BACKGROUND: Thyroid cancer in children and adolescents has rarely been reported in Taiwan. The purpose of this study is to realize the characteristics of thyroid cancer of children and adolescents.
METHODS: From 1971 to 1992, a total of 726 patients with cancer of thyroid were treated at Veterans General Hospital-Taipei. Of these, 37 were below the age of 21, and were followed 1 to 21 years with an average of 7.4 years.

A case of adenocarcinoma of the splenic flexure during pregnancy is reported. A 27-year-old woman was admitted at 34 weeks of pregnancy with abdominal pain and vomiting. 36 hours after normal delivery an emergency exploratory laparotomy was performed for intestinal obstruction. We present a case report of a relapse to the mediastinal lymph node alone, 38 months after orchiectomy on surveillance for stage I typical seminoma. The patient, a 63-year-old man, was treated with high inguinal orchiectomy for left testicular tumor and close follow-up. Staging of rectal carcinoma before surgical treatment was performed in a prospective blind study, comparing digital rectal exploration and transrectal linear ultrasonography (TRUS) with the resulting pathological examination. TRUS underestimated depth of penetration in 3 of 33 patients and overestimation resulted in 9 of 74. The figures for digital examination were 5 of 18 and 20 of 76, respectively. We report a 24-year-old man who presented unilateral multiple cranial nerve involvements followed by progressive paraplegia. The patient expired after developing DIC and pneumonia. Clear-cell hidradenocarcinoma is a malignant tumor of sweat gland origin. It is most often found on the trunk, head, and extremities. This case report describes a rare occurrence of this tumor on the vulva of a young woman. The discovery of metastatic disease reflects the potentially aggressive nature of this tumor.

Two hundred and fifty-five patients with Hodgkin's disease and with localized pulmonary involvement (Stage IIE) were retrospectively assessed for their response to different treatment programmes while considering the size of mediastinal lymph nodes and the extent of pulmonary disease (involvement of lung subsegment, segment or lobe). The authors studied the results of repeated radical operations performed in 73 patients who had been subjected earlier to exploratory and palliative operations. During repeated interventions radical operations were conducted on 54 (74%) patients which were of a combined character in 11 (20.4%) of them. Primary malignant melanoma of the adrenal gland is an established entity despite early doubts. It originates in the adrenal medulla from cells derivative of the neural crest. Because of the high frequency of metastatic involvement of the adrenal by cutaneous and ocular melanomas, rigid diagnostic criteria should be followed. Only four cases of this lesion have been reported since 1946. Erysipelas carcinomatosum can be differentiated on the one hand from other special forms of cutaneous metastasis, such as carcinoma teleangiectaticum, carcinoma en cuirasse or carcinoma eburné and on the other from secondary tumour-specific or non-tumour-specific erythematous lesions.
