Preserved central cholinergic functioning to transcranial magnetic stimulation in de novo patients with celiac disease.

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease (CD) is now viewed as a systemic disease with multifaceted clinical manifestations. Among the extra-intestinal features, neurological and neuropsychiatric symptoms are still a diagnostic challenge, since they can precede or follow the diagnosis of CD. In particular, it is well known that some adults with CD may complain of cognitive symptoms, that improve when the gluten-free diet (GFD) is started, although they may re-appear after incidental gluten intake. Among the neurophysiological techniques, motor evoked potentials (MEPs) to transcranial magnetic stimulation (T

Rewiring the primary somatosensory cortex in carpal tunnel syndrome with acupuncture.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common entrapment neuropathy, affecting the median nerve at the wrist. Acupuncture is a minimally-invasive and conservative therapeutic option, and while rooted in a complex practice ritual, acupuncture overlaps significantly with many conventional peripherally-focused neuromodulatory therapies. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms by which acupuncture impacts accepted subjective/psychological and objective/physiological outcomes are not well understood. Eligible patients (n = 80, 65 female, age: 49.3 ± 8.6 years) were enrolled and randomized into three

Surgical repair of vaginal prolapse: a gynaecological hernia.

Female pelvic organ prolapse refers to the descent of the pelvic organs towards or through the vagina. The similarities between vaginal prolapse and herniae in their aetiology and treatment make this an interesting area for all those operating in the pelvis. It is a common condition with prevalence estimates varying from 2% for symptomatic prolapse to 50% for asymptomatic prolapse [Samuelsson EC, Arne Victor FT, Tibblin G, Svardsudd KF. Signs of genital prolapse in a Swedish population 20 to 59 years of age and possible related factors. Am J Obstet Gynecol 1999;180:299-305]. Approximately 50%

Intermuscular coherence as a candidate biomarker for primary lateral sclerosis.

Objective: Reliable and widely accessible neurophysiological biomarkers are needed to assess upper motor neuron (UMN) dysfunction. We investigated whether intermuscular coherence in the beta-gamma frequency range (IMCβγ) and its imaginary component (ICOHβγ) can serve as a biomarker for PLS. Methods: IMCβγ and ICOHβγ were evaluated in upper and lower limb muscle pairs in 21 individuals with PLS along with 42 age- and sex-matched neurotypical control participants. PLS participants underwent clinical evaluations including deep tendon reflex assessment and manual muscle strength testing. Results:

Behavioral change: from neurobiology to behavioral-change theories and back - part 1.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral change remains challenging despite a vast body of evidence linking health behaviors with several health outcomes. Over the past few decades, various health-behavior change theories and techniques have emerged, leading to significant advances in the field. However, although some existing theories provide competent models to structure behavioral-change approaches, they do not provide a unified neurobiological foundation. OBJECTIVE: To outline the connections between neuroscientific foundations and behavioral-change theories and to provide an overarching neuroscientific pe

Windows to Consciousness: The Role of Fronto-Parietal Connectivity in Anesthesia-Induced Unconsciousness.

The exploration of consciousness and the elucidation of the mechanisms underlying general anesthesia are two intertwined endeavors that have significantly advanced our understanding of the neural correlates of awareness. Both fields converge on the neural systems that regulate consciousness. Frontoparietal networks, known for their involvement in executive functions, attention, and cognitive control, emerge as key players in the transition from wakefulness to anesthesiainduced unconsciousness. This review synthesizes recent findings highlighting the pivotal role of fronto-parietal connectivity

Cross-modal synchronization of EEG and ECG reveals hidden signatures of recovery in traumatic brain injury.

Accurate assessment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is critical for customization of neurorehabilitation treatments and clinical decision-making. Existing monitoring approaches either rely on subjective evaluation or isolated physiological signals, limiting real-time responsiveness and multimodal insight. This study introduces a novel framework integrating electroencephalography (EEG) and electrocardiography (ECG) to explore heart-brain synchronization as a biomarker for neurological state in TBI patients. We first define a synchronization metric using EEG delta power and heart rate variabilit

Regular intake of caffeinated but not decaffeinated coffee attenuates behavioral modifications in mice subject to chronic unpredictable stress.

The regular intake of moderate doses of coffee is increasingly recognized as a lifestyle factor associated with a lower incidence of depressive-like conditions; however, there is still a debate on the relative effects of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee. We now resorted to a model of chronic unpredictable stress to compare how the regular drinking of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee impacted on stress-induced deterioration of mood and memory in adult mice. Stressed mice displayed lower weight gain, increased locomotion and greater anxiety, lower motivation in the splash test, less stru

The neural mechanisms of Charles Bonnet syndrome.

Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) describes the experience of visual hallucinations that cannot be explained by any other cause in individuals with visual impairment. CBS remains underrecognized and is poorly understood, with limited knowledge of its underlying mechanisms. This review examines the neurobiological basis of CBS, discussing neuroimaging, neurophysiological, structural, and biochemical perspectives. The review identifies evidence on the roles of neural compensation and cortical hyperexcitability in the emergence of visual hallucinations following visual deprivation. Despite methodolog

Electrophysiological biomarkers of concussion in adolescents measured using magnetoencephalography.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescence is a critical period of neurodevelopment and concussion, also known as mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), during this stage of life can have long lasting consequences. Concussion in paediatric populations presents with heterogenous symptoms and this study aimed to use magnetoencephalography (MEG)-a powerful imaging tool-to characterize alterations in brain electrophysiology in adolescents with concussion history. METHODS: We analyzed resting state MEG data from a cross-sectional sample of adolescents with a history of concussion (n = 27) against neurotypical controls (

The sarcopenia-pain connection: why mechanisms matter for patient care?

Sarcopenia and pain are two highly prevalent conditions in aging populations, each exerting profound effects on mobility, independence, and quality of life. Emerging evidence demonstrates that these conditions are not merely coincidental but are closely interconnected through shared biological, mechanical, and neurophysiological pathways. Pain reduces physical activity, accelerates muscle wasting, and fosters functional decline, while sarcopenia increases vulnerability to painful syndromes such as osteoarthritis, fragility fractures, and low back pain. This bidirectional relationship is furthe

Auditory contributions to postural and locomotor control: from basic research to clinical applications.

Auditory information plays a critical role in human posture and locomotion. Beyond its obvious contribution to spatial awareness, sound provides continuous cues about body orientation, movement dynamics and environmental context. This review summarizes current knowledge on how auditory inputs modulate postural stability, locomotor kinematics and muscle coordination through multisensory integration with visual, somatosensory and vestibular systems. We highlight evidence from behavioural, neurophysiological and clinical studies showing that auditory features, for example coming from spatialised

Pathogenic O-GlcNAc dyshomeostasis is associated with cortical malformations and hyperactivity.

Missense variants in the O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) gene have recently been shown to segregate with a syndromic form of intellectual disability (OGT-ID), underscoring the importance of protein O-GlcNAcylation in brain function. However, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms linking ID to potential OGT malfunction-whether developmental, neurophysiological, or both - remain unclear. Here, we present comprehensive analyses encompassing behaviour and brain architecture of a rodent model carrying the pathogenic C921Y OGT-ID variant. These mice show a range of behavioural deficits, including

Case Report: Anti-GQ1b antibody-positive overlap syndrome: a pediatric case involving the brainstem, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.

Disorders associated with anti-GQ1b antibodies predominantly encompass Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis (BBE), Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), and Miller Fisher syndrome. Concurrent presentation of BBE, GBS, and acute transverse myelitis is exceptionally rare and presents significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This report describes an 8-year-old boy who exhibited clinical features consistent with all three conditions, including impaired consciousness, ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and limb weakness. Laboratory investigations revealed positive serum anti-GQ1b IgG antibodies, elevated ce

Understanding the intention-behavior gap in brain decisions on green express packaging: An ERP study.

Accelerating the green transformation of express packaging is crucial for sustainable logistics. This study combines behavioral experiments with event-related potential (ERP) technology to explore the interactive effects of green advertising appeals and price premiums on consumers' willingness to pay for green express packaging. Behavioral results reveal that price premium act as a primary structural barrier, with consumers' green choices decreasing significantly as costs increase. The ERPs data uncover the underlying psychological conflict during decision-making: in the early stage, high pric

Elevated EEG fractal dimension in Parkinson's during timing tasks.

Fractal Dimension (FD), a measure of signal complexity, offers unique insights into nonlinear brain dynamics in neurodegenerative disorders. While Electroencephalography (EEG)-based biomarkers for Parkinson's disease (PD) are emerging, the fractal properties of PD-related neural activity remain underexplored. Here, we introduce FD as a novel nonlinear biomarker to distinguish PD patients (n=74) from healthy controls (n=37) during interval-timing tasks (3/7 s durations). EEG recordings revealed significantly higher FD values in PD patients during response phases, particularly in frontotemporal,
