PURPOSE: To review the recent major advances in the molecular and cell biology of B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL).
METHODS: We analyzed the nature of malignant B-CLL B cells and their interactions with the microenvironment.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to evaluate relations among neutrophil count (including its course), type of lesion, treatment, and prognosis in patients with leukemia and perianal infection.
METHODS: Medical records of patients with acute and chronic leukemia who were followed during the last five years were reviewed retrospectively.

A child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) whose predominant leukemic clone demonstrated double minute chromosomes (dmin) is presented. CD7 antigen, a T-cell lineage associated antigen, is expressed in a minority of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Between February 1990 and December 1995, professionals diagnosed six cases of childhood leukemia among residents of the small rural community of Elbmarsch in northern Germany. We report here a case of fatal Penicillium citrinum infection. The patient, who suffered from acute myeloid leukemia, developed signs and symptoms typical of fungal pneumonia and pericardial tamponade after undergoing standard induction chemotherapy. To determine the chromosomal abnormalities and their clinical significance in adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia, karyotypic analyses with R- and/or G-banding were performed in 101 newly diagnosed ALL patients. Cryptococcus neoformans typically causes an insidious illness with symptoms related to meningitis or to lung involvement. This is the first reported sudden death due to cryptococcosis, which occurred in a child with leukemia that was in remission. The child had suddenly looked seriously ill and cried with abdominal pain and then died within 25 minutes. Disseminated cryptococcal infection of the lungs, heart, and pancreas was an unexpected finding at autopsy.
