Body cavity-based presentation of natural killer cell lymphoma.

We describe an unusual case of a 31-year-old Mexican woman who presented with pleural and peritoneal effusions involved by Epstein-Barr virus-positive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of natural killer (NK)-cell lineage. The patient had no symptoms that could be related to her nasal region, and physical examination and radiologic studies showed no evidence of lymphadenopathy, organomegaly, or other extranodal masses. Thus, this case clinically mimicked body cavity-based lymphoma. Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma of nasal type is the current designation for these neoplasms in the recently proposed World Hea

Health effects of natural dust: role of trace elements and compounds.

This article reviews the health effects of trace elements carried in natural dusts of geologic or geochemical origin. The sources of these dusts are diverse, including volcanoes, dust storms, long-range transport of desert dust, and displacement through natural processes such as landslides and earthquakes. The primary focus is dust exposures affecting communities rather than occupational groups (which have been comprehensively explored in other publications). The principal elements and compounds reviewed are trace metals (including As, Hg, Cd, and Fe), radioactive elements, fluoride, silicates

Natural history of asymptomatic bile duct stones at time of cholecystectomy.

OBJECTIVES: There is little data on the natural history of asymptomatic bile duct stones and hence there is uncertainty on the management of asymptomatic bile duct stones discovered incidentally at the time of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. We retrospectively reviewed a group of patients who had previously underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, but who did not have a pre-operative suspicion of intra-ductal stones, to determine if any biliary complications had subsequently developed. A group of patients who had no pre-operative suspicion of intra-ductal stones, but routinely underwent intraoper

Approximation of flammability region for natural gas-air-diluent mixture.

The growing implementation of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in reducing NO(x) emissions of engine is of paramount motivation to perform a fundamental research on the flammability characteristics of fuel-air-diluent mixtures. In this work, the influences of EGR on the flammability region of natural gas-air-diluent flames were experimentally studied in a constant volume bomb. An assumption of critical burning velocity at flammability limit is proposed to approximately determine the flammability region of these mixtures. Based on this assumption, an estimation of the flammability map for natura

Evaluation of natural and synthetic stimulants of plant immunity by microarray technology.

Induction of local defence, as well as systemic resistance, of plants is associated with transcriptional reprogramming. Here we report on defence gene induction by natural and synthetic stimulants of plant immunity. Gene expression changes in Arabidopsis thaliana were monitored in response to several plant immunity stimulants (plant activators) using Northern blotting and an application-based array representing c. 750 genes involved in several aspects of plant defence and/or plant stress. The commercial plant activators Bio-S, Neudo-Vital and PRORADIX have been shown to induce systemic resista

Functional analysis of natural mutations in two TWIST protein motifs.

The basic helix-loop-helix protein Twist, a transcriptional repressor, is essential for embryogenesis in both invertebrates and vertebrates. Haploinsufficiency of the human TWIST1 gene, which causes the craniosynostosis disorder Saethre-Chotzen syndrome (SCS), is related to failure to repress transcription of CDKN1A (which encodes p21/WAF1/CIP1), promoting osteoblast differentiation. We have examined the functional significance of natural TWIST1 variants present in craniosynostosis patients and in their healthy relatives. Both deletion and duplication variants of the glycine-rich tract Gly5Ala

The natural history of renal function following orthotopic heart transplant.

BACKGROUND: The outcome of solid organ transplantation has dramatically improved after the introduction of the calcineurin inhibitor cyclosporine. With the increasing longevity of heart transplant recipients, the long-term effects of cyclosporine on renal function have become more evident. The natural history of kidney function following orthotopic heart transplant is not well defined and long-term follow up studies are scant. METHODS: We conducted an observational study on patients who received a heart transplant at Saint Louis University Hospital between January 1, 1983 and December 31, 198

Bilateral tubal pregnancy after natural conception: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral tubal pregnancy is very rare and usually follows ovulation stimulation. CASE: A 36-year-old woman with acute pelvic pain underwent emergency laparoscopy for suspected left ruptured tubal pregnancy. Bilateral hematosalpinx with a ruptured left tubal pregnancy and active bleeding from the right fallopian tube was noted during surgery, and bilateral salpingectomy was performed by laparoscopy. Pathologic examination of the left tube confirmed the presence of conception products and trophoblastic tissue. The right salpingectomy specimen contained some trophoblastic tissue res

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: etiology, anatomy, natural history, and bracing.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine. Despite active efforts by different research teams, the etiology of scoliosis remains unclear. Treatment of scoliosis requires a solid understanding of the natural history of the disorder as well as sound clinical judgment. The evaluation, monitoring, and institution of conservative treatment such as bracing can present a challenge to the orthopaedic surgeon. Clinical monitoring is the only intervention necessary in most patients. A detailed review of the patient's history as well as a careful physical examination c

Naturally occurring Sarcocystis neurona-like infection in a dog with myositis.

Tissue stages similar to those of Sarcocystis neurona, the causative agent of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis, were identified in skeletal muscles of a dog. The dog, a 6-year-old Labrador retriever, was seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii infection and euthanized due to a history of polymyositis and progressive muscular atrophy. Histologically, 30, variably sized, microscopic, intracellular sarcocysts were observed in 60 sections of skeletal muscles taken from the neck, fore limbs and hind limbs. The cysts were only observed in inflamed skeletal muscles, but were mostly in myocytes at the pe

Transcription of the Rickettsia felis ompA gene in naturally infected fleas.

Rickettsia felis is maintained transovarially in Ctenocephalides felis fleas in a widespread geographic distribution and is transmitted to humans and animals, including opossums. This rickettsia is phylogenetically a member of the spotted fever group, most closely related to Rickettsia akari and R. australis. An unusual feature of this rickettsia is that the gene for the outer membrane protein A (OmpA) is interrupted by stop codons. To determine if this putatively dying gene is expressed, mRNA was extracted from laboratory-maintained, R. felis-infected cat fleas. Reverse transcriptase-polymera

Involvement of natural killer cells in PolyI:C-induced liver injury.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The roles of T cells, natural killer T cells (NKT) and macrophages in autoimmune hepatitis have been well documented. However, the roles of natural killer (NK) cells in liver injury remain obscure. Here we examined the effect of Polyinosinic: polycytidylic acid (PolyI:C)-activated NK cells on liver injury. METHODS: Mice were intraperitoneally injected with PolyI:C at a dose of 20mug/g body wt. The percentage and absolute number of NK cells in the liver were analyzed with flow cytometry. Comparison of serological tests for the detection of natural heartworm infection in cats.

Serological tests were performed on 380 cats with necropsy-confirmed heartworm disease to compare the performance of currently available commercial laboratory and point-of-care heart-worm serological tests in a heartworm-endemic area. Overall, antigen tests detected 79.3% to 86.2% of heartworm infections and were highly specific. Most cats with false-negative antigen tests had a single male worm. Antibody tests detected 62.1% to 72.4% of heartworm infections and had a wider range of false-positive results (1.4% to 19.1%) than antigen tests (0.3% to 2.0%). Serological tests for feline heartworm

The natural history of allergy: the development of new sensitizations in asthmatic children.

Allergy is an important risk factor for asthma in children as most of asthmatic children are sensitized. The aim of the study was to investigate the natural course of sensitizations in a group of children (340) at the onset of asthmatic symptoms. We subdivided children in three groups depending on the age at first visit (3-7-11 years) and followed them for 4 years. All children underwent three visits, each including skin prick test, every two years. In the 3-year age group (n = 133), 59% of children were sensitized at first visit, but the percentage increase to 88% at third visit. When looking

The natural history of untreated penetrating diaphragm injury: an animal model.

BACKGROUND: Surgical repair of diaphragm injuries is rather straightforward, but diagnosis can be difficult. The natural history of diaphragm injury is quite controversial. Undoubtedly, many diaphragmatic injuries are missed at the initial evaluation. Some theories state that diaphragm injuries do not heal, and that all eventually lead to herniation. Current theories regarding uniform herniation of all diaphragm injuries are not supported by animal models. The authors developed a penetrating diaphragm injury model to study the natural history of this injury. METHODS: This study used 48 male S

Risk factors for adolescent alcohol use following a natural disaster.

INTRODUCTION: On 29 March 1998, a series of category F-3 and F-4 tornadoes caused wide-spread destruction in four rural southern Minnesota counties in the United States. Extensive research has examined the impact of disaster exposure on adults' psychological functioning, including alcohol use. However, there has been little research on potential risk factors for adolescents' alcohol use following disaster exposure. HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that demographic variables such as age and gender, prior drinking involvement, extent of prior trauma history, level of disaster exposure, and curre

Poststroke "pushing": natural history and relationship to motor and functional recovery.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with hemiparetic stroke have impaired balance control. Some patients ("pushers") are resistant to accepting weight on and actively "push" away from the nonparetic side. This research identified pushers from stroke patients with moderate to severe hemiparesis and examined longitudinal changes in symptoms, level of impairment, and functional independence. METHODS: Prospective sample of hemiparetic stroke patients (n=65) located in Toronto, Canada. Detailed clinical assessments were performed within 10 days postonset, at 6 weeks, and at 3 months. RESULTS: At 1 w

Reduced inorganic phosphorus in the natural environment: significance, speciation and determination.

It is commonly assumed that phosphorus occurs almost exclusively in the environment as fully oxidized phosphate (primarily H(2)PO(4)(-) and HPO(4)(2-), where the oxidation state of phosphorus is +V). Recent developments in the field of microbiology and research on the origin of life have suggested a possibly significant role for reduced, inorganic forms of phosphorus in bacterial metabolism and as evolutionary precursors of biological phosphate compounds. Reduced inorganic forms of phosphorus include phosphorus acid (H(3)PO(3), P(+III)), hypophosphorus acid (H(3)PO(2), P(+I)) and various forms
