Chlamydia pneumoniae has been associated with atherosclerosis and several other chronic diseases, but reports from different laboratories are highly variable and "gold standards" are lacking, which has led to calls for more standardized approaches to diagnostic testing. Using leading researchers in the field, we reviewed the available approaches to serological testing, culture, DNA amplification, and tissue diagnostics to make specific recommendations. With regard to serological testing, only use of microimmunofluorescence is recommended, standardized definitions for "acute infection" and "pas

MICs of antibiotics against Bilophila wadsworthia isolates were measured by agar and broth microdilution with pyruvic acid and by Etest. The inoculum size influenced greatly agar dilution. Despite discrepancies in MICs depending on the measurement method used, clindamycin consistently showed potent activity. Broth microdilution and Etest appear to be candidates for laboratory susceptibility testing.

In order to illuminate causes of accidental occupational exposure of the house staff at the Central Hospital of Holstebro (CHH) to the potential hazards of HIV- and HBV-transmission, all cases of reported injuries occurring in 1991-1992 have been analysed. Needleprick lesions were found to account for the great majority of the reported cases (71%). Sixty-six percent of all injuries were self-inflicted during medical procedures, while 34% were caused by another person, either directly (simultaneous contact of two persons with the contaminated sharp object) or indirectly as a result of carelessn

BACKGROUND: Inadequate access to clinical bacteriology testing in low-resource settings compromises individual patient care and contributes to antimicrobial resistance. Funders, policy makers, and health administrators working to expand bacteriology testing in sub-Saharan Africa require evidence-based guidance. The aim of this study was to assemble a costed consensus list of minimum equipment and consumables required to implement and operate a functional clinical bacteriology laboratory in secondary and tertiary care hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa, to guide funders and health administrators.

Diphyllobothriosis is a tapeworm infection and is associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked fish. Among causative pathogens of human tapeworm infection, Dibothriocephalus nihonkaiensis is the second most prevalent species, contributing to over 2000 cases of human infection annually. Although D. nihonkaiensis is primarily distributed in the northern Pacific region, several cases have recently been reported from other parts of the world, including the United States. As there is a concern regarding the further spread of D. nihonkaiensis infection, accurate diagnosis and understanding

Trachoma, caused by repeated ocular infection with Chlamydia trachomatis, remains a leading infectious cause of blindness globally, with significant implications for public health. The World Health Organization and partners aim to eliminate trachoma as a public health problem by 2030, targeting specific prevalence thresholds for trachomatous trichiasis (TT) and trachomatous inflammation-follicular (TF). Diagnosis is primarily clinical. Studies have shown discrepancies between prevalence estimates of TF and C. trachomatis infection. This study, undertaken in Choiseul, Solomon Islands, evaluated

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection causes hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and death. This study examines the subjects with isolated anti-HBV core antigen antibody (anti-HBcAg), a pattern characterized by the persistent HBV carriage in the absence of HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) and anti-HBsAg antibody.
METHODS: Based on medical orders, from 2017 to 2019, serological and molecular assays were performed on serum/plasma samples of 33,048 subjects (71.4% Italians, 28.6% foreigners), who referred to the Virology Unit of the University-Hospital of Parma (Northern Ita

The objective of this study was to investigate the incidence and risk factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough infections. We included all persons ≥18 years that had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 for ≥14 days, between 1 February 2021 and 5 December 2021, in Belgium. The incidence of breakthrough infections (laboratory confirmed SARS-CoV-2-infections) was determined. Factors associated with breakthrough infections were analyzed using COX proportional hazard models. Among 8,062,600 fully vaccinated adults, we identified 373,070 breakthrough infections with an incidence of 1

Murine typhus is an acute undifferentiated febrile illness caused by Rickettsia typhi. In the United States, its reemergence appears to be driven by a shift from the classic rat-rat flea cycle of transmission to one involving opossums (Didelphis virginiana) and cat fleas. Little is known of the ability of opossums to act as a reservoir and amplifying host for R. typhi. Here, we use Monodelphis domestica (the laboratory opossum) as a surrogate for D. virginiana. Opossums were inoculated via the intraperitoneal (IP) or intradermal (ID) route with 1 × 106 viable R. typhi. Blood and tissues were c

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the observed frequency of hospitalization of patients taking mephedrone with other psychoactive substances has increased. There are no data in the literature on the effect of mephedrone use on liver function in patients, including the frequency of HCV infection. We have analysed the impact of taking mephedrone together with other psychoactive substances on the incidence of HCV infection. We have also analysed the effect of taking mephedrone with heroin, alcohol, and benzodiazepines on liver enzyme levels.
METHODS: The study included patients taking mephedrone with

Background: The cytotoxic effects of COVID-19 raise the question of a possible relation between COVID-19 infection and new-onset type 1 diabetes. We report the case of an eight-year-old boy with new-onset type 1 diabetes and an asymptomatic COVID-19 infection. Case presentation: The eight-year-old boy was hospitalized on December 18th, 2020 due to increased polyuria during the preceding 1 week. Type 1 diabetes was diagnosed with autoantibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase, tyrosine phosphatase and insulin. The Hba1c value was 11.6%. Upon admission, the PCR test for COVID-19 was positive

BACKGROUND: Infectious mononucleosis (IM) and mononucleosis-like illnesses are common viral infectious diseases which are often accompanied by a high fever, pharyngitis and lymphadenopathy in adults, although such infection in childhood is generally subclinical. Most cases of IM are caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) or Cytomegalovirus (CMV). However, it is difficult to diagnose IM only with subjective symptoms, and thus EBV and CMV are nearly indistinguishable in clinical practice.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old healthy Japanese woman had a 2-day history of high fever and consulted us.

In spite of the increasing, accumulating knowledge on the novel pandemic coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), questions on the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) infection transmission from mothers to fetuses or neonates during pregnancy and peripartum period remain pending and have not been addressed so far. SARS-CoV-2, a RNA single-stranded virus, has been detected in the amniotic fluid, in the cord blood and in the placentas of the infected women. In the light of these findings, the theoretical risk of intrauterine infection for fetuses, or of peripartu

INTRODUCTION: Since December 2019, novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection has been identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness in Wuhan, China. The classic presentation of COVID-19 infection was described as fever, myalgia, cough, and fatigue. Whether coronavirus can directly attack the endocrine glands is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: Post-viral subacute thyroiditis (SAT, de Quervain thyroiditis) has been reported following other viral infection. A limited number of SAT after COVID-19 infection have been reported up to now.
METHODS: Here, we reported 6 patients with SAT and positive
