Estimation of bicycle crash modification factors (CMFs) on urban facilities using zero inflated negative binomial models.

The objective of this study was to develop crash modification factors (CMFs) for bicycle crashes for different roadway segment and intersection facility types in urban areas. The study used four years (2011-2014) of crash data from Florida to quantify the safety impacts of roadway and traffic characteristics, bicycle infrastructure, and bicycle activity data on bicycle crashes. A cross-sectional analysis using Generalized Linear Model (GLM) approach with Zero Inflated Negative Binomial (ZINB) distribution was adopted to develop the relevant regression models in this study. Autologous platelet concentrates for bone graft enhancement in sinus lift procedure.

BACKGROUND: Autologous platelet (PLT)-rich plasma has been reported in some studies to promote osteogenesis. The goal of this study was to demonstrate that osteogenesis gained by mixing autologous PLT concentrates (APCs) with a small quantity of autologous bone graft could give a sufficient quality to lead to dental implant placement. The second goal was to compare this osteogenesis with that obtained by a traditional method (iliac bone graft), through clinical, radiologic, and histologic methods. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Eighteen patients needing bilateral sinus floor augmentation were enro

Topical Gentamicin in the Management of Bart Syndrome: A Case Report.

Bart syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by localized absence of skin, epidermolysis bullosa (EB), and nail abnormalities. We report the case of a female newborn presenting with congenital absence of skin on both feet, associated to multiple blisters in friction-prone areas and paronychia. Despite these findings, she remained clinically stable, was feeding normally, and exhibited no gastrointestinal symptoms. Based on the association of aplasia cutis and epidermolysis bullosa, a diagnosis of Bart syndrome was clinically suspected. The patient was treated with topical gentamici

Clinical form of babesiosis caused by Babesia canis in Polish foxes (Vulpes vulpes).

The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is known to be a reservoir host of various vector-borne protozoan parasites. However, the impact of infections caused by Babesia canis on the health status of the red fox remains unknown, and research on this topic conducted on fox populations in Poland and worldwide has been fragmentary. It is known that these animals can become infected with Babesia canis, but it is unclear whether a clinical form of the disease can develop in them. This study aimed to present for the first time the cases of clinical babesiosis in foxes in Poland. The observations covered four fox

Alcohol Use and Cardiovascular Disease: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Alcohol is one of the most commonly consumed substances in the world, exhibiting complex relationships with multiple aspects of cardiovascular health and disease. The majority of the research on the topic is observational and therefore prone to bias and confounding. The available evidence suggests no risk to possible risk reduction when alcohol is consumed in low amounts (such as no more than 1 to 2 drinks a day) in regard to coronary artery disease, stroke, sudden death, and possibly heart failure. The risk associated with consuming 1 to 2 drinks a day on atrial fibrillation remains unknown.

Clinical Outcomes in the Patient With Traumatic Brain Injury and Comorbid Obesity: A Scoping Review.

Very few studies exist examining the effects of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in patients with obesity, which is notable given that mTBI represents ~80% of all recorded TBIs. Given that approximately 40% of US adults have an obese body mass index (with predictions that this proportion will continue to increase), it would be prudent to focus efforts on targeted treatments for this growing subpopulation of patients with TBI. Authors have postulated that higher preinjury inflammation, as observed in the patient with obesity, could lead to greater spikes in acute inflammation following trauma

COVID lockdown significantly impacted microplastic bulk atmospheric deposition rates.

Here, microplastic atmospheric deposition data collected at an urban site during the French national lockdown of spring 2020 is compared to deposition data from the same site in a period of normal activity. Bulk atmospheric deposition was collected on the vegetated roof of a suburban campus from the Greater Paris and analysed for microplastics using a micro-FTIR imaging methodology. Significantly lower deposition rates were measured overall during the lockdown period (median 5.4 MP m-2.d-1) than in a period of normal activity in spring 2021 (median of 29.2 MP m-2.d-1). This difference is howev

Benzene metabolism and health risk evaluation: insights gained from biomonitoring.

Metabolic conversion of benzene (Bz) is thought to be required for the hematotoxic effects observed following Bz exposures. Most safe exposure limits set for Bz utilize epidemiology data on the hematotoxic effects of Bz for the dose-response assessments. These hematotoxic effects occurred among workers exposed to elevated Bz levels, thus dose extrapolation is required for assessing relevant risks for populations exposed orders of magnitude lower. Thus, understanding how Bz is metabolized over a wide range of air Bz levels is an important topic for risk assessments for Bz. Here, we analyze biom

Tinea capitis due to Microsporum ferrugineum: A case of unusual laboratory finding on direct microscopic examination of infected hairs and skin lesions.

Tinea capitis is a chronic fungal infection of the scalp occurring commonly in children of school age, especially in developing countries. It is caused primarily by the dermatophyte members of genera Microsporum and Trichophyton. Here we report presence of free-living mycelial stage of dermatophytes, a stage of fungal growth which form in culture medias, around affected hairs and skin scrapings of scalp lesions in a 3-year-old boy presenting with alopecia and multiple scaly, non-erythematous plaques. On direct microscopy examination using 10 % potassium hydroxide, the fungal hyphae and arthros

Gunshot trauma in human long bones: towards practical diagnostic guidance for forensic anthropologists.

In contrast to cranial gunshot trauma, diagnosis and interpretation of gunshot trauma to long bones remains difficult and controversial. The aim of this study is to review the published literature on fracture patterns resulting from gunshot trauma in human long bones, and to use the described characteristics to provide practical guidance for the forensic anthropologist. In order to achieve this, medical and forensic publications on this topic were reviewed. Several types of fractures, such as linear, oblique, comminuted and butterfly fractures, have been observed in either the shaft or the end

Successful treatment of a recurrent Aspergillus niger otomycosis with local application of voriconazole.

Fungal otitis (otomycosis) is a common infection encountered by otolaryngologists. Nevertheless, its management can be challenging because of its high recurrence rate and of the limited therapeutic options. A 45-year-old woman suffered from recurrent otomycosis. The ineffectiveness of successive antibiotic cures and repeated topical treatments with nystatin and then with econazole cream led to perform microbiological analyses. Culture of ear swab grew Aspergillus niger. The use of a 1% voriconazole sterile solution previously validated for treatment of eye infections was considered after ensur

[Electromagnetic interference in the current era of cardiac implantable electronic devices designed for magnetic resonance environment].

In the last decades we are observing a continuous increase in the number of patients wearing cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). At the same time, we face daily with a domestic and public environment featured more and more by the presence and the utilization of new emitters and finally, more medical procedures are based on electromagnetic fields as well. Therefore, the topic of the interaction of devices with electromagnetic interference (EMI) is increasingly a real and actual problem. In the medical environment most attention is paid to magnetic resonance, nevertheless the risk of

Olive Oil, Sunflower Oil or no Oil for Baby Dry Skin or Massage: A Pilot, Assessor-blinded, Randomized Controlled Trial (the Oil in Baby SkincaRE [OBSeRvE] Study).

Topical oils on baby skin may contribute to development of childhood atopic eczema. A pilot, assessor-blinded, randomized controlled trial assessed feasibility of a definitive trial investigating their impact in neonates. One-hundred and fifteen healthy, full-term neonates were randomly assigned to olive oil, sunflower oil or no oil, twice daily for 4 weeks, stratified by family history of atopic eczema. We measured spectral profile of lipid lamellae, trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), stratum corneum hydration and pH and recorded clinical observations, at baseline, and 4 weeks post-birth. Rec

Oral fungi in HIV: challenges in antifungal therapies.

Oral candidiasis (OC) caused by Candida species is a common fungal infection among HIV-infected individuals. Despite the wide use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) resulting in a declined prevalence, OC remains the most common oral lesions seen in those living with HIV/AIDS. Various topical and systemic antifungal drugs are available to treat OC. However, due to the patients' immunodeficiency and the nature of OC as biofilm-associated infection, relapse is frequently observed after cessation of antifungal therapy. In addition, long-term antifungal therapy may lead to drug resistance. This review

Squaric acid sensitization is not required for response in the treatment of alopecia areata.

BACKGROUND: Topical immunotherapy using potent contact allergens, such as squaric acid dibutylester (SADBE), can be used to treat alopecia areata. However, there are conflicting reports regarding the best protocol for its administration, particularly with regard to the necessity of an eczematous response after the initial sensitization treatment. OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess the impact of initial sensitization on subsequent hair regrowth. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of the use of SADBE in the treatment of alopecia areata in 14 patients. RESULTS: Eleven of 14 patients underwen

An in vitro approach to investigate ocular metabolism of a topical, selective β1-adrenergic blocking agent, betaxolol.

1. Topical glaucoma treatments have often been limited by poor absorption and bioavailability. Betaxolol, a selective β1-blocker, has been well studied for its pharmacokinetics and disposition. Limited ocular, betaxolol metabolism data is available despite a growing number of novel ocular treatments. 2. In vitro ocular fractions indicated the formation of an active metabolite, across rat, rabbit and human, which was only observed historically in the liver. 3. Ocular metabolic profiles of preclinical toxicology species, rat and rabbit, were not predictive of human in vitro ocular data. M1 was s
