Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are among the most common nosocomial infections globally and represent a significant cause of morbidity and prolonged hospital stays. There is a scarcity of molecular data regarding pathogens and virulence factors linked to CAUTIs, particularly in South Africa. This study aimed to determine the distribution and frequency of uropathogens, including polymicrobial infection patterns, isolated from catheterised patients at the Polokwane National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS), Limpopo Province, from March 2024 to March 2025, and to character

Reproductive coercion (RC) and intimate partner violence (IPV) threaten women's health and reproductive agency globally. The Addressing Reproductive Coercion in Health Settings (ARCHES) intervention integrates screening for RC and IPV, covert contraceptive options, IPV referrals, and an educational booklet into family planning (FP) services. This study examines client and provider perspectives on ARCHES in Nairobi, Kenya. A qualitative study was conducted in the three private clinics implementing ARCHES. Data were collected through 35 in-depth client interviews and 12 provider interviews three

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a prominent cause of illness and mortality worldwide. Prisons are hotspots for TB transmission worldwide. We reviewed the literature on TB in prisons worldwide, including TB risk factors, delays in diagnosis including drug resistance, the treatment accorded, and operational and logistical issues of TB care in prison. The quantity and quality of data on TB in prisons varies worldwide. The TB incidence rate in prisons varies by World Health Organization region, with African countries having the highest rates of TB and TB/HIV co-infection. Its incidence rate among inmate

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority men (SMM) living with HIV in Nigeria experience suboptimal outcomes on the HIV care continuum. Experiences of intersectional stigma has been linked to lower likelihood of engagement in HIV services, but little is known about the effects of intersectional stigma on HIV care outcomes for SMM in Nigeria. The current study explored experiences of intersectional stigma among SMM living with HIV in Lagos, Nigeria and its' impact on engagement in HIV care.
METHODS: Between January and February 2022, we conducted semi-structured individual interviews with 30 SMM living wit

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Blood donors are at risk of developing iron deficiency (ID) (ferritin <15 μg/L, World Health Organization definition). Blood services implement different strategies to mitigate this risk. Although in Finland risk group-based iron supplementation is in place, no iron supplementation is provided in the Netherlands. We aim to describe differences in ferritin levels and ID prevalence in donor and general populations in these countries.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six cohorts, stratified based on sex, and for women age, in the Netherlands and Finland were used to evaluate dif

PURPOSE: Height at 3 years of age, when catch-up growth based on birth history is completed, is considered a major prognostic factor for predicting short stature, underweight, and growth faltering. However, too few large-scale studies have followed and analyzed height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) changes in children whose stature was short at 3 years of age. This study followed and compared the growth parameters (height, weight, and BMI) of children with short stature at 3 years of age and children with nonshort stature at 3 years of age for 6 years after birth using nationwide, populati

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Since 2010, Thailand has implemented a multidisciplinary smoking cessation clinic, which provides smoking cessation services, but the effectiveness of the clinics was not formally evaluated. This study was conducted to assess the real-world effectiveness of this multidisciplinary smoking cessation program.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective, multicentre, observational study on Thai participants aged 13 years and older in 24 smoking cessation clinics across Thailand's 13 health regions. Each clini

INTRODUCTION: HIV self-testing (HIVST) presents a convenient, private approach that removes barriers to providing HIV testing services. The Self-Testing Africa (STAR) Initiative aims to scale up HIVST among priority and undertested populations. HIVST has the potential to help maintain testing services during the social distancing restrictions implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This project evaluates linkage to confirmatory testing and treatment for HIV-positive clients for the STAR South Africa site.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This secondary data analysis protocol aims to evaluate diff

BACKGROUND: The number and characteristics of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) health care providers in the United States have not been reported.
METHODS: We analyzed a national pharmacy database that included >90% of all prescriptions dispensed by retail pharmacies and 60%-86% dispensed by mail-order outlets. We estimated the number of PrEP providers by year, provider type, physician specialty, and geographic location. We also measured the Gini coefficients for the distribution of PrEP patients among providers.
RESULTS: The number of PrEP providers increased from 9621 in 2014 to 65,822 in 20

BACKGROUND: Each day, approximately 810 women die during pregnancy and childbirth and 94% of the deaths take place in low and middle income countries. Only 45% of the births in South Asia are attended by skilled professionals, which is lower than that in other Asian regions. Antenatal and postnatal care received from skilled providers can help prevent maternal and neonatal mortality by identifying pregnancy-related complications. Women's empowerment is considered to be a significant determinant of maternal health care outcomes; however, studies on the contextual influences of different dimensi

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing contraceptive availability, unintended pregnancy remains a global problem. Developing strategies to reverse this trend and increasing occurrence of withdrawal syndrome among newborn children of females currently injecting drugs warrants special attention. The knowledge base on the uptake of effective contraception among females who inject drugs (FWID) is scant. We aimed to examine the prevalence of and factors associated with the use of non-condom contraceptives among sexually active FWID with the focus on effective contraception.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the long-term outcomes of military lower-extremity vascular injuries, and the decision making of surgeons treating these injuries.
BACKGROUND: Lower-extremity vascular trauma is an important cause of preventable death and severe disability, and decisions on amputation or limb salvage can be difficult. Additionally, the complexity of the condition is not amenable to controlled study, and there is limited data to guide clinical decision making and establish sensible treatment expectations during rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: One component of effective sexually transmitted infections (STIs) control is ensuring those at highest risk of STIs have access to clinical services because terminating transmission in this group will prevent most future cases. Here, we describe the results of a validation study of a clinical prediction rule for identifying individuals at increased risk for chlamydia and gonorrhoea infection derived in Vancouver, British Columbia (BC), against a population of asymptomatic patients attending sexual health clinics in other geographical settings in BC.

In the United Kingdom, women at moderate and high risk of breast cancer between the ages of 40 and 49 years are eligible for annual mammographic screening and preventive therapy with tamoxifen. Here, we estimate the numbers of women in a population eligible for this service and the proportion of breast cancers detected in this group compared with the whole population. Women <50 attending for mammographic screening in the National Health Service Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) completed a risk questionnaire. The proportion at moderate and high risk according to National Institute of Health

Misuse of prescription drugs and injection drug use has increased among young adults in the USA. Despite these upward trends, few studies have examined prescription drug misuse among young injection drug users (IDUs). A qualitative study was undertaken to describe current patterns of prescription drug misuse among young IDUs. Young IDUs aged 16-25 years who had misused a prescription drug, e.g., opioids, tranquilizers, or stimulants, at least three times in the past 3 months were recruited in 2008 and 2009 in Los Angeles (n = 25) and New York (n = 25). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between recall of recommendations for diabetes prevention and both health behaviors and screening among women with histories of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We surveyed 228 women with histories of GDM within the past 5 years who were enrolled in a university-affiliated managed care plan. In a cross-sectional analysis, we assessed the association between recall of health care provider advice and both postpartum lifestyle behaviors and reported performance of postpartum diabetes screening. The emergence of resistance to Dolutegravir (DTG)-the cornerstone of first-line antiretroviral therapy-marks a critical turning point in the fight against HIV in Africa. Once considered unlikely due to DTG's high genetic barrier, resistance is now increasingly reported, raising urgent questions about current HIV service models. This Perspective argues that the spread of resistance must be seen not only as a clinical threat but as a warning signal for the broader health system, especially in the wake of post-COVID transformations that have accelerated decentralization, task-shifting, and self-m
