Therapeutic mediastinal radiation predisposes patients to an increased risk of developing premature coronary artery disease. Other structures surrounding the heart within the radiation field are also susceptible to injury. This case report highlights the importance of recognizing concurrent damage to the internal mammary artery that, in this particular group of patients, may not be the ideal arterial conduit for coronary artery bypass surgery.

To the authors' knowledge, there is a paucity of published accounts of management of radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RION) by optic nerve sheath fenestration (ONSF) in the conventional medical literature. With higher doses of radiation being given by using conformal techniques, more radiation-induced optic neuritis and neuropathy will be identified. We report here the successful use of ONSF to restore vision to three consecutive patients with pending anterior RION, and the importance of early identification and intervention in these potentially reversible cases.

A 69-year-old man with inoperable stage I squamous cell carcinoma of the lung underwent a radical course of radiotherapy combined with platinum-based chemotherapy. Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) imaging with a dual-head coincidence gamma camera system (Co-PET) diagnosed radiation pneumonitis 1 month after completion of radiotherapy, when the clinical and radiographic signs were atypical and more suggestive of carcinomatous lymphangitis. Treatment with oral steroids was begun based on FDG scan findings, with prompt clinical benefit as would be expected for radiation pneumonitis.

PURPOSE: To assess the patterns of practice among Canadian radiation oncologists who treat esophageal cancers, using a trans-Canada survey, completed at the end of 1996.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: One of 3 case presentations of different stages of cervical esophageal cancer was randomly assigned and sent to participating radiation oncologists by mail. Acute toxicity from radiation of skull base tumors typically resolves spontaneously within days to weeks after completion of therapy. Occlusive vasculopathy is a potential complication of radiotherapy in children with optic pathway glioma. With a median follow-up of 7 years, 13 of 69 children in this study developed clinical and radiological signs of occlusive vasculopathy after radiotherapy within a median interval of 36 months. The major risk factor was neurofibromatosis type 1. Radiotherapy should no longer be the first treatment in these settings. When radiotherapy is unavoidable, regular screening for cerebral vasculopathy is mandatory, as preventive treatment is available.

Although phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) inhibits apoptosis and promotes the growth of some types of cells, it induces apoptosis in other cells. We evaluated the apoptotic effects of PMA on murine fibroblasts (L-929) that had been exposed to ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation at 312 nm, which promotes tumor cell growth.
