Increasing Innu participation in public health: a qualitative study of data governance among Innu in Labrador, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Indigenous Peoples are not always engaged in setting health priorities and decry misapplication and misinterpretation of their data. Indigenous data governance and sovereignty can help overcome these issues, but they are variably implemented across Nations. Public health data governance is uniquely challenging, with implementation gaps presenting an exciting opportunity to define and remove barriers at all levels of government. METHODS: We sought to identify barriers (what) and facilitators (how) to implementing a local data governance plan with the goal of increasing Innu parti

Micro- and Nanoplastics in the Human Exposome: Environmental Pathways, Kidney Toxicity, and Implications for Public Health Risk Assessment.

Plastic pollution has emerged as a global environmental and public health crisis, with micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) representing a pervasive component of the human exposome. Generated through the continuous fragmentation of larger plastic materials, MNPs exhibit physicochemical properties that influence their environmental fate, biological interactions, and toxic potential. Human exposure occurs primarily through ingestion and inhalation, facilitating particle translocation across biological barriers and systemic distribution. Experimental studies have shown that MNP exposure can disrupt mit

Barriers Associated with Help-Seeking for Stroke Symptoms Despite Public Awareness Campaigns: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The nationally advertised mass media campaign Act-FAST UK, delivered in multiple waves since its launch in 2009, has increased public awareness of stroke symptoms. However, many stroke patients still delay in calling for help and reach the hospital too late to receive emergency treatments. The reasons for this cognitive dissonance between recognition of symptoms and urgent seeking of emergency medical services (EMS) are unclear. AIMS: This study aimed to quantify cognitive, psychological, and knowledge-based barriers to help-seeking in patients with acute stroke or transient ischa

Accessibility evaluation of urban basic public service facilities for persons with disabilities: a case study of central Beijing.

In urban planning practice, urban basic public service facilities are essential spatial carriers for advancing social fairness and public wellbeing. Traditional methods of resource allocation that are primarily motivated by supply efficiency are facing new difficulties as China's urban spatial structure shifts from incremental expansion to stock optimization. As fundamental tenets of modern urban planning, equity and justice demand a more inclusive reevaluation of facility allocation, especially with regard to service accessibility and equitable for vulnerable populations. Beijing was chosen a

Impact of Vaccines Across the Lifespan: A New Perspective in Public Health-Conclusions of an Expert Panel-Part 2.

This second part of this expert panel review explores the broader impact of vaccines across the lifespan, emphasizing their role beyond immediate infection control. Vaccines not only extend life expectancy but also influence long-term health trajectories, particularly during the critical first 1000 days of life, where they prevent severe infections, disability, and mortality. They contribute to cancer prevention through vaccination against human papillomavirus and hepatitis B, reduce cardiovascular events and complications in individuals with chronic diseases, and protect against late-life fun

A latent class analysis of public opinions about gambling policy goals: a population-based survey in Finland.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The significance of a reciprocal link between public opinion and policy making is widely acknowledged in literature. The aim of this study is to explore public opinion on gambling policy by identifying distinct latent classes of attitudes towards policy goals. The findings can provide insights into future gambling regulation and policy making. METHODS: Data were derived from a 2023 population-based Finnish Gambling Study (n = 5977) representing the population aged 15-74-year-olds. A set of questions regarding gambling policy attitudes were measured. By using a latent class a

Does Cognitive Behavior Therapy Change Socially Anxious Adolescents' Behavior during a Public Speaking Task?

Public speaking is one of the most commonly feared situations by socially anxious adolescents, often prompting behavioral anxiety markers including gaze avoidance and speech disruptions. While the potential adverse social consequences of behavioral anxiety markers in public speaking contexts have been established, research into how these markers might alter through cognitive behavior therapy is still in its infancy. In this preliminary study, we investigated changes in gaze behavior and speech disruptions from before to after 12 weeks of disorder-specific group cognitive behavior therapy among

Systemic review of the relative age effect in Scottish schooling: a public health imperative for policy reform and equity.

OBJECTIVES: The relative age effect (RAE) is where an individual's age relative to their age-banded cohort influences various outcomes and has a globally observed pattern impacting health, academic performance and psychosocial development. Scotland's unique school commencement laws have resulted in extended schooling cohorts spanning up to 19 months, thus exacerbating RAE and subsequently widening health inequities. This research synthesises evidence to delineate the public health problem posed by RAE in the Scottish educational context and proposes evidence-based policy interventions. DESIGN
