The radiological differential diagnosis of polypoid filling defects is more difficult in the caecum than in other parts of the colon. A prominent, but normal, ileo-caecal valve, faeces or an inverted appendix stump produce polypoid filling defects on barium enema far more frequently than diseases of the ileo-caecal region. Eighteen patients with lupus erythematosus (LE) and pleural effusions were evaluated. Fourteen patients had lupus pleuritis and four had pleural effusions of other etiologies. Seventy-five patients received 80 Medtronic-Hall valve prostheses during a 24-month period at the Beilinson Medical Center. The mean age was 50 years and the majority of patients had rheumatic heart disease. All operations were elective. There were 4 early and 2 late deaths (8%). Serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (SACE) was measured in 56 patients with sarcoidosis within three months after diagnosis. Serial analyses were performed in 42 patients, who were followed for two months to one year. SACE was elevated in 49 (70%) of the patients at some time during the period of observation. Erythema nodosum (EN) was present in 14 patients. Only one out of seven had elevated SACE during EN, but four months later SACE was elevated in all 14.
