Immunitary Life in COVID-19 Times: Understandings, Practices and Experiences Among Members of Marginalised Social Groups.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the concepts of human immunity and immune responsiveness have received new attention. This article reports findings from a project that interviewed members of four marginalised subgroups of the Australian population with experience of blood-borne viruses, other chronic health conditions and social stigma about how they understand their immunity and in what practices they have engaged to strengthen their immune responsiveness since the outbreak of COVID. In participants' accounts, there were echoes of long-held concepts about immunity as self-defence against inva

Urban Homelessness in California: A Multicity Analysis of Structural Constraints and Policy Implementation.

Across California, the seven largest cities-Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Sacramento, and Long Beach-carry a disproportionate share of the state's homelessness crisis, even though they operate under the same statewide policy framework. Each city's homelessness system reflects its own history, political climate, and housing market conditions, and this study shows that a common set of structural forces especially severe housing scarcity, fragmented behavioral-health systems, and uneven local capacity shapes homelessness across these urban areas while producing differen

Tree of Life Groups for Children and Young People With Long-Term Medical Conditions and Their Parents Led by Pre-Qualification Psychology Staff.

The Tree of Life group (Ncube, 2006) was designed to help children, young people (CYP), and adults who have experienced hard times or trauma to build resilience, restore hope, and connect with their strengths and social histories. A small number of publications have demonstrated a positive impact with CYP with long-term medical conditions (LTCs) (e.g., Casdagli et al., 2017) who are more likely to experience psychosocial challenges. In the context of increasing workforce pressures, the current study aimed to test if the positive results from previous studies could be replicated (1) with CYP's

Event-related potential evidence for memory prioritization modulated by social labels.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether semantic activation induced by social labels modulates memory prioritization during encoding, as indexed by event-related potentials (ERPs). Specifically, we examined semantic processing and attentional allocation during encoding to identify the stage at which memory enhancement arises. METHODS: The experiment consisted of a semantic categorization task during encoding followed by a surprise free-recall test. Participants were assigned to one of two task conditions. In task 1, they judged whether a word belonged to the self category or to non-self categories

Wait one hot minute: what exactly is cognitive behavioral therapy for menopause?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We briefly review the literature on cognitive behavioral therapy for menopause, characterizing these interventions within their proper social cognitive context, and situating them within the broader research literature on cognitive behavioral therapy approaches. Furthermore, we highlight critical knowledge gaps and underscore the need for targeted next steps in research. RECENT FINDINGS: Unlike menopause hormone therapy, traditional cognitive behavioral therapy for menopause protocols are not necessarily designed to reduce the frequency or severity of vasomotor symptoms (e.

Sustainability assessment of municipal biowaste nutrient recovery under data scarcity: an integrated decision-support framework.

Sustainability assessment of municipal biowaste treatment pathways for nutrient recovery is often hindered by limited and uncertain data. Existing studies provide valuable evidence on individual treatment processes, but knowledge remains fragmented across technologies and sustainability dimensions, making cross-pathway comparison difficult. This study aims to comparatively assess municipal biowaste nutrient recovery pathways under data-scarce conditions by developing an integrated decision-support framework. In the first phase, a systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted to identify rep

Bridging the gap: health equity in women's urologic care across rural settings.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Health equity has emerged as a priority in urology, as disparities in access to care and health outcomes are driven by social, structural, and geographic factors. Women living in rural communities represent a particularly vulnerable population, given the high prevalence of chronic urologic conditions that impact quality of life and require longitudinal management. Conditions such as urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, recurrent urinary tract infections, and pelvic organ prolapse are common among women yet remain under-recognized and undertreated in rural settings. REC

Psychosocial work environment and fertility intention among wage workers: a cross-sectional analysis of the general working population in Korea.

South Korea has the lowest total fertility rate globally, and policies focused on economic incentives have failed to reverse this trend. Workplace conditions may influence fertility decisions, yet the role of the work environment remains underexplored. We examined associations between psychosocial working conditions and fertility intention among Korean wage workers. This cross-sectional study used data from the sixth wave of the Korean Work, Sleep, and Health Study (2025), including 1,249 paid employees aged <50 yr. Fertility intention was assessed as a binary outcome. Occupational factors inc

Assessing pedestrian responses to autonomous and personal mobility robots in crowded public spaces.

Robots increasingly share spaces with people, supporting delivery services and mobility for the aging populations, yet their ability to share space comfortably lacks understanding and benchmarks for designers and policy-makers. We compared human-robot (HRI) and human-human (HHI) interactions across four real-world crowd datasets spanning Europe, North America, and Asia, using a unified pipeline to detect interactions, stratify by crowd density, and model pedestrian behavior. Local motion patterns (speed, acceleration, and jerk) remained closely matched between HRI and HHI across all densities.

Interplay Between Valvular Heart Disease and Psychiatric Disorders: Mechanisms, Manifestations, and Management.

Valvular heart disease (VHD) and psychiatric disorders are each highly prevalent, yet their co-occurrence is underappreciated in clinical practice. Patients carrying both diagnoses present particular management challenges because the pathologic relationship between the two conditions is bidirectional and mechanistically diverse. This narrative review examines the mechanistic, clinical, and therapeutic interplay between VHD and psychiatric illness, with the aim of providing cardiologists and psychiatrists with an integrated framework for recognition and management. We conducted a systematic sea

Diagnostic Delay in Desquamative Gingivitis: An Observational Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: Non-plaque-induced gingivitis encompasses a heterogeneous group of conditions as defined in the 2017 Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions. Recognition is challenging and often leads to diagnostic delay. This study aimed to evaluate diagnostic delay in a cohort of patients with non-plaque-induced gingivitis presenting as desquamative gingivitis, and to identify associated factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this observational study, patients were recruited from public and private oral medicine centres. Participants completed a questionnaire collecti

The relationship between stress and personal growth among women with normal and at-risk pregnancy: the role of rumination and social support.

Pregnancy is a significant period in women's lives, especially for first-time mothers, that may arouse stress, but concurrently can trigger an experience of personal growth. This study examines the association between perceived stress during pregnancy and personal growth among first-time mothers, exploring the role of intrusive and reflective rumination, and partner and family support in this association, comparing women with normal and at-risk pregnancies. 708 pregnant women in their third trimester responded to self-report questionnaires assessing stress, personal growth, event-related rumin

Alcohol use disorders.

Alcohol use disorders consist of conditions characterised by compulsive heavy alcohol use and loss of control over alcohol intake. Alcohol use disorders are some of the most prevalent mental disorders globally, with higher prevalence in high-income countries and lower prevalence in low-income countries. The recent COVID-19 pandemic was associated with an increase in fully alcohol-attributable mortality, in part triggered by alcohol-specific interactions with stress. Despite their high prevalence, alcohol use disorders remain undertreated, even though there are scientifically established and co

Human development, inequality, and their associations with brain structure across 29 countries.

BACKGROUND: The macro-social and environmental conditions in which people live, such as the level of a country's development or inequality, are associated with brain-related disorders. However, the relationship between these systemic environmental factors and the brain remains unclear. We aimed to determine the association between the level of development and inequality of a country and the brain structure of healthy adults. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study pooling brain imaging (T1-based) data from 145 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies in 7,962 healthy adults (4,110 women

Parental Experiences of Receiving a Rare Genetic Disease Diagnosis for Their Child on Diagnosis Day.

Literature exploring the experiences of parents of children with rare genetic conditions on "Diagnosis Day," the day a diagnosis is given, is limited. We created a survey to further explore these experiences. Parents of children with rare genetic conditions 18 years or younger were recruited through rare disease organizations and social media. Seven hundred and seventeen participants, representing 229 rare diseases, met the inclusion criteria. Most parents received their child's diagnosis in person. Other parents received the diagnosis by phone or telehealth. Most parents (73%) were satisfied

Epidemiology, Prevention, and Clinical Management of Allergic Rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a widespread chronic condition caused by immune responses involving immunoglobulin E (IgE) when exposed to airborne allergens. It frequently coexists with conditions such as asthma and eye inflammation and represents a major public health issue due to its significant burden and associated disabilities across the globe. Key contributing factors include exposure to airborne or workplace-related allergens and hereditary predispositions. AR negatively impacts daily life, including social interactions, academic performance, and productivity at work, while also leading to c

Development of a Methodology for Measuring Oxytocin in Feces: Insights from a Preliminary Study in Captive Lions (Panthera leo).

Oxytocin (OT) has emerged as a central focus in stress regulation and animal welfare research. While commonly measured in blood, saliva, and urine, its presence in feces remains unexplored. Fecal OT (fOT) could be highly valuable for wildlife studies, where direct handling is impractical. This study explored OT detection in feces using lions (Panthera leo) as a model species. The objectives included developing a reliable fOT extraction protocol, describing baseline fOT patterns in captive lions, and evaluating its relationship with fecal glucocorticoid metabolites (fGM) under non-stressful con
