This study describes a series of skeletal lesions observed in a mid 16th century individual of an old adult female from the Early Colonial Period of northern coastal Peru. This fragmented skeleton revealed evidence of complex, active, and systemic chronic infection that included multiple pathological foci on the cranial vault, extensive pathological new bone formation in both arms, the sternum, ribs, left scapula, clavicles, femora, and fibulae, which was paralleled by extensive endosteal obliteration of affected long bone medullary cavities. Differential diagnosis included hematogenous osteom…

INTRODUCTION: Pectus excavatum is the most common congenital malformation of the anterior chest wall. The purpose of this study is to assess … mics when compared to healthy patients. The study also demonstrate that between the 4th and the 6th ribs there is the great dynamicity of the chest wall.

Mandibulofacial dysostosis with microcephaly (MFDM) is a sporadic malformation syndrome with severe craniofacial abnormalities, microcephaly, developmental delay, and dysmorphic features. Most cases of clinically diagnosed MFDM remain genetically unexplained, and to the best of our knowledge a total of 35 patients, 31 different mutations, 4 deletions, and 6 reports have been published. Our proband was born at 36 weeks gestation with microcephaly, microcrania, cleft palate, severe retrognathia, oral and pharyngeal dysphagia, bilateral proximal radioulnar synostosis, 11 thoracic ribs, abnormal m…

OBJECTIVES: Thanatophoric dysplasia (TD) is the most common form of lethal skeletal dysplasia. It is primarily an autosomal dominant disorder and is characterised by macrocephaly, a narrow thorax, short ribs, brachydactyly, and hypotonia. In addition to these core phenotypic features, TD type I involves micromelia with bowed femurs, while TD type II is characterised by micromelia with straight femurs and a moderate to severe clover-leaf deformity of the skull. Mutations in the FGFR3 gene are responsible for all cases of TD reported to date. The objective of the study here was to delineate furt…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical features and prognosis of bone metastases in colorectal cancer patients.
METHODS: The clinical data of 104 cases of colorectal cancer with bone metastasis were collected and retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: Among all the 104 patients included, 45 (43.3%) patients had multiple bone metastases, and 59 (56.7%) patients had single bone metastasis. Pelvis (46.1%) was the most common site, followed by thoracic vertebrae (41.3%), lumbar vertebrae (40.4%), sacral vertebrae (29.8%) and ribs (29.8%). One hundred and two patients (98.1%) were complicated with ot…

Brown tumor is a rare late-stage skeletal change caused by long-term stimulation of excess parathyroid hormone. It is not neoplastic, but a reparative cellular process. Common sites of brown tumor are the ribs, clavicle, long bones and pelvic girdle. Solitary maxillary brown tumor as initial presentation of primary hyperparathyroidism is rare; it is often accompanied by brown tumors of the other facial bones. Here, we present the first case of solitary maxillary brown tumor in a 29-year-old ethnic Chinese woman with initial presentation of a large tumor filling the left maxillary sinus. Underl…

The father's radiographs also showed prominent coarse striations, patchy metaphyseal sclerotic plaques, markedly increased bone density and cortical thickening of long bones, and sig…

Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by sterile pustules predominantly involving the palms and sol … fections. Further, arthralgia is also induced on the sternum, clavics, sacroiliac joints, and upper ribs following focal infections. This paper makes a focus on the triggering role of focal infection in the induction of extra-palmoplantar lesions as well as arthralgia (putulotic arthro-osteitis).

We report the case of a 66-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis type 1 who developed chest wall bleeding with severe scoliosis and a giant … ches of the internal thoracic artery secondary to the severe deformity of the thoracic vertebra and ribs. Commotio cordis is a clinic-pathological syndrome related to sudden death in young people involved in sports activities. It has been described, mainly, in athletes without previous cardiac anomalies who received a minor blow to the chest which produces ventricular fibrillation and cardiac arrest in the absence of structural damage to the ribs, sternum, or heart. There are few reported cases of commotio cordis associated with violent, non-sports related actions, which are commonly considered to be imprudent homicides. We present the case of a 20-year-old man, who was kicked in the chest during …

Glycogen synthase kinase-3beta (GSK-3beta) has integral roles in a variety of biological processes, including development, diabetes, and the progression of Alzheimer's disease. As such, a thorough understanding of GSK-3beta function will have a broad impact on human biology and therapeutics. Because GSK-3beta interacts with many different pathways, its specific developmental roles remain unclear. We have discovered a genetic requirement for GSK-3beta in midline development. Homozygous null mice display cleft palate, incomplete fusion of the ribs at the midline and bifid sternum as well as dela…

Ochratoxin A (OTA), a potent in vivo teratogen, has been tested in various laboratory animal species. Present investigation was conducted to … malies. Major skeletal defects were developmental defects in skull bones, sternebrae, vertebrae and ribs. The gestational days 6 and 7 were found to be the most critical for the induction of teratogenicity in rats. Single oral dose of 2.75 mg/kg body weight OTA was found to be the minimum effective teratogenic dose in pregnant Wistar rats.
