Enhancing Disease Classification with Deep Learning: a Two-Stage Optimization Approach for Monkeypox and Similar Skin Lesion Diseases.

Monkeypox (MPox) is an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus, presenting challenges in accurate identification due to its resemblance to other diseases. This study introduces a deep learning-based method to distinguish visually similar diseases, specifically MPox, chickenpox, and measles, addressing the 2022 global MPox outbreak. A two-stage optimization approach was presented in the study. By analyzing pre-trained deep neural networks including 71 models, this study optimizes accuracy through transfer learning, fine-tuning, and ensemble learning techniques. ConvNeXtBase, Large, and…

Microarray patches: scratching the surface of vaccine delivery.

INTRODUCTION: Microneedles are emerging as a promising technology for vaccine delivery, with numerous advantages over traditional needle and syringe methods. Preclinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of MAPs in inducing robust immune responses over traditional needle and syringe methods, with extensive studies using vaccines targeted against different pathogens in various animal models. Critically, the clinical trials have demonstrated safety, immunogenicity, and patient acceptance for MAP-based vaccines against influenza, measles, rubella, and SARS-CoV-2. AREAS COVERED: This re…

8 months to 5 days: what happened when Pennsylvania changed the vaccination regulations for provisional enrollment?

In March 2017, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reduced the time allowed to demonstrate compliance with school-entry vaccination requirements from eight months to five days. We describe changes in provisional enrollment, vaccine exemptions, and vaccine coverage rates before and after the new regulation. Across Pennsylvania, provisional enrollment decreased from 11.1% in 2016/17 to 2.5% in 2017/18 (77% relative decrease). Personal belief exemptions continued a modest upward trend, similar to previous years, and medical exemptions remained steady. Among kindergartners, coverage with ≥ 2 dos
