of several advanced tumors. However, this therapy has been linked to a spectrum of ICI related autoimmune (AI) adverse events. Some may be life threatening and their diagnosis is tricky. The aim of our study was to describe various imaging appearances of ICI related secondary hypophysitis and other coincidental AI diseases.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included 28 patients (19 females, 9 men, mean aged 58±13 years), who were consecutively treated mostly for advanced stage melanoma by different ICI. Al

Immunomodulation uses synthetic, natural and recombinant preparations to modify the immune response to a desired level, typically to treat specific autoimmune diseases, as will be discussed in this section. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common systemic autoimmune disease, affecting 1% of the population worldwide. Currently, a first-line disease-modifying therapy for RA is methotrexate; however, more than 40 monoclonal antibodies are in use or under investigation for the treatment of RA. This panoply of biological disease-modifying agents means that clinicians can make use of drugs with differ

Memory T cells are critical for immunity to various intracellular pathogens. Recent studies have indicated that CD8 secondary memory cells, induced by prime-boost approaches, show enhanced protective function compared with primary memory cells and exhibit phenotypic and functional characteristics that distinguish them from primary memory cells. However, little is known about the cytokine requirements for generation and maintenance of boosted memory CD8 T cells. We studied the role of IL-15 in determining the size and composition of the secondary (2 degrees) memory CD8 T cell pool induced by Li

INTRODUCTION: Endometrial receptivity is essential for implantation in both natural and ART cycles, yet the cellular and molecular environment of the endometrium during this window remains poorly characterized. While cytokines affecting implantation have been studied, data on immune cell subtypes in the endometrium are limited. The objective of this study was to determine the association between endometrial immune cell profile at the time of transfer and live birth in patients undergoing frozen embryo transfer (FET) using the index cycle.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is an apicomplexan parasite which infects nearly all warm-blooded animals and humans, causing zoonotic toxoplasmosis. Pork infected with T. gondii is considered a significant source of human infection. Currently, no commercial vaccines are available for porcine toxoplasmosis globally, thus a safe and effective vaccine is urgently needed. This study evaluated the immuno-protective effects of two T. gondii gene knockout attenuated strains, RHΔtkl1 and PruΔpp2a-c, in pigs.
METHODS: Pigs immunized by intramuscular injection with 1 × 107 tachyzoites of attenuated RHΔt

Immunological adaptions during pregnancy play a crucial role in healthy fetal development. Aberrant immune modifications however contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes, which may be driven by maternal factors such as previous pregnancies and BMI. This secondary analysis of the MicrobeMom2 RCT investigates the changes to maternal inflammatory biomarkers derived from serum and stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) during pregnancy, and the effects of previous pregnancies (parity) and BMI on maternal immune responses. Changes in immune and metabolic biomarkers from early (11-15

Targeting DNA repair defects has shown therapeutic benefits in solid tumors with genetic mutations that disrupt DNA damage repair (DDR) pathways. Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) demonstrates an intermediate level of genomic instability, while it rarely carries mutations in these genes. Instead, it is characterized by the loss of chromosome 3p, the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor gene inactivation, and secondary mutations in Polybromo-1 (PBRM1), SET domain-containing 2 (SETD2), and BRCA-associated protein 1 (BAP1). Here, we summarize and discuss how these essential mutations im

Leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) is a rare, immune-mediated small-vessel vasculitis that can be triggered by infections, autoimmune diseases, or medications, including biologic therapies. We present a case of a patient with Crohn's disease who developed biopsy proven LCV during longterm infliximab therapy. After four years of sustained remission on infliximab, she developed cutaneous palpable purpura affecting the lower extremities. Laboratory evaluation excluded systemic vasculitis, infection, and other secondary causes. Histopathology confirmed leukocytoclastic vasculitis. Discontinuation o

Lymphedema is a chronic, progressive condition characterized by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid, followed by fat deposition and tissue fibrosis. It can also lead to local immune compromise and, in some cases, cutaneous malignancies. Here, we report a case of a patient with stage III combined perineal and lower limb lymphedema secondary to trauma. The patient was treated with lymphaticovenous anastomoses in the suprapubic region and both lower limbs, along with excision of excess skin and tissue in the perineal area. Optimal clinical improvement was achieved through this staged approach. Th

Efferocytosis, the phagocytic removal of dead cells by microglia and macrophages, was recently recognized as a critical process in the resolution of inflammation and tissue repair following ischemic stroke. In this review, we examine the pathways involved in efferocytosis after stroke, including the recognition and engulfment of apoptotic cells and the modulation of inflammatory responses. We elaborate on the pathways regulating efferocytosis and discuss how dysregulated efferocytosis can contribute to secondary injury and neurological deficits. Furthermore, we explore valuable mechanisms glea

Tissue-resident memory T (TRM) cells are populations which settle down in non-lymphoid tissues instead of returning to secondary lymph organs after the antigen presentation. These cells can provide rapid on-site immune protection as well as long-term tissue damage. It is reported that TRM cells from small intestine and colon exhibited distinctive patterns of cytokine and granzyme expression along with substantial transcriptional and functional heterogeneity. In this review, we focus on the reason why they lodge in intestinal tract, their developmental plasticity of going back to to circulation

Aplastic anemia (AA) is a non-neoplastic bone marrow failure syndrome caused by the destruction of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells by the immune system. However, in some cases of AA, a small number of specific clones with gene mutations are observed without clinical manifestations. Cases with mutated PIG-A, BCOR/BCORL1, or HLA class I allele clones respond better to immunosuppressive therapies (ISTs). Cases with MDS-related clones, such as DNMT3A or ASXL1 mutations, are at a higher risk for secondary MDS. In this review, I will focus on the clonal hematopoiesis (CH) in AA and discuss i

The 2020-21 West Nile Virus (WNV) outbreak in Andalusia, Spain, was the largest reported in the country, with eight cases of West Nile Neuroinvasive Disease (WNND) diagnosed in a tertiary hospital. Diagnosis of WNND is based on detecting WNV RNA, viral isolation, or demonstrating a specific immune response against the virus, with additional tests used to support the diagnosis. Treatment remains supportive, with variable outcomes. The potential efficacy of plasma exchange (PLEX) in select cases raises the possibility of an autoimmune component secondary to infectious pathology of the central ne

Psoriasis is a lifelong chronic hyperproliferative inflammatory immune-mediated disorder. There is a strong association of psoriasis exacerbation with infection of Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species. In the case of our patient, a psoriatic flare manifesting as dactylitis occurred secondary to methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia colonization of his pacemaker. If a patient is started on an antibiotic regimen, such as vancomycin, and has symptoms of rash, and swelling in the fingers, it is imperative to ask for a proper rheumatologic history, as vancomycin infusion reacti

A man in his 20s presented with a 2-week history of fever, fatigue and diarrhoea. On arrival to the emergency department, he had clinical findings of sepsis. The care team initially suspected sepsis secondary to bacterial colitis and administered antibiotics. Further workup including a stool PCR assay for gastrointestinal pathogens failed to establish a diagnosis, and he had no evidence of immune compromise. Colonoscopy revealed mucosal ulceration presumed to be ulcerative colitis. Histopathology obtained after discharge revealed severe colitis with cytomegalovirus (CMV) inclusions. Serologica

Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR T-cell) therapy is associated with significant toxicities secondary to immune activation, including a rare but increasingly recognised severe toxicity resembling haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (carHLH). We report the development of carHLH in 14·8% of paediatric patients and young adults treated with CD19-specific CAR T-cell therapy with carHLH, occurring most commonly in those with high disease burden. The diagnosis and treatment of carHLH required a high index of suspicion and included multidrug immunomodulation with variable response to therapies. C

The authors present the case of a patient who underwent the removal of a small bluish lesion of the cheek. After discharge, the patient presented with profuse bleeding and hematoma of the cheek. Blood tests revealed severe secondary immune thrombocytopenia (SITP). SITP was probably triggered by the anti-SARS-CoV-2 Pfizer vaccine, which was inoculated to the patient 3 days before the lesion appeared and 12 days before surgery. The authors' aim is to inform colleagues about this possible, rare, adverse effect of the vaccine. In all patients who have recently undergone the COVID-19 vaccine and wh
