Health and lifestyle factors associated with sexual difficulties in men - results from a study of Australian men aged 18 to 55 years.

BACKGROUND: Sexual difficulties (SD) are common among men of all ages and can have considerable impact on quality of life and indications for future health. SD are associated with mental and physical wellbeing and with relationship satisfaction, yet they are rarely discussed with medical professionals who are often ill equipped to assess and manage them. This paper provides an updated overview on the status of SD in Australian men from 18 to 55 years of age and will form a baseline comparison for future analyses of SD based on Ten to Men data. METHODS: We used data from Ten to Men, the Austra

Cross-cultural French adaptation and validation of the Impact On Family Scale (IOFS).

BACKGROUND: The IOFS (Impact On Family Scale) questionnaire is a useful instrument to assess the impact of chronic childhood conditions on general family quality of life. As this instrument was not validated in French, we proposed to translate, adapt and validate the IOFS questionnaire for clinical and research use in French-speaking populations. FINDINGS: The sample studied comprised French-speaking parents with a child presenting a cleft lip or cleft lip and palate, aged 6 to 12 years and treated in the University Hospital of Strasbourg, France. The 15-item version of the IOFS was translate

School disengagement as a predictor of dropout, delinquency, and problem substance use during adolescence and early adulthood.

Over the past 5 years, a great deal of attention has been paid to the development of early warning systems for dropout prevention. These warning systems use a set of indicators based on official school records to identify youth at risk for dropout and then appropriately target intervention. The current study builds on this work by assessing the extent to which a school disengagement warning index predicts not only dropout but also other problem behaviors during middle adolescence, late adolescence, and early adulthood. Data from the Rochester Youth Development Study (N = 911, 73% male, 68% Afr

Change in prevalence of psychiatric disorders from ages 21 to 30 in a community sample.

The authors examined change and demonstrated variation in the prevalence of psychiatric disorders from ages 21 to 30 in a prospective community study (n = 352) using generalized estimating equations and investigated effects of past and recent psychiatric disorder on emerging adult functioning (at age 30). Results revealed significant declines in 12-month prevalence of phobia and substance use disorders from ages 21 to 30 but not in depression or posttraumatic stress disorder. Males were at significantly higher risk for lifetime substance use disorders; females were at higher risk for lifetime

Adaptation and adjustment in children of transsexual parents.

It is a relatively uncommon event that children find themselves in a situation with a parent who undergoes a transition from one sex to another. Unlike situations of divorce or a parent with a medical or major psychiatric disorder, it is unlikely that the children will know of other children who encounter similar situations. There is very little literature that describes the adjustment of these children and the nature of their relationships with their parents and peers. Such information would be beneficial for clinicians assisting children and families in this situation. To better delineate th

A national study of violent behavior in persons with schizophrenia.

CONTEXT: Violent behavior is uncommon, yet problematic, among schizophrenia patients. The complex effects of clinical, interpersonal, and social-environmental risk factors for violence in this population are poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence and correlates of violence among schizophrenia patients living in the community by developing multivariable statistical models to assess the net effects of psychotic symptoms and other risk factors for minor and serious violence. DESIGN: A total of 1410 schizophrenia patients were clinically assessed and interviewed about violent be

Association of prior criminal charges and convictions with subsequent violent and firearm-related crime: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal violence is a pressing public health problem in the United States. Those who interact with the criminal legal system are likely to experience multiple intersecting risks that increase the probability of subsequent violence perpetration. To inform development and implementation of risk-reduction interventions within the criminal legal system or for those involved in it, there is a need for contemporary population-level estimates of violence perpetration risk among those with prior criminal charges or convictions. METHODS: In this state-wide retrospective cohort study o

Mentalizing in and out of awareness: A meta-analytic review of implicit and explicit mentalizing.

BACKGROUND: Mentalizing, making sense of mental states, is hypothesized to have a central role in self-organization and social learning. Findings support this notion, but the extent of the association between mentalizing and various correlates has not been meta-analyzed. Furthermore, mentalizing presumably occurs with (explicit) and without (implicit) awareness but few studies have attempted to disentangle these aspects. We conducted a meta-analysis of implicit and explicit mentalizing in relation to the domains of attachment security, personality, affect, psychopathology, and functioning. ME

Understanding and comparing risk factors and subtypes in South Korean adult and adolescent women's suicidal ideation or suicide attempt using survey and social media data.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the similarities and differences in risk factors for suicide among adult and adolescent women in South Korea and identify subtypes of suicidal ideation or suicide attempt in each group. METHODS: Multifaceted data were collected and analyzed by linking survey and social media data. Interpretable machine learning models were constructed to predict suicide risk and major risk factors were extracted by investigating their feature importance. Additionally, subtypes of suicidal adult and adolescent women were identified and explained using risk factors. R

Facial and Emotion Recognition Deficits in Myasthenia Gravis.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular disease of autoimmune etiology and chronic evolution. In addition to the muscle weakness and fatigue that characterize MG, in some studies patients show an inferior performance in cognitive tasks and difficulties in recognizing basic emotions from facial expressions. However, it remains unclear if these difficulties are due to anxious-depressive symptoms that these patients present or related to cognitive abilities, such as facial recognition. This study had a descriptive cross-sectional design with a sample of 92 participants, 52 patients with MG and

Development of the social dimensions of health behaviour framework.

Despite rapid theoretical expansion in conceptualising individual and environmental processes, the examination of social processes associated with health behaviours has a less cohesive theoretical landscape. The purpose of this mapping review and content analysis was to develop a taxonomy of social dimensions applicable to health behaviours. Michie et al. (2014) 'ABC of Theories of Behaviour Change' text, which includes 83 behaviour change theories, was used as the data-set, whereby an iterative concurrent content analysis was undertaken with respect to all relational/interpersonal psychologic

Factors Impacting Seafarers' Mental Health and Career Intentions.

The main objective of the present study was to investigate factors related to seafarers' mental health. A sample of seafarers from 12 countries participated in the study. A list of stressors was used to assess both perception of exposure to these stressors and their subjective significance. The Symptom Checklist (SCL-90) was used to assess seafarers' mental health on 5 of 9 subscales: Depression, Anxiety, Hostility, Interpersonal Sensitivity, and Somatisation. Three significant findings emerged from the analyses. The first was that 3 types of stressors contribute significantly to mental health

A brief and efficient stimulus set to create the inverted U-shaped relationship between rhythmic complexity and the sensation of groove.

When listening to music, we often feel a strong desire to move our body in relation to the pulse of the rhythm. In music psychology, this desire to move is described by the term groove. Previous research suggests that the sensation of groove is strongest when a rhythm is moderately complex, i.e., when the rhythm hits the sweet spot between being too simple to be engaging and too complex to be interpretable. This means that the relationship between rhythmic complexity and the sensation of groove can be described by an inverted U-shape (Matthews 2019). Here, we recreate this inverted U-shape wit

Characteristics of Parents Who Feel a Lack of Communication with Coaches of Youth Sports.

Communication between parents and their children's coaches is important for children's sports activities, but the relationship between parents and coaches is not well understood. It is possible that parents feel a lack of communication with coaches, which could be due to parents' experience with sports activities or the social environment of the team. This study aimed to elucidate the characteristics of parents who feel a lack of communication with their children's coaches of youth sports. A cross-sectional study was conducted on parents of young athletes (n = 6,641) and multivariate logistic

Communicative versus strategic rationality: Habermas theory of communicative action and the social brain.

In the philosophical theory of communicative action, rationality refers to interpersonal communication rather than to a knowing subject. Thus, a social view of rationality is suggested. The theory differentiates between two kinds of rationality, the emancipative communicative and the strategic or instrumental reasoning. Using experimental designs in an fMRI setting, recent studies explored similar questions of reasoning in the social world and linked them with a neural network including prefrontal and parietal brain regions. Here, we employed an fMRI approach to highlight brain areas associate

[Violence and health: recent scientific studies].

An outline and critical analysis of scientific studies on Violence and Health is presented. On the basis of a non-exhaustive review, the construction of violence as a national and international field of knowledge and intervention is broached. Outbreaks of violence are shown to occupy a broad domain of social life that reaches practically everyone, in situations of both war and supposed peace. The unity of violence as an ethical-political question is highlighted and its extreme diversity as concrete situations for study and intervention is demonstrated. Through situating violence as related to

Female alopecia: the mediating effect of attachment patterns on changes in subjective health indicators.

BACKGROUND: The interrelationship between female alopecia and psychological disorders is complex, with a range of psychosocial consequences, but also antecedents. Psychosocial antecedents are to a large extent interpersonal and can be assumed to have a mediating effect on health care utilization and subjective health. OBJECTIVES: To analyse whether changes in health-related quality of life (QoL) are mediated by relational or attachment styles and whether these styles are associated with a particular, dysmorphophobic type of alopecia. METHODS: Seventy-four women with androgenetic and diffuse
