Aussiedler, also referred to as ethnic German immigrants from countries of the former Soviet Union and other parts of Eastern Europe, constitute one of the largest immigrant groups in Germany. Little is known about their health relative to the health of native Germans. Using the German Microcensus 2005, which includes information about the health of 10,022 Aussiedler and 322,813 native Germans aged 20+ we find that in both groups high regional centrality depresses health, as does living in a region with low GDP. The proportion of foreigners does not have any consistent effect. The two groups d

BACKGROUND: Accurate estimates of the number of people diagnosed and living with HIV infection within a health jurisdiction provide the basis for planning of clinical service provision. Case reporting of new diagnoses does not account for inwards and outwards migration of people with HIV infection, thereby providing an inaccurate basis for planning.
METHODS: The Victorian passive surveillance system records all cases of HIV diagnosed in Victoria and distinguishes between new Victorian diagnoses (cases whose first ever HIV diagnosis was in Victoria) and cases previously diagnosed interstate an

The objectives of the current study, that is the first of its kind, were to determine the prevalence of the hypertriglyceridemic waist (HW) phenotype in a nationally representative sample of children, as well as the metabolic risk factors identified by HW, and to identify lifestyle habits related to this phenotype. This national survey was conducted on 4811 representative school-students. We assessed the sensitivity and specificity of the HW phenotype for abnormal anthropometric and biochemical factors by using receiver operator characteristic curves. We determined the association of dietary p

INTRODUCTION: Low-income African Americans who live in rural areas of the Deep South are particularly vulnerable to diseases associated with unhealthy energy imbalance. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has suggested various physical activity strategies to achieve healthy energy balance. Our objective was to conduct formal, open-ended discussions with low-income African Americans in the Mississippi Delta to determine 1) their dietary habits and physical activity levels, 2) their attitudes toward CDC's suggested physical activity strategies, and 3) their suggestions on how to

Work injuries and accidents have a considerable impact on public and community health. This study targeted three work sectors: metal shaping, food production and building construction. Work injuries that occurred in these sectors were compared for the years 1999 and 2000 in Jericho District in the West Bank of Palestine. One hundred three injuries were examined and information recorded about the nature of the injury, site of injury in the body, direct cause of injury and some personal information about the injured worker. The most vulnerable group were young people in their twenties, and mostl

This study examines the relationship between patient health status and the likelihood of missing appointments in a community health center serving low-income patients. Medical records of 465 adult patients scheduled to be seen during one week in February 1999 were audited for an 18-month period. Seventy-three percent of patients failed to keep one or more appointments; 43% missed one or two; 30% missed three or more. Health status measures significantly associated with missing appointments included depression (p = 0.03), anxiety/panic disorder (p = 0.03), and using tobacco (p = <0.001). Linear

BACKGROUND: Taiwan established a nationwide surveillance system for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in 1989 and adopted a policy to provide all HIV-infected citizens with free access to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) beginning in April 1997. This provided an opportunity to determine the effect of the widespread use of HAART on the evolution of the HIV epidemic.
METHODS: We analyzed national HIV surveillance data. The HIV transmission rate was estimated by use of an exponential model of HIV epidemic evolution, with statistical projection over the interval between inf

Dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS) are reportable diseases, the third most common causes for hospitalization of children in Thailand. Data collected from the Ministry of Public Health were analysed for trends. Rates of DHF increased in Thailand until 1987 when the largest epidemic ever, 325/100000 population, was recorded. Whereas the disease used to be confined to large cities, the rate is now higher in rural (102.2 per 100000) than urban areas (95.4 per 100000 in 1997). The age of highest incidence has increased, and the age group most severely affected is now th

All European countries adopted in 1984 the Regional Target 5 of Health for All 2000 aimed at the elimination of poliomyelitis. From 1991 to 1992 the number of independent states in Eastern Europe has doubled (from 9 to 20). Physical and social environment, life-styles of the population, as well as public health and medical services in the majority of these states began to deteriorate due to political and economic crises. This led to increases in incidence of some infectious diseases, notably diphtheria and poliomyelitis. The incidence of poliomyelitis has risen in the Caucasus, Middle Asia, an

Since there are many ways to segment an audience into target groups, we suggest that a productive strategy for AIDS education is to divide the audience by their actual and perceived risk. We provide an example in which we segmented an urban U.S. sample and make suggestions as to how messages appropriate for each group can be constructed. In our sample, the "unthreatened" accurately assessed their low risk of AIDS, and showed high knowledge and tolerance rates. The "panicked," who included more women and Hispanics, inaccurately thought themselves at high risk because of misunderstandings about

Sentinel testing for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection aims to monitor the HIV epidemic by testing subgroups of the population, and such testing has been carried out at the Murray Street Clinic in Perth, Western Australia since August 1989. This clinic is part of the State Health Department and is dedicated to the diagnosis, management and control of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Western Australia. Sentinel testing at this clinic is both voluntary and confidential. In the first 6 months of testing at the clinic, 2351 new patients were seen and 3000 HIV antibody tests were
