AIMS: A pilot study of the safety and efficacy of deep sclerectomy with a chromic suture implant (DSCI) for open angle glaucoma.
METHODS: This prospective trial involved 23 eyes of 16 consecutive patients with uncontrolled open angle glaucoma. The DSCI procedure involved radial suturing of a 2 mm piece of 1/0 chromic suture as an implant. Intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements and eye examinations were performed preoperatively and regularly postoperatively for up to 66 months.

Between January 1982 and January 1999, 684 patients presented with a fracture of the clavicle to the accident and emergency departments of the Tamside and Bury District General Hospitals. Twenty patients (3%) subsequently developed symptomatic nonunion of the clavicle. The 59-year-old patient complained of hearing loss on the left, ear murmur for a long time, periodic pain and discomfort in the left ear, dizziness for 6 months. She was found to have concurrent vestibular schwannoma in the internal auditory canal and temporal bone paraganglioma. Both tumors were removed in one operation. The schwannoma was removed by translabirinth access due to preoperative deafness, while the glomus tumor was removed during this access. Postoperative biopsy showed the presence of two unrelated diseases: paraganglioma (ICD-0 code 8690/3) and schwannoma (ICD-0 code 9560/0).

A 36-year-old man was admitted to our institute due to the diagnosis of esophageal submucosal tumor detected by a periodical upper gastrointestinal endoscopic examination without any complaint. Thoracoscopic enucleation of the lesion with the preoperative clinical diagnosis of esophageal leiomyoma was performed under general anesthesia in the prone position.
