Mortality trends from 2010-2023 and excess mortalities in Perak during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus, is a respiratory infection that led to the 2020 pandemic. During the pandemic, mortality directly related to COVID-19 infection were classified as COVID-19 death based on case definition. However, excess mortality would be a more comprehensive method to look at the true impact of the pandemic rather than focusing only on COVID-19 deaths alone. The objective of this study was to determine the excess mortalities and top 5 causes of mortality that occurred during and after the COVID-19 pandemic in Perak. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total and age-spe

Coronavirus in European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) from Denmark before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic heightened public awareness and concern about the risks of zoonotic diseases potentially affecting the conservation of declining species such as the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus). To investigate coronavirus prevalence, genetic diversity, and molecular characteristics relevant to the assessment of potential zoonotic risk in European hedgehogs, 430 hedgehog faecal samples were collected in Denmark and analysed using a pan-coronavirus RT-PCR assay followed by sequence analysis. Samples derived from two cohorts: 199 individuals sampled before the COVID-19 pandemic a

Social determinants of health and migrant access to public healthcare in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, Brazil has emerged as a significant destination for migrants and refugees, contributing to a Global South-South migration trend. This trend is particularly notable for its influx from South and Central American countries, as well as African countries. Healthcare access in Brazil is universal through the Brazilian Health System (SUS). Although the existence of a social protection system is relevant, there are challenges to the law’s actual applicability in the country. Given the profound social and territorial inequalities existing in Brazil, the consequences of t

COVID-19 in Latin America: Clinical and immunological insights, vaccine development, and lessons for pandemic preparedness.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on Latin America, exposing structural inequalities, fragmented healthcare systems, and longstanding technological dependence. The region experienced a high burden of infection and excess mortality, influenced by socioeconomic vulnerability and a high prevalence of metabolic comorbidities. In response, countries expanded diagnostic capacity, strengthened genomic surveillance, and increased participation in clinical research and therapeutic evaluation. Coordinated regional collaboration facilitated the detection and tracking of emerging SARS-CoV-2 vari

Impact of COVID 19 pandemic on young patients with acute coronary syndrome in Eastern Indian population.

SARS-COV-2 virus affects the cardiovascular system by various pathophysiological mechanisms. The incidence of Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) seems to be on rise in the peri-covid era. The proinflammatory and prothrombotic milieu is primarily responsible. Traditional atherosclerotic risk factors do not seem to be responsible for this increased incidence of ACS. We chose to test this hypothesis on young Indian population lacking the traditional atherosclerotic risk factors. If established, Covid 19 infection will at least be considered a risk modifier in causing ACS in future. Subsequently, we we

Activity of MMV Pandemic Response Box compounds against Mycobacterium ulcerans viability and mycolactone production.

Mycobacterium ulcerans causes Buruli ulcer (BU), a skin neglected tropical disease, largely through the expression of a potent cytotoxin known as mycolactone. As mycolactone is central for BU pathogenesis, it follows that targeting its production with drugs could be one means of controlling the infection. However, this has not yet been attempted due to the difficulty of applying typical mycolactone-detecting assays, such as mass spectrometry, to routine drug screening to identify suitable drugs for this purpose. In this repurposing study, we screened the Pandemic Response Box, an open-source c

Perceived Clinician Autonomy Support Before and After the COVID-19 Pandemic Onset in a Pregnancy Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Patient autonomy - the ability to form intentions and undertake actions based upon one's values - is essential to patient-centered care. However, little research has examined patients' perceptions of autonomy support, defined as clinician behaviors that help patients understand options, ask questions, feel heard, and make decisions aligned with their values. This is a critical gap, particularly for pregnant and postpartum populations. METHODS: Our objective was to examine a measurable aspect of the patient-clinician relationship that could provide a window into perceived autonomy,

Nursing Home Administrator Experiences Navigating the Changing Regulatory Environment During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and state health agencies implemented numerous regulations for nursing homes addressing infection control and data reporting. This study explores interviews (n = 156) with administrators of 40 nursing homes across the U.S. between July 2020 and December 2021 to better understand their experiences with governmental agencies amid shifting regulatory standards, frequent inspections, and possible enforcement actions. Administrators highlighted confusion due to the evolving and sometimes conflicting guidance between st

Physician burnout assessed by the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory - the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic: meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of our meta-analysis was to determine the global prevalence of burnout among physicians measured by the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI). METHODS: A meta-analysis performed following the PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for trials on the prevalence of physician's burnout syndrome. A literature search (October-November 2025) was performed, and pooled prevalence was estimated using a random-effects model. Joanna's Briggs Institute (JBI) quality assessment tool was used to evaluate the risk of bias. Cochrane I-squared test was used to eval

[Practice variation in Medical Decision in Critically Ill Patients During COVID-19 Pandemic in Spain].

BACKGROUND: Research on clinical decision-making in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) during the COVID-19 pandemic is limited. The objectives of this study are to quantify variation in ICU physicians' decisions in Spain and evaluate its association with contextual factors. METHODS: This was a mixed-methods, within-subjects, qualitative-quantitative experimental study using vignettes with manipulation of contextual factors (time of decision, age and pre-existing morbidity, incongruity of diagnostic results, pandemic wave) using an online questionnaire. A total of 146 physicians who worked in the ICU

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global burden of pertussis: An analysis of trends and the emergence of an immunity gap.

Although the global burden of pertussis has declined steadily over recent decades, the COVID-19 pandemic coincided with a marked disruption of its established epidemic trajectory. We assessed pandemic-associated changes using spatiotemporal trend analysis, health inequality assessment, multivariable regression, and Mendelian randomization. Globally, the age-standardized disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) rate decreased from 378.01 per 100,000 in 1990 to 70.92 in 2021, accelerating steeply after 2019. Despite reductions, burden remained concentrated in low-sociodemographic index (SDI) count

Environmental surveillance of enteric viruses in mussels reveals reduced contamination during the pandemic restriction period.

The present study investigated the occurrence of enteric viruses in mussels and evaluated differences in viral contamination between the COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 periods. Mussel samples (n = 434) were collected from Slovenian production areas between November 2020 and October 2024, with a one-year interruption from May 2022 to May 2023 and were tested for viral RNA using RT-qPCR. A marked difference in viral detection was observed between the two study periods. Enteric viral RNA was detected in 22.4% of samples collected during the COVID-19 period, compared with 62.2% in the post-COVID-19 pe

Evolution of tracheostomy practices after the COVID-19 pandemic: The fast lane in the post-COVID era.

BACKGROUND: The optimal timing of tracheostomy in critically ill patients remains controversial. While early tracheostomy has been associated with reduced ventilator days and intensive care unit length of stay (LOS), survival benefits remain inconsistent. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic changed intensive care unit workflows, airway management strategies, and interdisciplinary decision-making, potentially affecting tracheostomy practices even beyond the pandemic. AIM: To evaluate differences in tracheostomy timing, interdisciplinary consultation patterns, and clinical outcomes

Contributions of genetic liability and the COVID-19 pandemic to rising psychopathology among youth in the United States.

Adolescent mental health concerns surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, but whether the pandemic amplified pre-existing genetic vulnerabilities remains unclear. This study examined how shared genetic liability for eight psychiatric disorders interacted with adolescent mental health during the pandemic. Using genomic structural equation modeling, we identified four latent genetic factors: Compulsive, Psychotic, Neurodevelopmental, and Internalizing. We computed corresponding polygenic risk scores (PRS) in 10,374 participants from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study© across fi

Rapid Vaccine Development in Pre-pandemic Preparedness: Platform Analytics, Regulatory Readiness, and Digital Innovation.

Analytical development in pre-pandemic preparedness is essential to achieve rapid, high-quality vaccine deployment under accelerated timelines such as the 100 Days Mission. Experience from COVID-19 demonstrated that analytics developed during a crisis introduce delays, variability, and regulatory complexity, whereas preestablished platform-adapted analytical systems enable immediate action once a pathogen is identified. This chapter outlines how fast, high-quality analytics depend on early assay development; antigen-agnostic or rapidly adaptable methods; platform-level definition of critical q

Changes in Hospitalization and Infection Burden in Patients with Multiple Myeloma Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Background: The increasing incidence and improved survival rates of multiple myeloma (MM) have led to a growing healthcare burden, particularly in terms of hospitalizations. In addition, infection-related complications remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality in these patients. The impact of infection control measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic on hospitalization patterns in MM is not well-established. Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study including all hospital admissions of patients with MM in a tertiary hospital in Spain across three different period
