Graduate Student Literature Review: Gut integrity under heat stress in dairy cows-Biological mechanisms and the protective role of methionine.

Heat stress represents a major challenge for dairy production, impairing animal performance, health, and welfare. Among the affected systems, the gastrointestinal tract has emerged as a central site in the pathophysiology of this condition, as multiple mechanisms contribute to the loss of intestinal integrity, including redistribution of splanchnic blood flow to the periphery, tissue hypoxia, oxidative stress, mast cell activation, and alterations in hydration status and osmotic homeostasis. These processes compromise epithelial barrier function, favoring the translocation of luminal component

Vitamins as Modulators of Neurodegenerative Disease Pathways: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Perspectives.

Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, currently represent one of the major challenges in contemporary medicine and geriatrics. Progressive degeneration of the nervous system affects not only patients' physical functioning but also their psychosocial well-being, often leading to social isolation and disruption of interpersonal relationships. These processes are most strongly associated with individuals over 65 years of age, in whom metabolic syndrome is frequently diagnosed and constitutes a significant factor predispo

Traditional Chinese medicine improves performance and intestinal health in laying hens under acute and chronic heat stress by modulating ileal metabolic functions.

Heat stress (HS) represents a significant challenge in poultry production, impairing thermoregulation, intestinal function, and productive performance. This study utilized acute (6 h) and chronic (14 d) HS models at 36°C in laying hens to characterize stage-dependent responses and evaluate the protective effects of a ten-ingredient traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation. Both acute and chronic HS significantly increased rectal temperature and respiratory rate. Egg production declined by approximately 18% following acute HS and was further compromised under chronic exposure, along with

Antioxidant Interventions on Muscle Function and Mass in Aging-Related Muscle Decline: A Systematic Review of Preclinical and Clinical Evidence.

Oxidative stress contributes to aging-related muscle decline, but antioxidant interventions may affect functional and structural outcomes differently. This systematic review synthesized clinical, animal, and cellular evidence across clinically defined sarcopenia and broader models of aging-related muscle decline. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were searched through 11 July 2026. Eligible studies tested antioxidant interventions in older adults or aging-related preclinical models and were appraised using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 (

Family coalitions and restrictive eating disorders in adolescence: a lausanne trilogue play study.

BACKGROUND: Coparenting, defined as the ability of mothers and fathers to coordinate and provide mutual support in parenting, plays a key role in children's social, emotional, and behavioral adjustment. While previous research has highlighted its influence on internalizing and externalizing problems, comparatively less is known about how children contribute to and respond to coparenting at a relational level. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates coparenting behaviors in families of adolescents with restrictive eating disorders and examines their association with the patients' interactive styles

Cathelicidin expression in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis and the therapeutic potential of vitamin D.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin condition. Emerging evidence indicates that alterations in the cutaneous expression of the antimicrobial peptide cathelicidin contribute to AD pathogenesis, including weakened skin barrier (SB) function, and Staphylococcus aureus (SA) colonization. Cathelicidin expression is vitamin D (VD)-dependent and low VD, highly prevalent in AD populations, may impede cathelicidin induction. This review investigates the pathophysiological mechanisms linking cathelicidin expression with SB function and SA colonization/infection, and the impact of VD as

Characterization of rice starch changes in saline and alkaline area under different fertilization conditions based on Raman spectral recognition technology.

Starch content in rice is one of the important parameters in characterizing the nutritional quality of rice, and the starch content of rice produced in saline soils under different fertilization conditions varies. In this study, Raman spectroscopy combined with three machine learning models, support vector machine (SVM), feedforward neural network, and k-nearest neighbor classification, was used to classify and evaluate the effect of different fertilizer treatments on rice. The collected rice spectral data were normalized before machine learning, then preprocessed with multiple scattering corr

Facilitating safe transition to home for preterm infants (FAST home): Protocol for a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants (i.e., those born before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy) often require additional care and are admitted to neonatal units soon after birth. Readiness for discharge home typically requires a level of physiological maturity such that an infant is able to: 1) breathe spontaneously without additional support; 2) maintain their own body temperature; 3) take all their nutritional requirements orally; 4) weighs ≥ 1700g and is gaining weight. Longer hospital stays than necessary can be detrimental to infants, stressful for families, and costly. Currently, little is known a

Sports Dietitians Australia and Ultra Sports Science Foundation Joint Position Statement: A Practitioner Guide to the Prevention and Management of Exercise-Associated Gastrointestinal Perturbations and Symptoms.

It is now well-established that exercise can disturb various aspects of gastrointestinal integrity and function. The pathophysiology of these perturbations, termed "exercise-induced gastrointestinal syndrome (EIGS)," can lead to exercise-associated gastrointestinal symptom (Ex-GIS) inconveniences. EIGS outcomes can impact physical performance and may lead to clinical manifestation warranting medical intervention, as well as systemic responses leading to fatality. Athlete support practitioners seek prevention and management strategies for EIGS and Ex-GIS. This current position statement aimed t

Does the Influence of Low Body Mass Index on Diagnosis Complicate Genetic Studies of the Role of Cardiometabolic Traits in Liability to Anorexia Nervosa?

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder for which the underlying etiology remains mostly uncharacterized. Large-scale genetic studies of AN suggest a relationship between AN liability and cardiometabolic traits, such as lipid and glycemic biology, which may reveal novel treatment targets through pharmacological or nutritional interventions. However, the role of body mass index (BMI) in the diagnosis of AN presents a challenge in the interpretation of these genetic studies. Specifically, BMI is a heritable trait with a genetic architecture that is related to cardiometabolic traits. This bec

Structured Lipids Engineering for Health: Novel Formulations Enriched in n-3 Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids with Potential Nutritional Benefits.

Structured lipids (SLs) offer a promising avenue for designing novel formulations enriched in n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) with potential health benefits. Triacylglycerols (TAGs), the most common fats in the human diet, are both non-toxic and chemically stable. The metabolic efficiency and digestibility of TAGs are significantly influenced by the position of fatty acids (FAs) within the glycerol backbone, with FAs at the sn-2 position being readily absorbed. Over the past two decades, advancements in SL research have led to the development of modified TAGs, achieved eit
