A cohort study to assess the safety and coverage of COVID-19, influenza, and pertussis vaccine in Australian pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to evaluate the safety and impact of maternal influenza, pertussis, COVID-19 vaccine on perinatal outcomes and identify determinants of uptake among pregnant women in South Australia. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 19,098 pregnant women who delivered at the Women's and Children's Hospital in South Australia between 2020 to 2023. Cox proportional-hazards models estimated hazard ratios (HRs) for time-sensitive perinatal outcomes, and log-binomial models were used for time-independent outcomes. Poisson regression models were used to estimate adjuste

Maternal factors and perinatal outcomes associated with early-onset versus late-onset fetal growth restriction: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is considered to be one of the most common causes of adverse perinatal outcomes. This study conducted a meta-analysis of the maternal factors and perinatal outcomes associated with early-onset FGR (EO-FGR) compared to late-onset FGR (LO-FGR). METHODS: Studies describing the maternal factors and/or perinatal outcomes in singleton pregnant women with ultrasound and Doppler-confirmed FGR published between 2014 and 2024 in Scopus, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and PubMed databases were systematically searched with protocol registered in PROSPERO (CRD420245886

Causes and risk factors for deaths in young infants in South Asia: the ANISA prospective population-based observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Strategies for reducing infant mortality require accurate, local, population-level data. We conducted a population-based observational study in three countries in South Asia to describe risk factors, causes and rates of mortality in young infants. METHODS: Pregnancies, births and pregnancy outcomes were determined through household surveillance, and cause of deaths was ascertained by verbal autopsy. Cox regression was used to identify risk factors for deaths during days 0-<3, 3-<7 and 7-<60. RESULTS: Among 73 622 pregnancy outcomes, 4638 deaths were identified, including 1669 s

Amino acid residues in the tail fiber differentiate the host specificity of Cronobacter sakazakii bacteriophage.

Cronobacter sakazakii is a Gram-negative pathogen that causes severe infections such as neonatal meningitis and sepsis. Bacteriophages (phages) rely on tail fibers for host recognition and infection, but the mechanisms of how phages recognize their bacterial hosts are not completely elucidated. In this study, two lytic C. sakazakii phages belonging to the Drexlerviridae family, CRES7 and CRES9, were isolated from sewage in South Korea. The genomes of both phages are almost the same, with only two nucleotide differences in the gene encoding a putative tail fiber, causing two amino acid differen

Structural and genomic insights into erythromycin and clindamycin resistance of group B Streptococcus isolates in rural West Virginia, United States.

INTRODUCTION: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a leading etiological agent of neonatal sepsis and meningitis, as well as invasive infections that predominately affect adults over 65 and people with comorbidities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) nationwide surveillance has identified rising clindamycin and erythromycin resistance as a concerning level threat for invasive GBS infections. West Virginia (WV) is a rural state outside the CDC catchment area, therefore, we investigated 65 WV-GBS isolates identified in clinical specimens from various sources for serotype distribut…

Risk factors for infant hearing loss: a meta-analysis.

Hearing loss is a common disability in infants that significantly impacts their cognitive, language, and literacy development. This study aimed to systematically assess the risk factors for the early identification and intervention in infant hearing loss. Databases were searched for meta-analyses of observational studies until November 2023. The quality assessment was performed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool, and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to assess the certainty of the evidence. A meta-analysis identified 14 risk fact

Machine learning models based on clinical indices and cardiotocographic features for discriminating asphyxia fetuses-Porto retrospective intrapartum study.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal asphyxia is one of the most frequent causes of neonatal mortality, affecting approximately four million newborns worldwide each year and causing the death of one million individuals. One of the main reasons for these high incidences is the lack of consensual methods of early diagnosis for this pathology. Estimating risk-appropriate health care for mother and baby is essential for increasing the quality of the health care system. Thus, it is necessary to investigate models that improve the prediction of perinatal asphyxia. Access to the cardiotocographic signals (CTGs) i

Post-discharge healthcare utilization in infants with neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome.

The opioid epidemic in the United States has led to a significant increase in the incidence of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS); however, the understanding of long-term consequences of NOWS is limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate post-discharge healthcare utilization in infants with NOWS and examine the association between NOWS severity and healthcare utilization. A retrospective cohort design was used to ascertain healthcare utilization in the first year after birth-related discharge using the CERNER Health Facts® database. ICD-9/ICD-10 diagnostic codes were used to

Development of a risk calculator to predict attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in very preterm/very low birth weight newborns.

BACKGROUND: Very preterm/very low birth weight (VP/VLBW) newborns can have lifelong morbidities, as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Clinicians have no markers to discriminate which among those individuals will develop later ADHD, based only on the clinical presentation at birth. Our aim was to develop an individualized risk calculator for ADHD in VP/VLBW newborns. METHODS: This retrospective prognostic study included a consecutive sample of all VP/VLBW children (gestational age <32 weeks and/or birth weight <1.5 kg) born between 2010 and 2012 from a clinical cohort in a Brazi

Congenital pyloric atresia - nine new cases: Single-center experience of the long-term follow-up and the lessons learnt over a decade.

BACKGROUND: Congenital pyloric atresia (CPA) is a rare anomaly with an incidence of 1 in 100,000 live births. Depending on the type of anomaly patients can either present in the neonatal period or later in life with subtle nonspecific signs and symptoms. We present our institute's experience in handling these cases over the last decade and highlight lessons learnt. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed records of patients diagnosed with CPA and managed at our centre between Jan 2006 to June 2016. We looked into the period of gestation, birth weight, gender, age at onset of sympto
