Clinical features and outcomes of bacteremic and non-bacteremic Campylobacteriosis: a case-control study.

PURPOSE: Campylobacter bloodstream infection (C-BSI) is uncommon, and its clinical significance is unclear. The aim of the study was to determine risk factors and clinical outcomes associated with Campylobacter BSI. METHODS: We performed a single center retrospective case-control study comparing patients with C-BSI (cases) and patients with nonbacteremic Campylobacter enteritis (controls), from January 2007 through June 2020. Case and control patients were matched by age and sex at a ratio of 1:2. Demographic, clinical, and microbiological characteristics were compared between groups. RESULT

Infection prevention and chronic disease management in cystic fibrosis and noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung disease (CLD) characterized by irreversible bronchial dilatation noted on computed tomography associated with chronic cough, ongoing viscid sputum production, and recurrent pulmonary infections. Patients with bronchiectasis can be classified into two groups: those with cystic fibrosis and those without cystic fibrosis. Individuals with either cystic fibrosis related bronchiectasis (CFRB) or noncystic fibrosis related bronchiectasis (NCFRB) experience continuous airway inflammation and suffer airway architectural changes that foster the acquisition of a unique p

The importance of sampling technique and rinse water for assessing flexible gastrointestinal endoscope reprocessing: A 3-year study covering 59 centers.

BACKGROUND: Various guidelines recommend several sampling techniques to verify endoscope reprocessing, but a comparative study of the efficiency for recovering microorganisms was rare. Our goal was to compare different sampling techniques for the postreprocessing endoscope to assess residual bacterial contamination and analysis of the critical factors affecting the endoscope reprocessing failure. METHODS: From 2016 to 2018, 3 techniques, the conventional flushing sampling method, flush-brush-flush sampling method (FBFSM), and pump-assisted sampling method (PASM), were compared covering all 59

[Clinical features of mononucleosis because of Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus co-infection in adult patients].

Objective: To identify the clinical features of mononucleosis caused by co-infection of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) in adult patients. Methods: A total of 103 inpatients with mononucleosis in Peking University Third Hospital from May 2013 to May 2016 were collected as the study subjects. The patients were divided into three groups according to the responsible pathogens: 33 patients infected with EBV and CMV, 53 infected with EBV alone and 17 infected with CMV alone.Furthermore, a case-control study was employed to retrospectively compare the clinical characteristics and p

Efficacy of triclosan-coated sutures for reducing risk of surgical site infection in adults: a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infection (SSI) is the third most frequent type of nosocomial infections. Triclosan-coated sutures are often used to reduce the risk of SSI, but studies examining this have given conflicting results. Therefore, this meta-analysis was performed to assess the efficacy of triclosan-coated sutures for reducing risk of SSI in adults. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched to identify randomized clinical trials evaluating triclosan-coated sutures for preventing SSI on patients 18 y or older. RESULTS: Thirteen randomized clinical tria

European perspective on human polyomavirus infection, replication and disease in solid organ transplantation.

Human polyomaviruses (HPyVs) are a growing challenge in immunocompromised patients in view of the increasing number of now 12 HPyV species and their diverse disease potential. Currently, histological evidence of disease is available for BKPyV causing nephropathy and haemorrhagic cystitis, JCPyV causing progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and occasionally nephropathy, MCPyV causing Merkel cell carcinoma and TSPyV causing trichodysplasia spinulosa, the last two being proliferative skin diseases. Here, the current role of HPyV in solid organ transplantation (SOT) was reviewed and recommend

Pre-emptive treatment for cytomegalovirus viraemia to prevent cytomegalovirus disease in solid organ transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in solid organ transplant recipients. Pre-emptive treatment of patients with CMV viraemia using antiviral agents has been suggested as an alternative to routine prophylaxis to prevent CMV disease. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2005. OBJECTIVES: This review was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of pre-emptive treatment with antiviral medications in preventing symptomatic CMV disease. SEARCH METHODS: For this update, we searched the Cochrane Renal Group's Specialised Register (to 16

[Postoperative infectious-inflammatory complications of endoscopic surgery for urolithiasis].

Retrospective analysis of 1027 percutaneous radioendoscopic surgeries for upper urinary tract stones was performed. Postoperative acute pyelonephritis was the most common complication (11.2%), the frequency of which was significantly dependent on the presence of source of infection in the urinary tract, and the frequency of intra- and postoperative complications. When performing PPN, patients with urolithiasis and with the presence of the initial infection in the urinary tract, intra- and postoperative complications should be referred to the group of patients with a high risk of postoperative

Antimicrobial therapy for chronic bacterial prostatitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic bacterial prostatitis (CBP) is frequently diagnosed in men of fertile age, and is characterized by a disabling array of symptoms, including pain in the pelvic area (for example, perineum, testicles), voiding symptoms (increased frequency and urgency, also at night; pain or discomfort at micturition), and sexual dysfunction. Cure of CBP can be attempted by long-term therapy with antibacterial agents, but relapses are frequent. Few antibacterial agents are able to distribute to the prostatic tissue and achieve sufficient concentrations at the site of infection. These agents i

Invasive aspergillosis: drug-dispensing systems as a source of filamentous fungal contamination in high-risk units?

High-risk units with air-control measures at Grenoble University Hospital are equipped with automated dispensing systems that are filled daily using drug trolleys routed from the pharmacy to the ward. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of filamentous fungi (FF) contamination present in trolleys under usual conditions and after cleaning with Aniosurf(®) (fungicidal disinfectant). FF were detected in all samples, and 83.3% of samples were contaminated with Aspergillus fumigatus. Cleaning trolleys with Aniosurf(®) decreased the level of FF significantly, but contamination re-appeared

Clinical inquiries. Which vaccinations are indicated after splenectomy?

Immunization against encapsulated bacterial pathogens decreases the incidence of post-splenectomy sepsis. Pneumococcal, meningococcal, and Haemophilus influenzae (Hib) vaccinations are indicated for patients after splenectomy. These immunizations should be given at least 14 days before a scheduled splenectomy, or given after the fourteenth postoperative day (strength of recommendation [SOR]: A, based on systematic review of RCTs for the pneumococcal vaccine; SOR: B, based on systematic review of clinical trials for meningococcal and Hib vaccines).

Bacillus anthracis as an agent of bioterrorism: a review emphasizing surgical treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To familiarize surgeons with the specific complications of cutaneous, gastrointestinal, inhalation, and systemic infection with Bacillus Anthracis, which may require surgical treatment. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: The recent cases of intentional exposure to Bacillus Anthracis in the United States make familiarity with the basic microbiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and control of this disease essential if mortality and morbidity is to be minimized, particularly following mass exposure. Although the treatment of Bacillus Anthracis infection is primarily medical,

Management of an outbreak of Norwegian scabies.

An outbreak of Norwegian scabies in a 170-bed acute care hospital was controlled through an organized plan for delivering treatment to those affected: four patients, 50 staff members, and 14 family members of staff members. Health departments in two counties were notified and found four additional cases in the long-term care facility at which the index patient lived. Contact isolation was used for the index patient and any other patients with nosocomial scabies. Staff members infested with Sarcoptes scabiei were released from work until they had been treated with lindane. Staff members who had

Timeliness of notification in infectious disease cases.

Records of notification in cases of eight infectious diseases in the "Servei Territorial de Salut Publica" of the Province of Barcelona, Spain, between 1982 and 1986 were reviewed. Time from onset of symptoms to notification, time from notification to completion of data collection, and time from onset to completion of the case investigation were analyzed. For the period from onset to notification, the shortest mean was registered for meningococcal infection (6.31 days) and the longest was for pulmonary tuberculosis (54.79 days). For time from notification to complete investigation, the shortes

[Tourism and risk of infection (author's transl)].

Great streams of tourists flow every year from the Federal Republic to southern countries. The danger of infection with serious tropical diseases such as smallpox, cholera or leprosy is fairly small, statistically speaking. Even exotic parasitoses merit only individual medical interest in the majority of cases. Of greater importance are the cosmopolitan infectious diseases such as typhoid fever, paratyphoid, salmonella enteritis, poliomyelitis, viral hepatitides which are transmitted orally and altogether are imported in no small numbers. The alteration of the mode of living caused by the holi
