This study clarified the relationship between right ventricular (RV) overload and contraction of the interventricular septum using two-dimensional echocardiography. The hemodynamic consequences of neonatal polycythemic hyperviscosity and the effects of partial exchange transfusion were evaluated in 13 infants. Mean (+/- SD) venous hematocrit was 72% +/- 2.5%. We measured left ventricular ejection fraction by radionuclide angiocardiography at rest and during graded exercise in eight thyrotoxic children. Five patients were reassessed after return to a clinically euthyroid state. A patient with Prinzmetal's variant angina (PVA) who developed an inferolateral myocardial infarction with right-ventricle involvement was studied using sequential radionuclide imaging until 5 months after the acute event. The patient also underwent-contrast ventriculography and coronary-artery angiography. Equilibrium-gated radionuclide angiography (EGRA) revealed the localization of ventricular dysfunction, the results obtained being in agreement with haemodynamic data. A retrospective review of 47 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis revealed a highly significant (P less than 0.001) association between myositis and myocarditis. Radionuclide imaging of the left ventricular blood pool provides a convenient non-invasive method of monitoring left ventricular function. Left ventricular function is characterised by the left ventricular curve which represents all phases of the cardiac cycle and is obtained by a multiple gated equilibrium method (MUGA). Volume curves were obtained over a minimum 1 1/2 h period in 15 normal subjects and in 20 thyrotoxic patients. Changes in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), maximum ejection fraction rate and total electromechanical time interval were recorded from volume curve data.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive history can be conceptualized as a life-course exposure integrating biological and social factors. Although reproductive factors have been associated with stroke risk and cognitive function, their relationships with structural brain changes remain unclear. Evidence from general population-based studies linking reproductive factors to brain volume, an intermediate marker of cognitive decline, is limited. This study examined whether age at menarche, age at menopause, estrogen exposure duration, and parity are associated with brain volume in postmenopausal women.
