Salience Network in Autism: preliminary results on functional connectivity analysis in resting state.

The literature suggests that alterations in functional connectivity (FC) of the Salience Network (SN) may contribute to the manifestation of some clinical features of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The SN plays a key role in integrating external sensory information with internal emotional and bodily information. An atypical FC of this network could explain some symptomatic features of ASD such as difficulties in self-awareness and emotion processing and provide new insights into the neurobiological basis of autism. Using the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange II we investigated the resting-st

Approaches to Engaging Men During Primary Healthcare Encounters: A scoping review.

Gender-responsive healthcare is critical to advancing men's health given that masculinities intersect with other social determinants to impact help-seeking, engagement with primary healthcare, and patient outcomes. A scoping review was undertaken with the aim to synthesize gender-responsive approaches used by healthcare providers (HCPs) to engage men with primary healthcare. MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO databases were searched for articles published between 2000 and February 2024. Titles and abstracts for 15,659 citations were reviewed, and 97 articles met the inclusion criteria. Data

Support factors contributing to successful start-up businesses by young entrepreneurs in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Unemployment and restricted work opportunities for youth are enduring social challenges that affect health, well-being, and quality of life, especially in low- to middle-income countries. When considering the advantages associated with work as a determinant of health, unemployment is understood to contribute to occupational injustice. However, self-employment, hailed the solution to youth unemployment, is often necessity-driven, precarious in nature and restricted by the low success rate of business start-ups. OBJECTIVE: Research was undertaken to explore factors perceived to cont

"It shouldn't be just hush-hush": A qualitative community-based study of menstrual health communication among women in Philadelphia.

INTRODUCTION: Although menstruation is a natural biological process, many people feel embarrassed of their menses and struggle to discuss it. To mitigate menstrual communication stigma, it is necessary to first elucidate communication experiences and perceptions. Thus, we qualitatively explore menstrual communication among cisgender women who menstruate and their family, friends, healthcare providers, and community. METHODOLOGY: In partnership with No More Secrets (NMS), a Philadelphia menstrual health non-profit, we conducted a community-based participatory research (CBPR) project in Fall 20

Sibling bullying victimization and subjective well-being among children across 13 countries: The mediating roles of perceived social support and the moderating role of uncertainty avoidance culture.

BACKGROUND: While sibling bullying victimization has been recognized as a significant factor detrimentally impacting children's subjective well-being, the underlying mechanisms have yet to be fully elucidated. OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to investigate the potential mediating role of perceived social support, encompassing support from family, friend, teacher, and neighbor, as well as the moderating influence of uncertainty avoidance culture. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A sample of 19,328 children was obtained from Wave Three of Children's Worlds: International Survey of Children's Well-being i

Socially constructed beliefs and the uptake of the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

BACKGROUND: The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) provides automatic access to subsidized dental care for eligible Australian children, but uptake is low. As cost is not a factor, socially constructed perceptions, which may be subscribed to without personal experience, were explored as potential barriers. METHODS: Two studies with parents (child <18 years) were conducted. In Study one (N=317) participants completed a free-response task eliciting socially constructed perceptions about the dentist. These were factor-analysed in Study two (N=231), and the salience of these perceptions in rel

A Qualitative Study on Young Men's Experiences of Intentional Weight-Gain.

This qualitative study investigated how young men perceive their body image and experiences of purposively gaining weight, and what these reveal about broader sociocultural meanings around food, consumption and male body image. The participants in this study were a subsample of men participating in the 'GlasVEGAS' study which examined the effect of weight-gain and weight loss on metabolism, fitness and disease risk in young adult men. Twenty-three qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with thirteen men (mean age 23 years) at GlasVEGAS baseline (n = 10) and weight-gain (6-week)

Psychiatric disorders, rumination, and metacognitions in patients with type D personality and coronary heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in patients with both coronary heart disease (CHD) and type D personality, and whether these patients may benefit from psychotherapy that modifies metacognitive beliefs implicated in disorder maintenance. This study explored prevalence rates among these patients and associations between type D characteristics, rumination and metacognitions. METHODS: Forty-seven consecutive patients with CHD who scored positive for type D personality were included in this pre-planned study. Participants underwent structured clinical

Behavioral profiling in children and adolescents with Malan syndrome.

Malan syndrome (MALNS) is an ultra-rare genetic disorder caused by heterozygous chromosomal microdeletions involving the 19p13.2 region or loss-of-function variants in the NFIX gene. It is characterized by specific phenotypical features, intellectual disability (ID), and limitations in adaptive functioning and behavioral problems. In a previous work, we defined the cognitive, adaptive, linguistic and visuomotor ability profiles in a group of 15 MALNS individuals, providing quantitative data from standardized evaluations. Here, we further extend the characterization of MALNS by analyzing the be

The gendered violence of injecting-related stigma among relatively affluent, suburban women who inject drugs.

INTRODUCTION: In honouring the legacy of Jude Byrne's life-long advocacy for women and mothers who use drugs, this paper presents a case study of a group of women about whom we know little about and hear even less from: women who inject drugs in relatively affluent suburbs. METHODS: Based on a 2020 qualitative study of people who inject drugs in an affluent area of Sydney known as 'The Beaches', we use in-depth interview data to thematically explore the lived experiences of gendered stigma among women who inject drugs. RESULTS: Even when women occupy the 'ideal' social position in terms of c

Perspectives of homeless veterans living with substance use disorders (SUD) and mental illness.

Upon returning home from the military, America's veterans face complex challenges such as homelessness and substance use disorders (SUD). Veterans who have experienced SUDs and homelessness are more likely to struggle with depression and suicidal behaviors. This study aims to understand homeless veterans' lived experiences of their everyday life and social interactions. We used semi-structured interviews to conduct a phenomenological study of 14 homeless veterans with known SUDs living in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. A Social-Ecological Model (SEM) was used to create themes
