Stage-specific phototactic behavior and opsin-mediated light perception in the concealed-feeding palm pest Octodonta nipae.

BACKGROUND: Negative phototaxis is a widespread but underexplored behavior in concealed-feeding insects, and its adaptive value and sensory mechanisms remain poorly understood compared with light attraction. The invasive palm pest Octodonta nipae inhabits folded leaflets and shaded microhabitats, providing a suitable system to examine how light avoidance contributes to habitat adaptation and whether opsin-mediated perception regulates stage-specific phototaxis. RESULTS: Larvae of O. nipae exhibited strong negative phototaxis (>70% selected dark chambers), whereas adults displayed positive pho…

Organ-Specific Responses to Plant Secondary Metabolites Reveal Mechanisms of Adaptation.

Phytosteron-incorporated diets as sexual stimulants: Role of dietary Tribulus terrestris extract to improve semen characteristics, sexual hormones, and reproductive indices of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) broodstock.

The experiment examined the beneficial impact of a dietary Tribulus terrestris extract (TTE) on the reproductive performance of tilapia broodstock and the performance of their larvae. Broodstock were conditioning for 20 days by rearing females and males separately into four groups of each and fed with four levels of dietary TTE (0, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 g/kg). After that, a 100-day spawning experiment was conducted in 12 hapas (28 m3) with a stocking rate of 30 males to 90 females per hapa with an initial weight: 250 ± 20 g and 200 ± 25 g respectively. Males and females that received the same feed …

Exposure route mediates toxicological effects of sulphur and fluxapyroxad fungicides in a non-target butterfly.

Agricultural intensification and the associated increase in pesticide use have raised concerns about impacts on non-target insects. However, fungicides, despite their frequent application, remain poorly studied, particularly for herbivorous species. This is partly caused by the fact that they are considered less harmful than other pesticides. We here investigate the effects of three fungicides commonly used in viticulture, two sulphur- and one fluxapyroxad-based ones, on the cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae) under controlled laboratory conditions. Larvae were exposed to fungicides orally …

Cadmium exposure triggers adaptive physiological and molecular responses that undermine development in Bactrocera dorsalis.

The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae), an important invasive fruit and vegetable pest, exhibits a broad host range that includes citrus, mango, and banana. Its larvae bore into fruit tissues, causing severe economic losses. Cadmium (Cd²⁺) is classified among the most toxic heavy metal contaminants, capable of accumulating in plants and biomagnifying through food chains, thereby threatening biodiversity and human health. This study assessed the effects of Cd²⁺ stress on B. dorsalis larval growth and development, alongside changes in key enzymatic activities and tran…

Efficacy of Purified Borrelial Lipoproteins (PBL) as an oral formulation in reducing transmission of Lyme spirochetes from reservoir hosts to Ixodes scapularis ticks.

Blocking transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb), the causative agent of Lyme disease (LD), from reservoir hosts to humans via Ixodes scapularis ticks represents an alternative strategy to reduce LD incidence. Here, we evaluated Purified Borrelial Lipoproteins (PBL) with a combination of adjuvants, for their ability to limit Bb transmission using C3H/HeN mice and Peromyscus leucopus reservoir models. Immunization with PBL as oral gavage, either alone or nanoparticle-encapsulated, elicited increased antibody responses and reduced pathogen burden in fed larvae and select host tissues. A formul…

Neuroprotective effect of nano-carboxymethyl chitosan from Doryteuthis sibogae against rotenone-induced Parkinson's disease in the zebrafish model.

This study investigates the neuroprotective effects of N-carboxymethyl chitosan (N-CMC) against rotenone (ROT)-induced Parkinson's disease (PD) in a zebrafish (ZF) model. In vivo experiments revealed that ROT-exposed ZF larvae exhibited reduced locomotor activity, increased edge preference, and impaired touch response, while N-CMC treatment significantly improved these behavioral parameters. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in ROT-exposed larvae were elevated (37.75 %) but decreased with N-CMC treatment (30.28 %). Apoptosis was also reduced from 38.87 % in ROT-exposed larvae to 16.52 %…

Efficacy of Seed Oils From Azadirachta indica and Schinus molle and Their Combination Against Anopheles gambiae s.l.

Due to the increasing resistance to synthetic insecticides and the proliferation of resistant strains of malaria vectors, plant-derived essential oils (EOs) are gaining prominence as an alternative for controlling Anopheles gambiae s.l. larvae. This study evaluated the larvicidal efficacy of EOs from Azadirachta indica and Schinus molle, both individually and in combination, against early 4th-instar Anopheles gambiae s.l. larvae under laboratory and semifield conditions. The EOs were extracted using ethanol in a Soxhlet apparatus. Twenty-five treatments were arranged in a completely randomized…

Experimental trichuriasis: Changes in the immune response and bacterial translocation during acute phase development illustrated with 3D model animation.

Pharmacokinetics of a fipronil pour-on formulation and its efficacy against Dermacentor nitens (Acari: Ixodidae) in horses.

The objective of this study was to standardize a stall-trial methodology for horses in order to evaluate the pharmacokinetics and efficacy of a 1 % fipronil pour-on formulation against Dermacentor nitens. Brazilian pony breed horses were housed in individual stalls within a covered barn and artificially infested with D. nitens larvae on alternate days from day -31 to -1 before treatment. The animals were treated on day 0 with a fipronil 1 % pour-on at a dose of 1 mg/Kg body weight. To determine the therapeutic efficacy, the number of engorged females naturally detached from control and treated…

Hemolymph metabolism of black soldier fly (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), response to different supplemental fungi.

The black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens L. (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), is commonly used for organic waste recycling and animal feed production. However, the often inadequate nutrients in organic waste necessitate nutritional enhancement of black soldier fly larvae, e.g., by fungal supplementation of its diet. We investigated the amino acid composition of two fungi, Candida tropicalis (Castell.) Carbon dioxide shapes parasite-host interactions in a human-infective nematode.

Skin-penetrating nematodes infect nearly one billion people worldwide. The developmentally arrested infective larvae (iL3s) seek out hosts, invade hosts via skin penetration, and resume development inside the host in a process called activation. Activated infective larvae (iL3as) traverse the host body, ending up as parasitic adults in the small intestine. Skin-penetrating nematodes respond to many chemosensory cues, but how chemosensation contributes to host seeking and intra-host navigation-two crucial steps of the parasite-host interaction-remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the…

Trichinella Infection in Culled Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) from El Palmar National Park, Argentina, and Exposure Risk in Humans and Dogs Consuming Wild Boar Meat.

Trichinellosis is a foodborne disease caused by ingestion of raw or undercooked meat containing Trichinella spp. larvae. Consumption of wild boar (Sus scrofa) meat represents an important source of human trichinellosis worldwide. In El Palmar National Park (EPNP), Argentina, invasive alien wild boars are controlled and meat from culled animals is released for public consumption following on-site artificial digestion (AD) testing. Meat trimmings and offal from the control program are often used as food for dogs (Canis familiaris). We evaluated infection and exposure to Trichinella spp. in wild …
