New operative technique to reduce surgeons' risk of HIV infection.

The surgical team is potentially at risk of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from the patient. Assuming that the probability of an accidental injury during surgery is 0.01 (P2), the prevalence of HIV is 0.01 (P3) and the seroconversion rate is 0.01 (P1), we have estimated the risk (actuarial model) for a surgeon as 0.2% per year, and 5.82% for 30 years of surgery. In view of this we have made changes in surgical technique to reduce the risk to the surgical team from splash or injury. The surgeon must handle tissue with instruments only and minimize the use of fingers. Whenever poss

A tree of impact model. Evaluation of consequences of repeal of the abortion law on teenage pregnancy.

Teenage pregnancy is a complex issue in the current sociopolitical milieu. The enactment of abortion laws adds to the complexity of the problem, involving moral and ethical issues, as well as social, economic, and health status consequences that should be considered in the development of legislation surrounding this issue. The tree of impact diagram is a mechanism for forecasting possible consequences of abortion laws. Historical, social, developmental, economic, and legal forces are considered in creating the tree of impact in relation to the health and well-being of teenage mothers and their

Predicting intrauterine growth retardation in sibships while considering maternal and infant covariates.

Data on 6,210 full-term sibships (gestational age greater than 36 weeks) reconstructed from birth certificates registered in Maryland between 1980 and 1984 were used to study sibship aggregation and recurrence risk of intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) while considering maternal and infant covariates. In this study, IUGR was defined as being below the 10th percentile for race-, sex-, and gestational-age-specific birth weight based on all births registered in Maryland during 1984. Maternal factors (race, age at delivery, marital status, amount of prenatal care, concurrent illnesses, and com

[Statistical analysis of the elimination of chromosome-type aberrations and the fate of the aberrant cells].

The regularities of elimination of gamma-ray induced chromosome aberrations in human nonstimulated lymphocytes and the fate of aberrant cells have been studied. The cells at the first, second and third post-irradiation divisions were identified by the technique of differential staining of sister chromatids. A mathematical model has been suggested to describe the processes of formation, multiplication and death of the cells with dicentrics. This model has been shown to be in a good agreement with the experimental data. According to the model, the distribution of dicentrics among cells at the fi

Development and validation of a pre-percutaneous coronary intervention risk model of contrast-induced acute kidney injury with an integer scoring system.

Previous models for contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) include procedure-related variables in addition to pre-procedural variables. We sought to develop a risk model for CI-AKI based on pre-procedural variables and compare its predictability with a conventional risk model and also to develop an integer score system based on selected variables. A total of 5,936 consecutive PCIs registered in the Japanese Cardiovascular Database were analyzed (derivation cohort, n = 3,957; validation cohort, n = 1,979). CI-AKI was defined as an increase i

The DSM should replace maladaptive traits with the five-factor model: Comment on Clark and Watson (2022).

In their target article, Watson and Clark made a number of useful suggestions for improving Criterion B of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, alternative model of personality disorders, all of which assume that personality variation will be represented in the next iteration of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a maladaptive trait variation diagnostic of personality disorders (PDs). I describe how maladaptive traits are not equivalent to normal-range five-factor model traits in terms of domain structure, range, and stability, and

Prediction model to discriminate leptospirosis from hantavirus.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to build a prediction model to discriminate precociously hantavirus infection from leptospirosis, identifying the conditions and risk factors associated with these diseases. METHODS: A logistic regression model in which the response variable was the presence of hantavirus or leptospirosis was adjusted. RESULTS: As a result, the method selected the following variables that influenced the prediction formula: sociodemographic variables, clinical manifestations, and exposure to environmental risks. All variables considered in the model presented statistical s

Workplace Discrimination and Career Plateauing Among Perioperative Nurses: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study of Parallel Indirect Associations.

INTRODUCTION: Workplace discrimination has been associated with poorer psychological well-being and perceived constraints on professional development. However, little is known about its association with career plateauing among perioperative nurses or the potential roles of burnout and compassion satisfaction. DESIGN: A multicenter cross-sectional study examining parallel statistical indirect associations. METHODS: Data were collected from 342 perioperative nurses employed in 15 public/teaching and private hospitals across five geographical regions of Iran between January and April 2026. Part

The Danish Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Trial: A Statistical Analysis Plan.

BACKGROUND: Post-cardiac arrest care for patients resuscitated from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) includes multiple pharmacological and physiological interventions, yet optimal strategies to reduce post-cardiac arrest syndrome-related morbidity and mortality remain uncertain. The DANOHCA (Danish Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest) trial evaluates four such interventions-high-dose dexamethasone, prophylactic olanzapine, elevated backrest position, and early wakeup-in a factorial trial framework. This manuscript presents the complete statistical analysis plan for analyses common to all four

Optimal timing of anticoagulation after acute ischaemic stroke with atrial fibrillation (OPTIMAS): statistical analysis plan for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation causes one-fifth of ischaemic strokes, with a high risk of early recurrence. Although long-term anticoagulation is highly effective for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation, initiation after stroke can be delayed by concerns over intracranial haemorrhage risk. Direct oral anticoagulants offer a significantly lower risk of intracranial haemorrhage than other anticoagulants, potentially allowing earlier anticoagulation and prevention of ischaemic stroke recurrence, but the safety and efficacy of this approach has not been established. This article describes th

Association of weight-adjusted waist index with all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality among rheumatoid arthritis population: a cohort study from the NHANES 1999-2018.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) represents a pressing global health challenge. While obesity is a controllable risk factor for RA patients, traditional body measurements like body mass index (BMI) have shown limitations in assessing risk. The weight-adjusted waist index (WWI), a new measurement method, provides better insight into belly fat distribution patterns. This research seeks to understand how WWI relates to both all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in people with RA. METHODS: Researchers conducted a longitudinal analysis examining participants diagnosed

Empagliflozin ameliorates ventricular arrhythmias by inhibiting sympathetic remodeling via nerve growth factor/tyrosine kinase receptor A pathway inhibition.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) can ameliorate arrhythmias; however, the mechanisms underlying their antiarrhythmic effect remain unclear. Therefore, we aimed to test the hypothesis that the SGLT2i empagliflozin (EMPA) ameliorates ventricular arrhythmias caused by myocardial infarction (MI) by inhibiting sympathetic remodeling. METHODS: Male nondiabetic Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into Sham ( n  = 10), MI ( n  = 13), low-EMPA (10 mg/kg/day; n  = 13), and high-EMPA (30 mg/kg/day; n  = 13) groups. Except for the Sham group, MI models were establishe

Comparative effectiveness of adjunct non-pharmacological interventions on maternal and neonatal outcomes in gestational diabetes mellitus patients: A systematic review and network meta-analysis protocol of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in pregnancy leads to a range of perinatal complications. Although several randomized controlled trials (RCT) have tested the effect of non-pharmacological standard GDM care adjuncts on these outcomes, there is no agglomerated statistical evidence on how their occurrence risk varies across interventions and with placebo. Therefore, a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) protocol is proposed here to address this evidence gap. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search for above RCTs published in the English language will transpire in PubMed, Em

New models for donor-recipient matching in lung transplantations.

OBJECTIVE: One of the main problems of lung transplantation is the shortage of organs as well as reduced survival rates. In the absence of an international standardized model for lung donor-recipient allocation, we set out to develop such a model based on the characteristics of past experiences with lung donors and recipients with the aim of improving the outcomes of the entire transplantation process. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of 404 lung transplants carried out at the Reina Sofía University Hospital (Córdoba, Spain) over 23 years. We analyzed various clinical variables obta

Erroneous inference based on a lack of preference within one group: Autism, mice, and the social approach task.

The Social Approach Task is commonly used to identify sociability deficits when modeling liability factors for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in mice. It was developed to expand upon existing assays to examine distinct aspects of social behavior in rodents and has become a standard component of mouse ASD-relevant phenotyping pipelines. However, there is variability in the statistical analysis and interpretation of results from this task. A common analytical approach is to conduct within-group comparisons only, and then interpret a difference in significance levels as if it were a group differe

Challenges in developing methods for quantifying the effects of weather and climate on water-associated diseases: A systematic review.

Infectious diseases attributable to unsafe water supply, sanitation and hygiene (e.g. Cholera, Leptospirosis, Giardiasis) remain an important cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in low-income countries. Climate and weather factors are known to affect the transmission and distribution of infectious diseases and statistical and mathematical modelling are continuously developing to investigate the impact of weather and climate on water-associated diseases. There have been little critical analyses of the methodological approaches. Our objective is to review and summarize statistical and m

How successful is successful? Aortic arch shape after successful aortic coarctation repair correlates with left ventricular function.

OBJECTIVES: Even after successful aortic coarctation repair, there remains a significant incidence of late systemic hypertension and other morbidities. Independently of residual obstruction, aortic arch morphology alone may affect cardiac function and outcome. We sought to uncover the relationship of arch 3-dimensional shape features with functional data obtained from cardiac magnetic resonance scans. METHODS: Three-dimensional aortic arch shape models of 53 patients (mean age, 22.3 ± 5.6 years) 12 to 38 years after aortic coarctation repair were reconstructed from cardiac magnetic resonance

Fascial Dehiscence and Incisional Hernia Prediction Models: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Fascial dehiscence (FD) and incisional hernia (IH) pose considerable risks to patients who undergo abdominal surgery, and many preventive strategies have been applied to reduce this risk. An accurate predictive model could aid identification of high-risk patients, who could be targeted for particular care. This study aims to systematically review existing FD and IH prediction models. METHODS: Prediction models were identified using pre-specified search terms on SCOPUS, PubMed, and Web of Science. Eligible studies included those conducted in adult patients who underwent any kind of
