Benzodiazepines: abuse and new use.

Both abuse and new uses for benzodiazepines are reviewed. The pharmacology of benzodiazepines is summarized and statistics regarding their general use are given. The question of benzodiazepine abuse is reviewed in some detail and the question of rebound, recurrence of symptoms and physiological withdrawal is differentiated. Benzodiazepines are regarded as a very safe class of drugs and the abuse potential is felt to be negligible provided that they are prescribed for appropriate conditions and monitored carefully. The dangers of alternatives to benzodiazepines such as alcohol or barbiturates i

[Anesthesiologic aspects of narco-curare-electroshock treatment].

The physiology and side-effects of narco-curare-electric shock treatment are reviewed on the basis of the literature and, similarly, risk groups are delimited. Directives for preoperative assessment, the anaesthesiological procedure and per- and postoperative observation are given. It is concluded that the NCE procedure is associated with a low risk and slight mortality provided the above-mentioned conditions are observed. Patients with cardiovascular disease constitute the greatest risk group and should receive optimal medical treatment prior to NCE. In cases with raised intracranial pressure

Carotid body tumors: a subject review and suggested surgical approach.

Carotid body tumors are a rare but potentially difficult surgical entity. Their pathology, physiology, and natural history are reviewed along with surgical results reported in the literature. A surgical approach for removal of these tumors is presented which differs significantly from the recommended techniques in that emphasis is placed on intraoperative monitoring of cerebral blood flow, the the selective use of shunts, a tumor-adventitial plane of dissection, preservation of the carotid artery complex, and mobilization of the parotid gland. Thirteen cases using these techniques are reviewed

Automated high-speed analysis of gastrointestinal myoelectric activity.

The value of myoelectric recording in the gastrointestinal tract has been limited by the difficulty of analyzing the prolonged recordings which are required to demonstrate integrated physiological activity. This problem has been solved by the use of a tape recording system with accelerated replay, originally developed for cardiac monitoring. Rapid replay not only reduces the time required for data retrieval but also increases the frequency of the recorded signals to allow electronic separation of fast and slow wave activity for on-line conversion into digital pulses suitable for computer analy

Continuous versus intermittent, non-invasive monitoring of vital signs in hospitalised, ward based adult patients: A systematic review and narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent monitoring (IM) of vital signs remains the standard of care for hospitalised ward patients, yet this approach creates gaps during which patient deterioration may go unrecognised. Wearable wireless devices capable of continuously measuring physiological parameters offer the potential for earlier detection of clinical decline and prevention of intensive care unit admissions. This systematic review aimed to compare continuous, non-invasive vital signs monitoring with standard IM for the identification of deterioration and prevention of complications in adult, ward-based h

Indications of 24-h esophageal pH monitoring, capsule pH monitoring, combined pH monitoring with multichannel impedance, esophageal manometry, radiology and scintigraphy in gastroesophageal reflux disease?

Ambulatory esophageal pH monitoring is an essential method in patients exhibiting signs of non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) to make an objective diagnosis. Intra-esophageal pH monitoring is important in patients who are non-responsive to medications and in those with extraesophageal symptoms, particularly in NERD, before surgical interventions. With the help of the wireless capsule pH monitoring, measurements can be made under more physiological conditions as well as longer recordings can be performed because the investigation can be better tolerated by patients. Ambulatory esophageal pH moni

Increasing the cognitive demand of upper-limb psychomotor tasks increases the perception of effort.

The motivation intensity theory suggests that the perception of effort (PE) reflects the self-monitoring of resources and is used to self-regulate goal-directed actions. Resource monitoring and self-regulation are typically studied separately in the motor or cognitive domain. Here, we tested the effect of cognitive demand on PE in two psychomotor tasks (experiment 1), and we examined the effect of prescribing a target level of PE intensity on performance (experiment 2). In experiment 1 (n = 20, within-participants), we used fixed tempo during two upper-limb psychomotor tasks (Box and Block Tes

Wearable-Derived Data for Patient Frailty: Extending Hospital Frailty Risk Score While Confronting Bias and Inequities.

Objective, continuous measurements from wearable devices present a unique opportunity to enhance traditional, episodic clinical assessments of frailty by passively capturing real-world data on mobility, activity, and physiological signals. Integrating wearable-derived data with validated risk stratification tools like the Hospital Frailty Risk Score (HFRS) allows for earlier detection of functional decline across adults of all ages and supports timely, targeted interventions to prevent progression to severe frailty. However, deploying AI-enabled, wearable-based remote patient monitoring at sca

CGS-BR: Construction and Benchmarking of a Respiratory Behavior Dataset for the Chinese Giant Salamander.

The Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus) is a nationally protected species in China, and its respiratory behavior serves as a key indicator of its physiological state, health status, and biological rhythm. However, research on intelligent monitoring of its respiratory behavior remains limited due to several challenges, including the species' nocturnal habits, resulting in low image contrast and poor quality in dark environments; extremely subtle breathing movements; and high-cost manual annotation, leading to a scarcity of high-quality annotated visual data. These factors severely con

Cardiorespiratory tolerance of continuous dexmedetomidine infusion in preterm and term newborn infants: a retrospective cohort study.

Dexmedetomidine (DEX) is increasingly used for neonatal sedation, but safety data remain limited. We conducted a single-center retrospective study including neonates receiving continuous DEX infusion. Cardiorespiratory events were extracted from bedside monitoring during the 8 h before and the 24 h after initiation. Hemodynamic and clinical parameters were analyzed, and autonomic activity was assessed using Newborn Infant Parasympathetic Evaluation (NIPE) monitoring in a subgroup. Thirty-seven infants (18 preterm, 19 term) were included; 86% received concomitant morphine. Bradycardia episodes

Enzyme-free voltammetric sensor for monitoring of creatinine in diabetic patient using sustainable L-cysteine/AuNPs/rGO nanocomposite.

Accurate, non-invasive and routine monitoring of urinary creatinine (Crt) is essential for the early diagnosis of kidney dysfunction in diabetic patients. However, traditional enzymatic and Jaffe's assays suffer from limitations such as enzyme instability, high costs, and complex protocols. In this study, an electrochemical biosensor for creatinine monitoring in diabetic patient urine samples was developed using gold nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (AuNPs/rGO) nanocomposite synthesized by using L-cysteine as a sustainable reducing and stabilizing agent. Clinical Outcomes of Passive Sensors in Remote Monitoring: A Systematic Review.

Remote monitoring technologies have transformed healthcare delivery by enabling the in-home management of chronic conditions, improving patient autonomy, and supporting clinical oversight. Passive sensing, a subset of remote monitoring, facilitates unobtrusive, real-time data collection without active user engagement. Leveraging devices such as smartphones, wearables, and smart home sensors, these technologies offer advantages over traditional self-reports and intermittent evaluations by capturing behavioural, physiological, and environmental metrics. This systematic review evaluates the clini

Anisotropic ice-templated collagen scaffolds for soft tissue engineering: a mechanical characterisation toolkit.

Collagen-based soft tissues are often anisotropic in structure, and in regenerative medicine, it is important that scaffolds are designed to closely mimic their architecture and mechanical behaviour. Existing testing standards are not directly applicable to anisotropic structures in physiologically relevant conditions. The challenge is therefore to systematically quantify mechanical anisotropy, nonlinear tensile behaviour, and both in vitro degradation and fatigue in a way appropriate for soft, porous, natural macromolecular structures. In this study, we fabricated collagen scaffolds with elon

High-efficiency respiratory protection and intelligent monitoring by nanopatterning of electroactive poly(lactic acid) nanofibers.

The advent of multifunctional nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) has led to the development of next-generation air filters that are ready to intercept fine particulate matters (PMs) and monitor the respiratory diseases. However, it is still challenging to fabricate biodegradable NFMs featuring the desirable combination of high filtration efficiencies, low air resistance, and intelligent real-time monitoring. Herein, a hierarchical nanopatterning approach was proposed to functionalize the stereocomplexed poly(lactic acid) (PLA) (SC-PLA) nanofibers via the combined electrospinning of SC-PLA and electr

DIA mass spectrometry characterizes urinary proteomics in neonatal and adult donkeys.

Health monitoring is critical for newborn animals due to their vulnerability to diseases. Urine can be not only a useful and non-invasive tool (free-catch samples) to reflect the physiological status of animals but also to help monitor the progression of diseases. Proteomics involves the study of the whole complement of proteins and peptides, including structure, quantities, functions, variations and interactions. In this study, urinary proteomics of neonatal donkeys were characterized and compared to the profiles of adult donkeys to provide a reference database for healthy neonatal donkeys. T

Treatment with the ghrelin-O-acyltransferase (GOAT) inhibitor GO-CoA-Tat reduces food intake by reducing meal frequency in rats.

The ghrelin acylating enzyme ghrelin-O-acyltransferase (GOAT) was recently identified and implicated in several biological functions. However, the effects on food intake warrant further investigation. While several genetic GOAT mouse models showed normal food intake, acute blockade using a GOAT inhibitor resulted in reduced food intake. The underlying food intake microstructure remains to be established. In the present study we used an automated feeding monitoring system to assess food intake and the food intake microstructure. First, we validated the basal food intake and feeding behavior in
