Capillary Hemangioma as an Unexpected Pathology in the External Auditory Canal.

INTRODUCTION: Hemangiomas are benign vascular lesions frequently observed in infancy and childhood. CASE REPORT: A 14-year-old boy was referred to the hospital with a left-sided ear canal mass and hearing impairment. Otoscopic examination revealed a mass that occluded the canal. The transcanal surgical excision was performed. The mass was dissected from the skin, no bony erosion was noted intraoperatively, and the skin was returned back properly. The histopathological report demonstrated a capillary hemangioma of the external auditory canal. CONCLUSIONS: Hemangiomas are relatively common in

Passive immunization against phosphorylated tau improves features of Huntington's disease pathology.

Huntington's disease is classically described as a neurodegenerative disorder of monogenic aetiology. The disease is characterized by an abn … levels. Despite the lack of effect of CP13 on neuronal markers associated with Huntington's disease pathology, tau-targeting enzymes and gliosis, CP13 was shown to directly impact mutant huntingtin aggregation such that brain levels of amyloid fibrils and huntingtin oligomers were decreased, while larger huntingtin protein aggregates were increased. Alzheimer's disease/dementia-associated brain pathology in aging DPP6-KO mice.

We have previously reported that the single transmembrane protein Dipeptidyl Peptidase Like 6 (DPP6) impacts neuronal and synaptic development. DPP6-KO mice are impaired in hippocampal-dependent learning and memory and exhibit smaller brain size. Recently, we have described novel structures in hippocampal area CA1 in aging mice, apparently derived from degenerating presynaptic terminals, that are significantly more prevalent in DPP6-KO mice compared to WT mice of the same age and that these structures were observed earlier in development in DPP6-KO mice. These novel structures appear as cluste

[Between anatomy and pathology : The dissection reports of Galen of Pergamum].

BACKGROUND: The autopsy protocols in the work of the Greco-Roman physician Galen of Pergamum have so far primarily been examined from a literary and socio-historic point of view. An analysis focused on the medical aspects is still incomplete. OBJECTIVES: Which pathologic-anatomic competence do the Galenic section reports convey? MATERIALS: The approximately 400 Galenic case histories were examined for anatomic and pathologic statements obtained during dissections of animals and men. RESULTS: In 29 reports, anatomy and pathology issues are addressed. Most section reports can be found in the …

Amylin and Secretases in the Pathology and Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease remains a prevailing neurodegenerative condition which has an array physical, emotional, and financial consequences to patients and society. In the past decade, there has been a greater degree of investigation on therapeutic small peptides. This group of biomolecules have a profile of fundamentally sound characteristics which make them an intriguing area for drug development. Among these biomolecules, there are four modulatory mechanisms of interest in this review: alpha-, beta-, gamma-secretases, and amylin. These protease-based biomolecules all have a contributory role in

Toxoplasmosis in Zoo Animals: A Retrospective Pathology Review of 126 Cases.

Toxoplasma gondii is an extremely successful zoonotic protozoan parasite that has been demonstrated in a wide range of endo- and poikilothermic species. Although infection is widespread amongst domestic animals, overt disease other than abortion in small ruminants is sporadic. This survey evaluates toxoplasmosis in zoo animals based on a systematic review of pathology archive material (n = 33,506 submissions) over a 16-year study period. A total of 126 submissions, deriving from 32 zoos, two educational facilities and two private owners, were included in the study, based on gross lesions, cyto…

PHGDH expression increases with progression of Alzheimer's disease pathology and symptoms.

Chen et al. reveal an increase of phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (PHGDH) mRNA and protein levels in two mouse models and four human cohorts in Alzheimer's disease brains compared to age- and sex-matched control brains. The increase of PHGDH expression in human brain correlates with symptomatic development and disease pathology.

Developmental delay and late onset HBSL pathology in hypomorphic Dars1M256L mice.

The leukodystrophy Hypomyelination with Brainstem and Spinal cord involvement and Leg spasticity (HBSL) is caused by recessive mutations of the DARS1 gene, which encodes the cytoplasmic aspartyl-tRNA synthetase. HBSL is a spectrum disorder with disease onset usually during early childhood and no available treatment options. Patients display regression of previously acquired motor milestones, spasticity, ataxia, seizures, nystagmus, and intellectual disabilities. Gene-function studies in mice revealed that homozygous Dars1 deletion is embryonically lethal, suggesting that successful modelling o

Oxidative Stress in Human Pathology and Aging: Molecular Mechanisms and Perspectives.

Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) are generated through various endogenous and exogenous processes; however, they are neutralized by enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants. An imbalance between the generation and neutralization of oxidants results in the progression to oxidative stress (OS), which in turn gives rise to various diseases, disorders and aging. The characteristics of aging include the progressive loss of function in tissues and organs. The theory of aging explains that age-related functional losses are due to accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), their subsequ

Focal cortical dysplasia pathology: diagnostic difficulty, classification, and utility for pathogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: In the histopathological examination of treatment-resistant epilepsy, focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is the most common diagnosis in the pediatric group. FCD is classified histopathologically according to the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) classification. In the last decade since the ILAE classification has been released, molecular genetic studies have revealed mTOR pathway-related mutations as a major etiology. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of FCD in treatment-resistant epilepsy patients, explore histomorphological and immunohistochemical

The Jew's penis: circumcision and sexual pathology in eighteenth-century England.

This essay explores the contradictory, prejudicial attitudes towards circumcision and Jewish male sexuality circulating in eighteenth-century English print culture. I argue that while Jewish men had long been accused of lustfulness, effeminacy and sexual deviance, eighteenth-century culture added to these concerns a unique interest in sexual pathology, borne in part from the growing medical anxiety around venereal disease. Consequently, while Jewish men were still widely condemned for their lechery, they were also increasingly ridiculed for a range of penile and sexual disorders that were beli…

Femicide and forensic pathology: Proposal for a shared medico-legal methodology.

In a previous work, authors have proposed a medico-legal definition of femicide as the murder due to the failure to recognize the right of self-determination of women. The aim of this paper was to apply the proposed definition to a cohort of cases to characterise femicides and female homicides and assess whether femicides can be considered a distinct entity or not. A comparison between female and male homicides was performed to assess common and distinctive features. Femicides were identified and compared to the cohort of non-femicide female murder. Results were compared to those reported in p

Pathology findings in pediatric patients with COVID-19 and kidney dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is seen in one-fifth of pediatric patients with COVID-19 requiring hospital admission, and is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and residual kidney impairment. The majority of kidney pathology data in patients with COVID-19 is derived from adult case series and there is an overall lack of histologic data for most pediatric patients with COVID-19. METHODS: We assembled a multi-institutional cohort of five unvaccinated pediatric patients with COVID-19 and associated kidney dysfunction with available histology. RESULTS: Three complex patients …

E3 Ubiquitin Ligases: Potential Therapeutic Targets for Skeletal Pathology and Degeneration.

The ubiquitination-proteasome system (UPS) is crucial in regulating a variety of cellular processes including proliferation, differentiation, and survival. Ubiquitin protein ligase E3 is the most critical molecule in the UPS system. Dysregulation of the UPS system is associated with many conditions. Over the past few decades, there have been an increasing number of studies focusing on the UPS system and how it affects bone metabolism. Multiple E3 ubiquitin ligases have been found to mediate osteogenesis or osteolysis through a variety of pathways. In this review, we describe the mechanisms of
