Payment of patients for hospital work assignments has become a matter of great concern for mental health institutions since the 1973 federal court ruling requiring the Department of Labor to enforce the 1966 amendments to the Fair Labor Standards Act. A work program in compliance with Fair Labor Standards has been operating at Binghamton (N.Y.) Psychiatric Center since 1971. Certificates from the labor department permit the hospital to pay less than the minimum wage for patients in occupational training or in sheltered employment in a regular job. The authors believe that work therapy has impo

BACKGROUND: Occupational cancer and acute cardiac events are the leading causes of death among firefighters. Increased exposure to toxicants on the fire ground, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, benzene, and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), has been linked to certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, accelerated epigenetic aging, and other adverse health effects. PFAS are a major concern because they are persistent, can bioaccumulate, and are present in several firefighting tools. Compared to the general population, firefighters have elevated serum levels of some types of PF

Mental health problems in nurses are prevalent and impairing. To date, no literature has comprehensively synthesised cohort evidence on mental health among nurses. This scoping review aimed to synthesise the existing literature on the risk factors and consequences of mental health problems in nurses. A systematic search was conducted on PubMed, EMBASE, Epistemonikos database, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsycINFO from inception to March 2023. We identified 171 cohort studies from 16 countries, mostly (95.3%) from high-income economies. This review indicated that nurses worldwide encountered sig

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that worldwide, between 30% and 50% of those who are infected with COVID-19 experience long COVID (LC) symptoms. These symptoms create challenges with return-to-work (RTW) in a high proportion of individuals with LC. To tailor rehabilitation programs to LC sequelae and help improve RTW outcomes, more research on LC rehabilitation program outcomes is needed.
OBJECTIVE: This study describes the characteristics and outcomes of workers who participated in an LC occupational rehabilitation program.
METHODS: A cohort study was conducted. Descriptive variables

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a highly transmittable virus that continues to disrupt livelihoods, particularly those of low-income segments of society, around the world. In Ethiopia, more specifically in the capital city of Addis Ababa, a sudden increase in the number of confirmed positive cases in high-risk groups of the community has been observed over the last few weeks of the first case. Therefore, this study aims to assess knowledge, practice and associated factors that can contribute to the prevention of COVID-19 among high-risk groups in Addis Ababa.
METHODS: A cross-se

Growing evidence from epidemiological and lab-controlled studies links night shift work to adverse health outcomes, but evidence from real-world occupational environments remains limited. Using multiple wearable devices and mobile health apps, alongside other objective and subjective assessment tools, we assess nutritional intake and cardiometabolic parameters among 72 shift workers recruited from a single-center Swiss hospital (82% female; median age 31 years; body mass index 22.7 kg/m2) during three consecutive night shifts and three consecutive day shifts. While intake of calories, protein,

Cumulative night-shift exposure may disrupt circadian homeostasis and adversely relate to respiratory health. In a cross-sectional analysis of 9,464 coal miners, we found that greater cumulative night-shift exposure was associated with lower lung function after accounting for cumulative respirable dust exposure. Mendelian randomization analyses supported a potential causal link between shift work and reduced lung function and further indicated that genetically predicted lower lung function was associated with higher chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) risk. In a coal miner subgroup, l

Diesel exhaust (DE), as a principal contributor to traffic-related air pollution, poses significant public and occupational health risks. The lung microbiome could be shaped by inhaled pollutants, which play a crucial role in sustaining pulmonary health. Our prior study found a lower abundance of airway Prevotella nanceiensis (P.nan.) in DE-exposed individuals. Here, in this study, live P.nan. and its bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) alleviated lung damage under inhaled DE exposure, accompanied by reduced neutrophil infiltration and activation. Notably, DE triggered lipid droplet accumu

Hendra virus (HeV) is a highly lethal zoonotic henipavirus that has caused recurrent cross-species spillover events in Australia since 1994. Its capacity for cross-species spillover, together with its tropism for vascular endothelial and neural tissues, makes HeV important to veterinary medicine and public health. Flying foxes are the natural reservoir hosts, and horses act as intermediate and amplifying hosts through which all confirmed human infections have occurred. Detection of antibodies and viral RNA from related henipaviruses in Southeast Asian bats indicates regional henipavirus divers

The article aims to analyse health-related articles written for Sioux San Sun, an Indian tuberculosis sanatorium paper published between October 1938 and September 1941 in Sioux Sanatorium, Rapid City, South Dakota. To account for the ideological agenda behind the seemingly strictly informative content of the articles devoted to medical education, I apply the concept of biocitizenship. While biocitizenship is usually associated with the era of molecularisation, that is, the 21st century, I argue that it can be traced to the first half of the 20th century, when information campaigns about publi

Homelessness significantly hinders access to inpatient rehabilitation services, particularly for individuals with complex medical and functional needs. This case series presents three persons experiencing homelessness with disabilities-due to amputation, functional neurological disorder, and stroke-who require coordinated rehabilitation care. Each case illustrates the compounded barriers persons experiencing homelessness face, including lack of stable housing, limited access to follow-up care, and fragmented healthcare and social service systems. Through interdisciplinary collaboration involvi

Firefighters are the professional force at high risk of suffering potential health consequences due to their chronic exposure to numerous hazardous pollutants during firefighting activities. Unfortunately, determination of fire emission exposure is very challenging. As such, the identification and development of appropriate biomarkers is critical in meeting this need. This chapter presents a critical review of current information related with the use of different urinary biomarkers of effect and exposure in occupationally exposed firefighters over the last 25 years. Evidence suggests that urin

INTRODUCTION: Research has shown that quality of health-care services is often suboptimal. Little is known about the quality of electrodiagnostic testing.
METHODS: We prospectively recruited 477 adults with workers' compensation claims for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) from 30 occupational health clinics and evaluated whether electrodiagnostic testing adhered to five process-oriented quality measures.
RESULTS: Among patients who had surgery for CTS, nearly all underwent recommended preoperative electrodiagnostic testing (measure #1, 170 of 174, 97.7%). Most electrodiagnostic tests included es

The growing impact of airborne pollutants and explosive gases on human health and occupational safety has escalated the demand of sensors to monitor hazardous gases. This paper presents a new miniaturized planar electrochemical gas sensor for rapid measurement of multiple gaseous hazards. The gas sensor features a porous polytetrafluoroethylene substrate that enables fast gas diffusion and room temperature ionic liquid as the electrolyte. Metal sputtering was utilized for platinum electrodes fabrication to enhance adhesion between the electrodes and the substrate. Together with carefully selec

Immigration often results in the separation of families, and in particular transnational parenting, which is the separation of mothers from children. Transnational mothers may have greater risks for poor mental health and behavioral conditions such as substance abuse, violence, sexual risk, and depression. This study was a secondary analysis of self-reported data from 425 Hispanic mothers (328 with no separations, 60 separated from an adult child, and 37 separated from a minor child) enrolled in a randomized trial of a sexual health group intervention in South Florida (USA). Separations were r

There is growing interest in the contribution which job design can make to worker health; also a desire to better understand the multidimensional notion of 'job quality' and to develop approaches to measuring this. This paper reviews concepts of 'job quality' and 'good jobs' and examines these issues in the work of bus drivers, an occupational group commonly reported as having poor health and poor working conditions. The DGB-Index (Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund Good Work Index), a tool used recently in Germany for measuring job quality, was translated and administered to a sample of UK bus drive
