Managing terror: differences between Jews and Arabs in Israel.

Using telephone surveys, we examined exposure to terror, coping, and mental health response in randomly selected Jewish-Israelis (n = 100) and Arab-Israelis (n = 100) living in five Israeli cities affected by terrorism. Jewish-Israelis and Arab-Israelis were randomly selected for study participation and completed telephone surveys in May 2002, following an extended string of terror attacks and hostilities. Although terrorism is designed to target Jewish-Israelis, the rates of exposure were similar in the two groups. Arab-Israelis reported using a wider array of coping strategies, yet also endo

Participation in prevention programs for dating violence: beliefs about relationship violence and intention to participate.

This study utilizes the Health Belief Model (HBM) to examine the factors related to the intention to participate in prevention programming for dating violence. Perceptions of susceptibility to future violence and the benefits of prevention programming appear to be the strongest predictors of participation in prevention programs. Perceptions of the severity of dating violence do not appear to be related to intentions to participate. There were no differences in intention between those reporting psychological or physical violence in their dating relationship, although some of the HBM factors wer

Disrupted lives, fragmented care: illness experiences of criminalized women.

Thirty-three women recently released from a Massachusetts correctional facility were included in a qualitative study, carried out between January and July 2007, in which semi-structured, open-ended, individual interviews were conducted. The women described lives repeatedly disrupted, typically by sexual and physical violence, and then again by homelessness, joblessness, bad relationships, loss of their children, legal troubles, fractured physical and mental health, and fragmented medical attention by a large, disjointed variety of providers and facilities. This article argues that rather than

Supportive parenting moderates the effect of discrimination upon anger, hostile view of relationships, and violence among African American boys.

Studies have shown that exposure to discrimination increases the probability that African American adolescents will engage in delinquent behavior, especially acts of violence. The present study extended this research by examining the extent to which supportive parenting buffers a youth from these deleterious consequences of discrimination. Analyses based upon two waves of data from a sample of 332 African American adolescent males and their caretakers supported this hypothesis. Further the results indicated that there are two avenues whereby supportive parenting reduces the probability that di

The stability and impact of environmental factors on substance use and problems after adolescent outpatient treatment for cannabis abuse or dependence.

Because alcohol or other drug use following adolescent substance abuse treatment is common, understanding mediators of posttreatment outcome could help improve treatment interventions. The authors conducted path analyses based on data from 552 adolescents (aged 12-18; 82% male) with cannabis abuse or dependence who participated in outpatient treatment. The analysis used the Family Conflict and Cohesion subscales, from the Family Environment Scale, and several scales and indices from the Global Appraisal of Individual Needs. Family conflict, family cohesion, and social support indirectly predic

"Stress" and coronary heart disease: psychosocial risk factors.

An Expert Working Group of the National Heart Foundation of Australia undertook a review of systematic reviews of the evidence relating to major psychosocial risk factors to assess whether there are independent associations between any of the factors and the development and progression of coronary heart disease (CHD), or the occurrence of acute cardiac events. The expert group concluded that (i) there is strong and consistent evidence of an independent causal association between depression, social isolation and lack of quality social support and the causes and prognosis of CHD; and (ii) there

Contextualizing the effects of childhood sexual abuse on adult self- and social functioning: an attachment theory perspective.

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective survey study explored the hypothesis that multiple maltreatment and loss experiences in early childhood would interfere with the formation of secure attachments, creating (1) an increased vulnerability to childhood sexual abuse (CSA), and (2) adult problems in self- and social functioning. METHOD: Data were collected from 687 undergraduates on an urban, commuter campus. They were analyzed by means of between group (individuals with and without CSA histories) and within group (individuals with CSA histories) path analytic models. RESULTS: The number of maltreatme

Adolescent risk factors and the prediction of persistent alcohol and drug use into adulthood.

Adolescence is a time of heightened risk for relatively intensive alcohol and other drug use behaviors. However, heavy use is often "adolescence-limited," giving way to moderation or cessation in adulthood. We examined individual differences in risk factors at age 18 that were predictive of alternative alcohol and drug use trajectories from adolescence to adulthood. Data were collected prospectively on four occasions from participants in the Rutgers Health and Human Development Project. Subsets of individuals representing three prototypical trajectories of (1) consistently low alcohol and drug

Depression and physical and social functioning in old age.

The relationships between physical and social functioning and depression in old age are described. Findings from a longitudinal study carried out in 1984 on a population aged 60 years or over in the town of Ahtäri in Finland give evidence that disturbed physical and social functioning can predispose individuals to depression. Having poor emotional relations with one's wife predicted depression within five years among the initially non-depressed men, and not living alone among the women. From a preventive viewpoint, the independence of the elderly and social roles that support self-esteem in ol

Men and women aging differently.

Gender differences in health, socioeconomic status, and social resources persist into advanced old age and result in variations in life trajectories and responses to the challenges of longevity. The implications of these differences are examined in a sample of 150 community-dwelling white men and women. The majority are women, a high proportion of whom are unmarried, living alone, functionally impaired, and have reduced financial resources. Men, in contrast, have fewer decrements, they are more independent, and they exercise more control over their environment. However, their well-being may be

Incorporating HIV education and counseling into routine prenatal care: a program model.

This article reports how a prenatal clinic in a major urban teaching hospital has developed and integrated an HIV education and counseling program into routine prenatal care. The patient population served are predominantly minority women living in an inner-city community that has been disproportionately affected by the AIDS epidemic. Implementation of the patient program has required training and support for all professional staff. Staff training served as a foundation for this comprehensive patient program, which has reached all prenatal patients regardless of risk behavior. The program has s

Predictors of burnout in professional and paraprofessional nurses working in hospitals and nursing homes.

Burnout is a phenomenon in which the cumulative effects of a stressful work environment gradually overwhelm the defenses of staff members, forcing them to psychologically withdraw. To understand the experience of professional and paraprofessional nurses suffering from burnout requires a close examination of the environments in which they function. This study examined interpersonal, intrapersonal and situational factors expected to contribute to the six dimensions of burnout among nursing staff who worked in acute care and long-term care health facilities. The sample included 312 professional a

Adolescent psychopathic traits and adverse environments: Associations with socially adaptive outcomes.

Researchers have suggested that psychopathic traits among adults may be, at least in part, an adaptive and/or a learned response for securing socially adaptive outcomes in adverse environments, but there is a lack of developmental evidence supporting this hypothesis among adolescents. Therefore, we examined the indirect links from self-perceived adverse environments (parental neglect, socioeconomic status, school competition, neighborhood violence) to evolutionarily relevant social outcomes (social power, dating behavior) through psychopathic traits. A community sample of 396 adolescents compl

The Disqualification of Positive Social Outcomes Scale: a novel assessment of a long-recognized cognitive tendency in social anxiety disorder.

Socially anxious individuals frequently tend to disqualify positive social experiences and outcomes. However, no formal measure of Disqualificationof Positive Social Outcome (DPSO)-related tendencies has yet been reported. The purpose of the present series of studies was to develop the Disqualification ofPositive Social Outcomes Scale (DPSOS) and examine its psychometric profile across several independent samples, including a large (n=585) undergraduate sample; a clinical sample of individuals diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (n=14), and a demographically-equivalent sample of non-sociall

Psychometric validation of a monitoring-blunting measure for social anxiety disorder: the coping styles questionnaire for social situations (CSQSS).

The purpose of this investigation was to conduct a psychometric validation of the Coping Styles Questionnaire for Social Situations (CSQSS). The CSQSS was developed to measure monitoring and blunting coping styles in social situations based on Miller's conceptualization of how individuals cope with threat-related information. Study 1 evaluated the content validity of the CSQSS monitoring and blunting items. Study 2 examined factor structure, reliability, and construct validity of the CSQSS in a sample of 443 college students. Evidence supported the content and face validity of the CSQSS. In ad

Mitigating the affective and cognitive consequences of social exclusion: an integrative data analysis of seven social disconnection interventions.

BACKGROUND: Being socially excluded has detrimental effects, with prolonged exclusion linked to loneliness and social isolation. Social disconnection interventions that do not require direct support actions (e.g., "how can I help?") offer promise in mitigating the affective and cognitive consequences of social exclusion. We examine how various social disconnection interventions involving friends and unknown peers might mitigate social exclusion by buffering (intervening before) and by promoting recovery (intervening after). METHODS: We present an integrative data analysis (IDA) of five studie

Advancing Heart Failure Care Through Disease Management Programs: A Comprehensive Framework to Improve Outcomes.

Heart failure (HF) is a major global health challenge, characterized by high morbidity, mortality, and frequent hospital readmissions. Despite the advent of guideline-directed medical therapies (GDMTs), the burden of HF continues to grow, necessitating a shift toward comprehensive, multidisciplinary care models. Heart Failure Disease Management Programs (HF-DMPs) have emerged as structured frameworks that integrate evidence-based medical therapy, patient education, telemonitoring, and support for social determinants of health to optimize outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. This review outlin

Factors Involved in Posttraumatic Growth in Mothers Experiencing Fetal and Infant Death.

Factors associated with posttraumatic growth (PTG) are investigated in mothers who have suffered fetal or infant death. Mothers (N = 66) completed the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI; Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996), the Core Beliefs Inventory (CBI; Cann et al., 2010), and answered questions about the severity of their loss, age of fetus or infant, time since loss, social support, finding meaning, and involvement in loss-related behavior. Results indicate a greatly traumatic loss (M = 4.41), a great degree of core belief disruption (M = 3.57), and a moderate level of PTG (M = 2.80). CBI scores
