Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a common anatomical variant in the adult circulation. It is a channel allowing communication between the left and right atria and is a remnant of the foetal circulation. RATIONALE: Cerebral microbleeds are lesions that appear as round low signal intensity areas with a diameter of 2-5 mm on gradient echo T2-weighted sequence magnetic resonance imaging.
