A contemporary framework of health equity applied to gynecologic cancer care: A Society of Gynecologic Oncology evidenced-based review.

Health disparities are defined as the preventable difference in the burden of disease, injury, and violence, or opportunity to achieve optimal health that socially disadvantaged populations experience compared to the population as a whole. Disparities in incidence and cancer outcomes for women with gynecologic malignancies have been well described particularly for American women of Black race. The etiology of these disparities has been tied to socio-economics, cultural, educational and genetic factors. While access to high quality treatment has been primarily linked to survival from cervical a

Occupational violence in an Australian healthcare setting: implications for managers.

Occupational violence is a worldwide, multifaceted problem affecting all industries, including healthcare. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of the experiences of 158 allied health professionals, 135 doctors, and 1229 nurses working in a rural area in eastern Australia. Response rates were 72 percent for allied health professionals and 62 percent for general practitioners (GPs) and nurses. Proportionately more nurses experienced occupational violence than did allied health providers and GPs. During the past 12 months (August 2001 to July 2002), 68 percent of nurses, compared with 47 percen

Telemedicine and human African trypanosomiasis in Angola: Local insights into challenges and opportunities for remote health delivery.

OBJECTIVES: Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), or sleeping sickness, is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) endemic in rural Angola. Although telemedicine can improve healthcare access and coordination, its absence from HAT care highlights gaps in achieving World Health Organization goals for digital health equity and NTD control by 2030. To identify the challenges and opportunities for the local implementation of telemedicine in HAT care. METHODS: A mixed-methods study was conducted at the Instituto de Combate e Controlo das Tripanossomiases, a specialized unit of the Angolan Ministry of He

The context of informal abortions in rural Ghana.

AIMS: This qualitative study explores the context of unsafe abortion in rural Ghana with the aim of identifying areas that should be considered when operationalizing abortion-related reproductive health strategies. METHODS: Data come from eleven narratives about planned or attempted abortions and seven narratives of abortion-related deaths. These individual data are supplemented by data from ten focus group discussions. RESULTS: Communities describe abortions as dangerous and, if they become public knowledge, shameful. Despite this, abortions were understood as necessary for some women in so

Feasibility of measuring compliance to annual ivermectin treatment in the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control.

The African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) sponsors annual distribution of ivermectin to control onchocerciasis. Ivermectin should be taken annually by 65% of community members for a number of years to eliminate the disease as a public health problem. While many community coverage surveys have been undertaken during project monitoring, individual compliance could not be studied until several annual rounds of distribution had occurred. This paper reports on the efforts to determine whether adequate records could be found to enable a compliance study. A step-down process from projec

A simple index to measure hygiene behaviours.

BACKGROUND: Spot checks are becoming a popular method to assess hygiene behaviours; however, little is known about their repeatability or predictability. We evaluated the within-household repeatability of hygiene indices created from spot checks and their ability to predict incidence of diarrhoea in young Guatemalan children. METHODS: We observed hygiene behaviours in 588 households in four rural Guatemalan communities over 36 months. Four indices related to drinking water (DWI; score = 0-3), food (FI; score = 0-3), personal hygiene (PHI; score = 0-3), and domestic household hygiene (DHI; sco

The problems of a social survey in epidemiology: an experience from a Zambian rural community.

A socio-economic study of 1097 people was carried out between November and December 1979. Demographic data and other health characteristics were obtained by census of the entire study population. Interviews covered disease awareness, perceived morbidity, health-care utilization, knowledge, attitudes and practices; all adults aged 15 years and above were interviewed 2 weeks before physical examinations were made. Age and literacy level were found to have no effect on the people's health-seeking behaviour in Kabinga. The results of this social survey failed to reveal the real practices of the co

Manitoba's Provincial Travel Nurse Team: A Unique Staffing Model for Nurses.

The growing demand in providing healthcare services combined with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare staffing has created a situation where the supply of available nurses is not keeping up with the demand with increasing competition for limited resources. Rural and remote locations face unique challenges in recruiting and retaining skilled staff. Manitoba's Provincial Travel Nurse Team (PTNT) was created as an alternative staffing model with flexible employment options to retain nurses in the public health system. The PTNT's early success has demonstrated that this model can su

Mathematical Analyses on the Effects of Control Measures for a Waterborne Disease Model with Socioeconomic Conditions.

Waterborne diseases are present major health problems to humanity especially in rural communities where many individuals belong to the lower socioeconomic classes (SECs). The impacts of introducing waterborne disease control measures for such communities are investigated by considering a waterborne disease model. The model is extended by introducing treatment of infected individuals and water purification as control measures. The possible benefits of considering these control measures for the various SECs are investigated. Further analyses show how different degrees of control impact the rate

Screening for Trypanosoma brucei gambiense antibodies with the Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT). Effect of age and previous treatment.

This paper reports on some of the findings of a longitudinal multi-round investigation into the predictive power of early signs and symptoms of human African trypanosomiasis caused by T.b. gambiense, in the Rural Health Zone of Kasongo (Maniema, Zaire). It assesses the importance of the effect of age and a history of previously treated sleeping sickness on serological positivity as measured by the Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT), used as a screening test. The impact of including age and a history of previous sleeping sickness as part of the screening process is discussed in terms of …

The Burden of Obesity-Related Cancers in Oklahoma: Trends, Demographics, and Spatial Patterns.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a growing public health crisis in the United States, with over 70% of adults classified as overweight or obese. It has been associated with multiple health conditions, including at least 13 types of cancer. Despite this, awareness of the obesity-cancer link remains low, with only 53% of Americans aware of it as of 2019. Understanding the epidemiology of obesity-related cancers is critical, particularly in high-obesity states like Oklahoma. OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence and trends of obesity-related cancers in Oklahoma, focusing on demographic, geographic, and socio
