Revisiting the etiological aspects of dissociative identity disorder: a biopsychosocial perspective.

Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a chronic post-traumatic disorder where developmentally stressful events in childhood, including abuse, emotional neglect, disturbed attachment, and boundary violations are central and typical etiological factors. Familial, societal, and cultural factors may give rise to the trauma and/or they may influence the expression of DID. Memory and the construction of self-identity are cognitive processes that appear markedly and centrally disrupted in DID and are related to its etiology. Enduring decoupling of psychological modes may create separate senses of s

Unique relations among anxiety sensitivity factors and anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation.

Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is composed of three lower-order dimensions, cognitive concerns, physical concerns, and social concerns. We examined the relations between AS dimensions using a more adequate assessment of subscales (ASI-3) than has previously been used, and measures of anxiety and mood disorders as well as suicidal ideation in a sample of 256 (M age = 37.10 years, SD = 16.40) treatment-seeking individuals using structural equation modeling. AS cognitive concerns was uniquely associated with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), major depressive disor

Temporal parameters of post-stress prophylactic glucose treatment in rats.

Acute trauma can lead to life-long changes in susceptibility to psychiatric disease, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Rats given free access to a concentrated glucose solution for 24 h beginning immediately after trauma failed to show stress-related pathology in the learned helplessness model of PTSD and comorbid major depression. We assessed effective dosing and temporal constraints of the glucose intervention in three experiments. We exposed 120 male Sprague-Dawley rats to 100, 1 mA, 3-15 s, inescapable and unpredictable electric tail shocks (over a 110-min period) or simple re

A longitudinal study on clinically relevant self-reported depression, anxiety and acute stress features among Italian community-dwelling adults during the COVID-19 related lockdown: Evidence of a predictive role for baseline dysfunctional personality dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Although necessary for public health, quarantine has been documented to cause post-traumatic stress symptoms, anxiety, and depression. We designed the present longitudinal study to evaluate the psychological impact of quarantine in Italian community-dwelling adult participants. METHODS: A sample of 304 Italian community-dwelling adult participants (75.7% female; mean age = 35.28 years) was administered self-reported measures of depression, anxiety and acute stress symptoms at the beginning and at the end of the lockdown. Potential predictors of clinically relevant symptoms at the

Chromodomain Y-like Protein-Mediated Histone Crotonylation Regulates Stress-Induced Depressive Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder is a prevalent and life-threatening illness in modern society. The susceptibility to major depressive disorder is profoundly influenced by environmental factors, such as stressful lifestyle or traumatic events, which could impose maladaptive transcriptional program through epigenetic regulation. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we examined the role of histone crotonylation, a novel type of histone modification, and chromodomain Y-like protein (CDYL), a crotonyl-coenzyme A hydratase and histone methyllysine reader, in this

Distinct and shared neurobiological patterns in PTSD and CPTSD: evidence from resting-state fMRI.

BACKGROUND: Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) is a diagnosis newly introduced in the ICD-11. However, its status as a distinct disorder from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) remains debated, and there is a notable lack of neuroimaging evidence derived from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to clarify this distinction. This study aimed to address this gap by providing integrated neuroimaging evidence to elucidate their unique and shared neural bases. METHODS: By collecting resting-state functional brain imaging data from patients with PTSD, CPTSD,

Behavioral and inflammatory changes in rats induced by a three-hit stress model: Implications for psychiatric disorders.

Many aspects of the impact of childhood trauma remain unknown, such as the age at which individuals are most vulnerable to trauma, whether traumatic experiences have more severe and lasting effects when experienced early in life, and whether early life trauma causes psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and major depressive disorder (MDD) that persist over time or evolve into other disorders. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the impact of traumatic experiences in childhood on susceptibility to mood disorders in adulthood, particularly MDD. Animal models were used to address these questio

Mental health of children held at a United States immigration detention center.

Rationale; Children held in immigration detention may be at risk for mental health disorders due to the impacts of pre-migration factors, including exposure to violence, their displacement from their home countries, their journey between countries, and the conditions of their detention. Limited research has demonstrated high rates of clinical depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety disorders among detained immigrant children. Objective; In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the mental health of children held at a US immigration detention center over two months in mi

Parental PTSD, adverse parenting and child attachment in a refugee sample.

In contrast with traumatic experiences, there is a dearth of studies on the link between trauma symptoms, disconnected (frightened, threatening and dissociative) parenting behavior, extremely insensitive parenting behavior and child attachment. This study extends previous work on the impact of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on families by studying the unique contribution of disconnected and extremely insensitive parenting behavior on child attachment in a highly traumatized sample of 68 asylum seekers and refugees and their children (18-42 months). The results show that parental symptoms

Anger-associated panic attacks in Cambodian refugees with PTSD; a multiple baseline examination of clinical data.

Despite the increasing recognition of the importance of anger as a key aspect of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the presence of anger-induced panic attacks has been understudied in traumatized groups. The present investigation determines the prevalence of anger-associated panic attacks among Cambodian refugees suffering from PTSD. Specific characteristics of these episodes that were examined included frequency, symptoms, and cognitions (in particular, fear of death from bodily dysfunction). In a survey of 100 Khmer patients suffering PTSD, 58% reported anger-associated panic attacks in

Maladaptive trauma appraisals mediate the relation between attachment anxiety and PTSD symptom severity.

OBJECTIVE: In a large sample of community-dwelling older adults with histories of exposure to a broad range of traumatic events, we examined the extent to which appraisals of traumatic events mediate the relations between insecure attachment styles and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity. METHOD: Participants completed an assessment of adult attachment, in addition to measures of PTSD symptom severity, event centrality, event severity, and ratings of the A1 PTSD diagnostic criterion for the potentially traumatic life event that bothered them most at the time of the study. The relationship between trauma and beliefs about hearing voices: a study of psychiatric and non-psychiatric voice hearers.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive models suggest that distress associated with auditory hallucinations is best understood in terms of beliefs about voices. What is less clear is what factors govern such beliefs. This study aimed to explore the way in which traumatic life events contribute towards beliefs about voices and any associated distress. METHOD: The difference in the nature and prevalence of traumatic life events and associated psychological sequelae was compared in two groups of voice hearers: psychiatric voice hearers with predominantly negative beliefs about voices (PVH) and non-psychiatric vo

Anticholinergic drug atropine diminishes newly formed fear memory in male rats.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition which is triggered shortly after experiencing traumatic events. PTSD is complicated by the fact that people with PTSD often develop additional disorders such as phobias, addiction, depression, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Beta-adrenergic and cholinergic system both are involved in memory formation as well as in emotional response associated with memory. It is reported that the administration of beta-adrenergic and cholinergic antagonist results in the impairment in memory formation. Here, we examined the potential of bet

Anxiety disorders, PTSD, and risk of first-ever stroke: A meta-analysis of 11 million participants.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) involve chronic fear and stress-related dysregulation that may increase vascular risk, yet their association with stroke and stroke type has not been systematically evaluated. We aimed to quantify associations between anxiety and related disorders and stroke risk, distinguishing clinical diagnoses from self-reported symptom-based measures. METHODS: Databases were searched until 1 January 2026. We included longitudinal studies defining anxiety disorders, OCD or PTSD using DSM/ICD-based clinical
